It has been eaten by the Wine Industry and Silicon Valley. Hay fields and farming will soon be over here. Funky, marginal, rural living will soon be out priced (it almost is anyway). I don't know that I will know how to exist in this new world. I don't know if I want to. But I don't know where I'd move. I will need someone with a truck to come and carry me to a nice place in the country where I can live once more in peace and happiness! Anybody got a truck?]]>

I am starting to feel just like the little house in this book. I live in a tiny cute little old cottage with a white picket fence in one of the oldest parts of town. But it is also near the river, where there are warehouses and such, so it's kind of industrial as well. So the developers have taken it upon themselves to turn this into the hip new area of town "The Theatre District" and are building condos and such all around the little place I live. I now have construction in the back and to the left... construction down the block of 44 units... and my landlady is selling off the back half of the property to a developer who will (probably next year) start building another 2 story condo just over my back fence. It's only a matter of time before I'm like that little house... old and cute and charming and surrounded by sky scrapers!!!

This was the first book I read to my daughter. She was still a babe in arms, but I was certain she could grasp the concepts as I read out loud to her and she gazed, platter-eyed, at the pictures. The book was a gift from Nick Forester and his family. She tore one of the pages with her fat baby fist and I taped it back in and kept reading it to her until she was maybe 8 or 9. A long time ago, people used to tell magical stories of wonder and enchantment. Those stories were called Fairy Tales.
Those stories are not in this book. The stories in this book are Fairly Stupid Tales.
I mean, what else would you call a story like "Goldilocks and the Three Elephants"? This girl walking through the woods smells Peanut Porridge Cooking. She decides to break into the Elephants' house, eat the porridge, sit in the chairs, and sleep in the beds. But when she gets in the house she can't climb up on Baby Elephant's chair because it's much too big. And she can't climb on Papa Elephant's chair because it's much much too big. So she goes home. The End.
And if you don't think that's fairly stupid, you should read "Little Red Riding Shorts" or maybe "The Stinky Cheese Man."
In fact, you should definitely go read the stories now, because the rest of this description just kind of goes on and on and doesn't really say anything. I stuck it here so it would fill up the page and make it look like I really knew what I was talking about. So stop now. I mean it. Quit reading this. Open the book. If you read this last sentence, it won't tell you anything.

Back in 1957, Theodor Geisel responded to an article in Life magazine that lamented the use of boring reading primers in schools. Using the pseudonym of "Dr. Seuss" (Seuss was Geisel's middle name) and only two hundred twenty-three words, Geisel created a replacement for those dull primers: "The Cat in the Hat."
