I love how just chill and good the small stuff are. He doesn't write about armies and fighting and murders and so much high climax. It's more like you're just in his world and you love just living in it. It's also pretty refreshing because every book that I've ever read has some sort of dramatic climax but Rothfuss doesn't even need a dramatic climax for it to be a great book. That's so interesting to me. ...more

(view spoiler)[ - Vin and Elend really took a pause this book, ever since Elend went to the Well of Ascension. But they do cover this at the end of the book. It made this book have zero romance though. I feel like the first and second book had some romance between Vin and Elend, and even Sazed and Tindwyl. Would have liked to see more of TenSoon & MeLaan, a kandra romance :P - I cheered Sazed on this whole series. He has been my favourite and underated character this whole time and I'm so happy that he basically became god, he deserved it. Like I said in my previous review, I thought Sazed was going to take the power at the Well of Ascension, and if he did then he would have only had to kill Ruin to gain his power. But it was a neat ending with Vin saying that Ruin made one big mistake, killing Elend because that was the only reason she had lived for, so she was prepared to die now. Maybe if Sazed took that power instead he wouldn't have died and maybe he'd be able to still become god. - I kinda wanted more of an ending for Marsh, but I did like that when Elend was fighting him he thought back to the moment when Kelsier was fighting the Lord Ruler, and Marsh could become a Lord Ruler because he had Allomancy and Feruchemy. I just don't really know what happened to Marsh. - I'm still kinda confused at the mix of Duralumin and Atium gives... knowledge? from what Elend saw - Not really sure what happened to the 1st and 2nd and 5th generation Kandra? - I was hoping to get more background on Vin's mother and father, and see if it maybe would be of importance. - i liked the realization of how Vin's earring came about and why (hide spoiler)]...more

I like how we understand more about the Kandra and the koloss! I found SazedWooooooooow what a great world build :) I was encapsulated in this world.
I like how we understand more about the Kandra and the koloss! I found Sazed character became very interesting! It was interesting to see Elend start becoming more like an actual King and not just naive and buddy buddy with his friends.
The biggest thing in this book was that it was so interesting to see the true selves come out of all the characters! Everyone really came into being this book and I feel like I know their strengths and weaknesses so much better.
Honestly I did feel like it dragged on in the middle, where the crew was thinking of what to do about the invading armies, wish it was cut down in half at least for that part. But other than that I really enjoyed it! Aaaaaand I guess I also want to say that I love the dynamic with Vin and Zane and wish it got deeper into that! Would have been interesting :P But I guess Sanderson didn't want to sway Vin's character too much.
(view spoiler)[ - I totally thought that Sazed was going to end up in the Well of Ascension just like how the Feruchemist in the past became the Lord Ruler. - It'll be interesting in the next book to dive into what the hell did Vin release out of the well. I'm FREEEEEEEEEE. Was it a good thing or a bad thing? Well the mists are still around so I guess it wasn't a great thing. - I did not guess that the Kandra spy was "TenSoon" was ate Ore-seur. - I liked the twist at the end how Vin found out how to control not only Kandra but Koloss as well. I just added all the remaining books to my 2020 to-reads list XD 12 books geez long series but the books are relatively short in comparison to other books I've read.
I just couldn't stop reading, the book really took me into a great escape.
This book is very "who-dunnit" themed which there's a murder mystery that Mercy is trying to solve but she can't publicly get too involved because there a lot of secrets.
I feel like the first book was mostly intro to werewolves, second book was more so about vampires, and this book was about the fae. Which is a great series layout because it changes things up and adds new elements. Makes it easier to outwit the reader too ;) More unpredictable.
I love Mercy <3 She's a badass, witty, sassy yet authentic, and loyal. I love how shit happens but Mercy is almost like the comic relief by making sly smartass remarks. Her love confusion between Samuel and Adam is great and nicely written.
I got to fall more in love with Samuel, Adam, Ben, Darryl, Honey, Jesse, wait I'm naming all the characters haha!
(view spoiler)[ - I feel curious as to if Mercy is alone, being a shapeshifter or not. Maybe the next book will be all about Shapeshifters??? hello :) - It was cool seeing Zee's true form, he's kinda hot :P - I loved the whole part with Mercy talking to Tim and Sam getting jealous lol and then about her contemplating going to his house because he has a list of items that might have been stolen and scared to frighten Adam off with the whole situation. - I was a bit disappointed in how Tim died, I felt it needed to be more ... savory, instead of quick. I thought one of his new fancy magical tools would make him last longer lol - I like how the character of Mercy changed so much on the influence of magic but she was powerful enough to overcome to kill Tim. - The introduction to the Grey Lord is interesting about the fae. So much annoying politics with fae (hide spoiler)] ...more

Just because I LOVED the first book and this book was just good... If this book alone was a stand alone I probably would have rated it a 4/5 star.
I mean it was good, but I couldn't help continually checking how much was left to read lmao.
About half the book is Kell/Rye and the other half was about Lila/Allucard.
The book felt like Triwizard Tournament meats Gladiator.
V.E. Schwab's writing is sooooo well written though I love her meticulous detailed description of everything including setting and characters.
I feel like I wanted more plot/story/development on the other city's people in the tournament. I don't even remember their names. How their culture is, how different they are, where they came from. This was lacking and I wanted more. Seemed like they were just little pons in the story, kinda inhuman. ...more

This book takes place before the Graceling book. I just love this Graceling realm. Kristin Cashore you've done it again with Fire, I loved reading it.
This book takes place before the Graceling book. It's about Fire and not Katsa. The story slightly ties into the Graceling book by the introduction of a character. But it doesn't really tie into the story of Graceling. I kinda wish it did tie in more. (view spoiler)[ You'll meet the young version of Bitterblue's father King Leck, which was kinda neat. This series is so under rated. Maybe because it's a bit old, Fire was published in 2009.
It's the way KC writes and the world and the characters - I could just read forever. I think if you're not use to long, slow paced books then you might not enjoy this book. If you're not liking it from the start then don't continue reading it because you won't be able to appreciate the book.
It's such a great fantasy novel. It vibes similar to adult fantasy like Patrick Rothfuss and Tad Williams but it's more teen friendly. Great gateway fantasy novel for teens.

This one was better than the first book! I was 50/50 on if I should continue this series because I only semi enjoyed the first one. But I'm pleased I continued on. It's still not the greatest series by no means.
I love the culture of werewolves, vampires, shape-shifters, walkers, witches, demons, and wizards lol I also enjoyed learning more about the vampires this book. It's kinda like how True Blood but a lot less sexualness which sucks :P This series needs more of that!
My main complaint about this book is the pace, the beginning - good, the middle - SOOO SLOW, the end - too quick... Also I expected more for the ending.

The hype yes yes, the hype made me disappointed me the first half of the book. Midway through I was thinking of giving this book a strong 3/5 stars. It was good, very nice poetic writing with all its magical fairytale medievalness glory. But the second half and especially the last quarter was actually really really good!
It's not often that I'm wrong about an ending and this was one of those moments!
I'm glad this book is nominated for the Goodreads 2019 Choice Awards ;)
Can't wait to read the next one.
(view spoiler)[ I thought it was so nice that Cardan asked Jude to be his queen... I've been guiltily crushing on Cardan throughout this series (and so has Jude lol) and I've been waiting for the moment when they made it official (and she really was too)... so I wanted this to be true so bad I was blind sided just like Jude was lol genius...
I didn't really like the fact that Cardan didn't even seem to flinch when he heard that Balekin was dead, I would have thought some type of emotion would have been expressed.
I enjoyed the whole underwater torture section. Brought to light the other "world" and introduced new characters.
I find Madoc, Taryn and Locke boring.
I was hoping Oak was going to have a much bigger part in the book but i guess because he's so young, maybe in the next book when Jude tries to come back to Elfane (hide spoiler)]...more

It was pretty Game of Throne(3.5/5 stars) This book always kept me on my toes, it was suspenseful and I was always wondering where it was going next. It was pretty Game of Thrones like with all the politics, war, and gruesomeness. I would describe it as a fairytale/castle/court/political power plot.
Holly Black writes each sentence so dense with description and meaning! It's definitely not a book to listen to in the car lol you have to pay a lot of attention to it.
There's a good amount of description mixed with dialogue.
This isn't a book for YYA (younger younger adult) lol More so like late teens at least.
Holly Black is a good world builder, this book would make a good movie.
Cardon is such a mean bully yet I was attracted to him from the start for some reason lol He's just so hot and powerful XD shame Leah... shame... shame....
And oh man the vocabulary!!! Sheesh I'm having to google a word every few minutes... New words to learn from reading this book: obeisance, capricious, effusive, machination, magnanimous, solemn, abdicate, euphemism, fealty, conciliatory, opulent, pretension, and many more......more

There were some great moments.
I just feel like this book was a bit poorly written, felt off pace, felt like it was really 2two people trying to make a story that didn't really jive together.
The characters kinda run off into the south and meet a bunch of dark skinned folk and then they loop them into the war that I'm assuming is going to take part in the 3rd and final book. Story felt kinda plain and simple.
I love the characters though :) Shana, Mero, Keman, Sheyrena, and Lorryn. I like the intro into Dora too.

The first quarter of the book had a really good recap of the previous book as well as the series and tied it into this book well.
What I love most about this book and series is the philosophical out of the box thinking the character's have. Also about moral and doing what is right.
“...back when people lived on only one world, all the nations and races and religions and philosophies crushed together elbow to elbow, with nowhere to go but into each others land’s, for the sky was a ceiling then, and space was a cast chasm that could not be bridged.”

Ender fading and turning to dust was kinda weird and way too soft a way for him to pass away. This is the best science fiction novel I have ever read. Very unexpected too as it's the 3rd book in a series and the only 3.8/5 avg. Goodreads ratingThis is the best science fiction novel I have ever read. Very unexpected too as it's the 3rd book in a series and the only 3.8/5 avg. Goodreads rating. Verryyyyyyyyy original! Verrrrrryyyyyy creative, philosophical, and debatable. This book really makes you think about things, ideas, humanity, right/wrong, religion, faith, love, connection...
My Quick Synopsis: It's difficult explaining the story without giving a lot away because this book constantly mophs and changes and evolves but I will begin with questions from the beginning: There are a new set of characters from the God Path and they are Chinese descendants that are very intelligent but rely heavily on the gods, and what the gods lead them to do. But what if they're not listening to the gods, what is affecting how they are so strange from humans and that they need rituals to purify themselves to make them clean again? How was Jane made, where did she come from, how can they save her? How is Jane connected to everything, is she like a god? More in depth look at the piggies and how they make sense now. Who is the hive queen and how is she connected to everything? What is the descolada virus and what does it do to sentitent beings on Luisitana? How do they prevent another xenocide? How do they stop the Descolada virus? Where did it come from?
I feel like normally even the best of books has it's faults, however small they are but this book is an exception, I'm almost sure it actually has no faults. I can usually be quick to complain about multiple parts of stories, characters, things that don't line up, plot holes, etc. but I am speechless with Xenocide, it's just about perfect! lol It's very rare I find a book like this. I feel like by this third book Orson Scott Card has improved his writing ten fold and that's even with the first couple books being pretty great.
I admit this book is very philosophical and "talky" as Orson Scott Card says. Some may not like that but I loved it. This book isn't about "what happened", it's more about "what was discussed and decided upon." Orson Scott Card was going to write a whole book about philotes but instead he combined the ideas into the Ender series and made this Xenocide book like a whole series in itself.
Parts I enjoyed: ""Don't be embarrassed, Qing-jao. The wise are wise because they make no mistakes. They are wise because they correct their mistakes as soon as they recognize them."
(Piggy speaking with Hive Queen)
......
......
Miro talking to his mother Novinha: "But you don't love him. You don't know how to love people. You only know how to own them. And because people will never act just like you want them to, Mother, you'll always feel betrayed. And because eventually everybody dies you'll always feel cheated. But you're the cheat, Mother. You're the one who uses our love for you to try to control us."
Miro speaking with Valentine: "Are you a believer? Let's say I'm a suspecter. I suspect there may be someone who cares what happens to us. That's one step better than merely wishing. And one step below hoping."
Valentine thinking about Miro and Ouanda: "Inner strength and outward respect. These are the people who hold a community together, who lead. Unlike the sheep and the wolves, they perform a better role than the script given them by their inner fears and desires. They act out the script of decency, of self-sacrifice, of public horror-of civilization. And in he pretense, it becomes reality. There really is civilization in human history, thought Valentine, but only because of people like these. The shepherds.
Miro lashing out and Ender explaining to him: "I think that we are free, and I don't think it's just an illusion that we believe in because it has survival value. And I think we're free because we aren't just this body, acting out a genetic script. And we aren't some soul that God created out of nothing. We're free because we always ex isted. Right back from the beginning of time, only there was no beginning of time so we existed all along. Nothing ever caused us. Nothing ever made us. We simply are, and we always were. Philotes? asked Miro Maybe, said Ender"
Ender explaining Gods to Wang-Mu: "No matter how smart or strong you are, there's always somebody smarter or stronger, and when you run into somebody stronger and smarter than and you think, This is a god. This is perfection. But I can promise you that there's somebody else somewhere else who'll make your god look like a maggot by comparison. And somebody smarter or stronger or better is some way. So let me tell you what I think about gods. I think a real god is not going to be so scared or angry that he tries to keep other people down. For Congress to genetically alter people to make them smarter and more creative, that would have been a godlike, generous gift. But they were scared, so they hobbled the people of Path. They wanted to stay in control. A real god doesn't care about control. A real god already has control of everything that needs controlling. Real gods would want to teach you how to be just like them.
Ender talking with Jane: "You can't have it both ways, said Wiggin. Either somebody had a purpose for you or you were an accident. That's what an accident is-somethig that happened without anyone purposing it. So are you going to be resentful either way? The people of the Path are going to resent Congress like crazy, once they all find out what's been done to them. Are you going to be resentful because nobody did anything to you? I can if I want, said Jane, bit it was a mockery of childish spite. I'll tell you what I think, said Wiggin. I think you don't grow up until you stop worrying about other people's purposes or lack of them and find the purposes you believe in for yourself."
Hive Queen speaking to the piggy "Earthborn animals do this thing inside their brains-a sort of mad firing-off of synapses, controlled insanity. While they're asleep. The part of their brain that records sight or sound, it's firing off every hour or two while they sleep; even when all the sights and sounds are complete random nonsense, their brains just keep on trying to assemble it into something sensible. They try to make stories out of it, it's complete random nonsense with no possible correlation to the real world, and yet they turn it into these crazy stories. And then they forget them. All that work, coming up with these stories, and when they wake up they forget almost all of them. But when they do remember, then they try to make stories of those crazy stories, trying to fit them into their real lives.

You can tell that Orson Scott Card (through The Speaker) really knows and understands people, and what it means to be human.
There were just some parts in the book that was really boring... and just dragged on. But then it would pick right back up again and be interesting again.
I enjoyed this book even better than Ender's Game actually. Speaker of the Dead takes place thousands of years after Ender's Game.
Anthropology on the study of piggies was interesting as they're so different than humans yet similar in some ways too. The fear that goes on between races is realistic.
I really liked Jane and wished there was more of her but maybe in the other books.
Speaker for the Dead was originally suppose to be the standalone book Orson Scott Card wrote. And it was the first book in the series that he wrote. The beginning of the book had a interesting introduction where Card spoke about writing the series.
