Tutto ha inizio da un patto narrativo: grazie alla magia di Merlino, nel 1429 Enrico VI è stato proclamato imperatore di Inghilterra e Francia. Questo determina a cascata una serie di cambiamenti radicali nella storia che siamo abituati a conoscere del nostro continente.
Questo historical fantasy è un multipov e segue le vicende di diversi personaggi, lasciando però emergere due protagoniste: l'erede al trono Marie Victoria e la strega Aelwyn. Dentro al romanzo trovate tutto quel viene promesso in quarta di copertina: tanta magia, potere e intrighi. Ci sono però secondo me, alcune note dolenti che è impossibile non notare.
PRO: la scrittura è buona così come l'ambientazione, funzionale anche se non dettagliatissima. Anche l'espediente narrativo è originale e mi piace molto il concetto della magia legata alla pietre anche se avrei gradito un po' di approfondimento in più in tal senso. CONTRO: tanti pov, troppi considerato l'esiguo numero di pagine. In più punti del romanzo si ha proprio il senso di essere "circondati" dagli avvenimenti e di non cogliere pienamente il senso di certe azioni compiute, con il risultato di non riuscire a empatizzare con nessuno dei personaggi. Tuttavia, il più grande aspetto negativo è il finale. Confusionario, frettoloso, forzato: ho avuto l'impressione che si sia voluti andare al risparmio della carta perché non si spiega come mai ad un certo punto la trama prenda una tale accelerazione (va benissimo un ritmo concitato, ma spiegazioni frettolose in bocca ai protagonisti, in questi "dialoghi-spiegozzo" davvero cringe anche meno!).
Nel complesso, lo consiglio a chi è amante del genere e cerca una lettura leggera e carina da portarsi in vacanza. Sicuramente non siamo di fronte a un romanzo che sposta gli equilibri delle letture dell'anno, ma si lascia leggere....more

Per tutto il romanzo, narrato in prima persona, seguiamo le vicende di Mina. Dopo un grande atto di coraggio, la ragazza viene trascinata nel Mondo degli Spiriti dove cerca in tutti i modi di spezzare una maledizione imposta al Dio del Mare che causa danni e guerre nel mondo degli umani, diventando la sua sposa. Una storia, una favola anzi, che prende le mosse dal folklore coreano ma riecheggia anime di grande successo come "La città incantata" (personalmente, anche troppo: mi sono piaciuti i primi rimandi, ma a un certo punto questo costante occhiolino a Miyazaki ha finito per stancarmi).
Pro: narrazione lineare, trama carina, un forte legame alle tradizione e all'amore per la famiglia. Contro: sistema magico confuso e a tratti disordinato, poca energia nello stile narrativo, scarsa immedesimazione nei personaggi principali e nelle loro emozioni.
Senza dilungarmi oltre, lo consiglio a chi è amante del genere ma sappiate che non è un romanzo che sposterà gli equilibri delle vostre letture dell'anno (a meno che non siate molto sfortunati...more

Forse lo stile è un pochino piatto, ma è funzionale all’andamento della narrazione. Persino i personaggi ne escono bene. Sì, forse non sono tridimensionali al 100% ma non stridono più di tanto nel contesto. Temevo stereotipi e per fortuna non ce ne sono stati.

Sicuramente Piranesi è una lettura agile, anche se non ingrana sin da subito. Inoltre, devo ammettere che la lettura del libro procede più per la curiosità dello svolgimento che per una realtà affettività alla storia. Infatti non mi sono legata o anche solo emozionata per nessun personaggio all'interno del libro ma tutto è stato molto elegante, limpido e scultoreo come la classicità degli interni della Casa che la Clarke descrive nel romanzo. Purtroppo insomma, niente "barocco" che piace tanto a me.
Ma quindi lo consiglierei? Beh direi di sì e per diversi motivi. 1) Essendo uno dei libri più gettonati del 2020 e del 2021, bisogna leggerlo per farsene un'idea e sono così poche pagine che la lettura, anche nel caso vi tediasse, non sarà mai lunghissima. 2) E' un romanzo così strano che secondo me sarà un esempio per gli anni a venire. 3) Penso che possa davvero piacere a tutti, a prescindere dal genere. Ti lascia la sensazione di quei film contorti ma belli dei quali alla fine non capisci il finale, ma ripensandoci dici "ok, ci sta". ...more

Ho aspettato diversi mesi prima di comprare questo libro, volevo prima leggere qualche recensione a riguardo. Alla fine, notando che il parere generale tendeva al positivo, mi sono detta a comprarlo pensando che poteva fare al caso mio. Purtroppo mi sbagliavo.
"Le diecimila porte di January" non è un libro brutto. E' comunque scritto abbastanza bene, ha una trama diversa dal solito e sa intrattenere, ma ci sono a mio avviso tanti piccoli difetti che mi hanno impedito di affezionarmi alla storia e dunque di apprezzarla al meglio.
La narrazione procede attraverso lunghi (lunghissimi) capitoli narrati quasi esclusivamente in prima persona singolare, con uno stile molto informale che poco si addice alla trama e al contesto storico nel quale si inserisce la storia. L'ambientazione è interessante, ma davvero troppo abbozzata. Il wordbuilding di tutti i mondi incontrati è scarso, impalpabile e scolorito: quanto potenziale sprecato! Stessa cosa per le citazioni letterarie prese in prestito che costellano soprattutto la prima parte del romanzo. A partire dal nome stesso della protagonista - che non a caso richiama il dio romano Giano - il libro si intesse di rimandi storici e letterari... senza però riuscire a sbrogliare la matassa! Avrei preferito meno richiami, ma intessuti meglio nella storia. Persino i personaggi sono insipidi, nonostante abbia apprezzato molto la scelta di creare una protagonista di colore, che sfugge quelli che ormai sono i canoni estetici prestabiliti, e anche un po' noiosi (devo ammettere che è stato questo a non farmi dare solo due stelle al romanzo).
Personalmente non è un romanzo che consiglierei. Come ho detto sopra, non è un brutto libro ma il tempo che abbiamo in questa vita è poco e bisogna scegliere bene quali libri vale la pena leggere e questo, a mio avviso, non è uno di quelli. Carina l'edizione, ma vado avanti....more

No, no e ancora no! Perché un libro con un potenziale di trama pazzesco deve essere rovinato in tale modo? Che peccato... Ho iniziato "Ragazzi della tempesta" alimentata dai migliori propositi che sembravano essere confermati dai primi capitoli. Una prosa passabile - anche se la prima persona al presente non la digerisco molto - un sistema magico coerente e "verosimile" e personaggi per nulla male. E poi... Poi succede che la narrazione si fa concitata, ma la scrittrice non sa più tenere il ritmo. Succede che il sistema magico delle stagioni, prima presentato come inviolabile, inizia a fare cilecca in maniera incoerente e confusionaria. Senza contare che la base operativa di Cronos non regge il peso che gli è stato affidato nelle prime pagine (come può una base protomilitare di massima sicurezza essere arginata con tanta sicurezza da una manciata di adolescenti?). E succede anche che la narrazione perde il controllo della stessa timeline dei personaggi tanto da non riuscire nemmeno a capire dove, quando e perché molte cose avvengono (e meno male che non sono stata da sola a leggere il libro, perché anche la mia amica ha detto la stessa cosa!). La faccio breve: coerenza questa sconosciuta.
Insomma io ho iniziato questo libro consapevole del fatto che sarebbe stato un guilty pleasure senza pensieri e senza pretese... ma un minimo! Due punti e mezzo restano però per l'idea di base, davvero geniale e fuori dal comune....more

Il viaggio di HaQuesto è un libro che molti lettori, ne sono certa, avrebbero voluto leggere o farsi leggere da piccoli. Per me lo è stato di sicuro. Il viaggio di Halla non è solo fantasy, è un cammino. Per tutte le pagine veniamo condotti attraverso la crescita fisica e spirituale della protagonista, una bambina che viene al mondo con il piede sbagliato: non è voluta, è indesiderata, è di troppo. In seguito, si ritroverà a vivere diverse esperienze: prima allevata da orsi, poi draghi, sino ad inoltrarsi davvero all’interno della vita umana con tutte le sue contraddizioni. Il romanzo è ricco di riferimenti alla cultura nordica e alla religione cattolica, mescolati assieme a creature fantasy: un cocktail di elementi che, lo ammetto, raramente vedo convivere così bene assieme. Anche da grandi penso sia un viaggio che vale la pena affrontare. E, chissà, forse in futuro sarete voi a leggerla ai vostri figli. ...more

Midnight Sun è quel genere di romanzo del quale non ci si rende conto di aver bisogno finché non si è finito di leggere il primo capitolo. Il mio passato - e forse anche presente - da fan di Twilight non è un segreto: chiunque mi conosca o mi segua da un pochino su Instagram lo avrà scoperto da tempo. Tuttavia penso di essere capace di avere un giudizio obiettivo anche di fronte a titoli che, come questo, parlano espressamente ad una parte felice del mio passato che non rinnegherò mai.
Midnight Sun, fidatevi, è il “guilty pleasure” da leggere dopo una giornata faticosa, in mezzo alle coperte e con la mente pronta a rilassarsi. La storia la conosciamo tutti, anche fin troppo bene: inutile dunque dilungarsi sulla trama, Midnight Sun non aggiunge assolutamente nulla alla narrazione. Quindi vi avverto: non aspettatevi di comprare questo libro per scoprire altro sull’universo di Twilight. Dunque, che cosa mi ha permesso di dare 5 stelle? Un insieme di cose, che adesso proverò a spiegare. Innanzitutto, credo di non aver mai letto in vita mia un libro che, con questa potenza, mi facesse tornare indietro nel tempo. Mentre leggevo ero tornata la tredicenne - un pochino fanatica - che aveva plasmato la sua vita su Edward e Bella. Quello è stato, senza alcun dubbio, uno dei periodi più spensierati e incantati della mia vita: ricordarmi di essere stata anche così mi ha fatto molto bene. In secondo luogo, ho apprezzato molto la scrittura della Meyer. Trovo che in questi anni la sua prosa sia cresciuta insieme ai lettori, e questo va lodato. E' sempre stata capace di incollarmi alle pagine: dopo aver letto solo due righe, vengo trascinata a Forks e nella mente dei suoi protagonisti dimentica di quanto mi circonda e del chiasso del presente. Infine una parte chissà quale e quanto importante di me sin dai tempi di Twilight ha avuto una certa curiosità "voyeuristica" nel conoscere cosa provava Edward nelle scene cult di tutta la saga. Sotto questo punto di vista, il libro regala tantissimo: finalmente possiamo conoscere Edward al di là del “filtro Bella Swan”, capire cosa spesso ha spinto le sue azione o le sue affermazioni. Ho apprezzato molto anche gli excursus che a momenti alterni coinvolgeva il passato dei membri della famiglia Cullen. Tornando invece all’ universo di Edward, moltissimi lettori hanno tacciato il romanzo di essere ripetitivo e prolisso. Io non penso affatto che sia così, spiego: Edward è un ragazzo nato nel 1901 che vive una non-vita che non ha potuto scegliersi, oltre ad essere propenso all’overthinking e ai ripensamenti… leggere un romanzo di poche pagine, senza continue riflessioni non sarebbe stato il romanzo di Edward Cullen. Edward è IL pensatore, il rimurginatore per eccellenza che si tormenta e si crogiola nel dolore con atteggiamento masochistico: 780 pagine sono anche troppo poche! Quindi, se siete fan della saga, se avete avuto una cotta per Edward Cullen e avete voglia di ritornare nelle fredde ambientazioni di Forks, Midnight Sun fa al caso volto: per me è stata una lettura coinvolgente, un vero balsamo. Insomma, potrebbe essere il libro perfetto per chi ha voglia di mettere in pausa letture importanti e rilassarsi con un titolo che ci farà tornare tutti adolescenti per un po'.

Devo confessare che prima di "Le Belve" non avevo mai provato a leggere romanzi horror in vita mia. I motivi, come si può ben immaginare, erano molteplici. In primo luogo la paura di non riuscire a dormire dopo sole poche pagine di lettura e quindi l'ansia di non terminare il libro appena comprato ma forse l'ostacolo più forte per me era la sensazione che questo genere non avrebbe restituito lo stesso fascino descrittivo dei migliori film horror. Tuttavia quando mi è stato proposto di leggere questo romanzo mi sono detta che forse era il caso di fare un tentativo. Infatti "Le Belve" mi ha mostrato con classe che mi stavo sbagliando, e di grosso.
Prima di tutto 30 e lode alla scrittura: oltre al fatto che le due penne si mescolano tra loro in un mix fantastico e letale, entrambi gli autori sono dotati di una scrittura pregnante, tagliente e suggestiva che ho trovato perfetta per il genere. L'ambientazione del romanzo è un'altra perla ben studiata, capace di veicolare perfettamente il pathos e l'ansia che deve sorgere nel lettore quando legge "Le Belve". Per quanto riguarda i personaggi, non ho veramente empatizzato con nessuno... ma forse non è questo il vero obbiettivo di un romanzo horror. Fatto sta che siccome è qualcosa che in genere mi aspetto dai romanzi, per me è stata una nota negativa che non mi ha fatto dare le 5 stelle piene. Quello che è vero è che mi sentivo parte della scolaresca che si perde all'interno del vecchio ospedale alle prese con l'occulto e l'esoterico: una sera mentre leggevo da sola in casa ho dovuto smettere per la paura!

Ho letto Bunny in pochissimo tempo - tenendo conto della sessione estiva - e sinceramente è una delle letture più intriganti che ho fatto dall'inizio dell'anno a questa parte. Premetto che il titolo mi aveva attratta molto, come anche le premesse del romanzo e l'hype generale che avevo visto sui social ha fatto il resto. Devo dire che sono rimasta davvero soddisfatta, soprattutto perché in genere non sono una fan del genere weird e temevo di non appassionarmi alla storia. I primi capitoli sono davvero intriganti, confusionari ma affascinanti al tempo stesso, ricchi di colpi di scena che ti fanno divorare pagine su pagine. Verso metà, il romanzo rallenta il suo ritmo concitato, tanto che è proprio questo ciò che mi impedisce di dare le cinque stelle: in alcuni punti ho pensato che la Awad non sapesse bene riempiere buchi narrativi, colmandoli con eccessiva stravaganza. Resta il fatto che la protagonista, Samantha, è il classico genere di personaggio che io non sopporto, ma nonostante questo la sua personalità non è stato un peso. Inoltre l'abilità con cui la scrittrice descrive il gruppo delle Bunny e delle dinamiche femminili all'università mi ha colpita davvero molto. Tuttavia, i colpi di scena finali sono tanto inaspettati da riuscire a risollevare tutto, lasciando comunque un grande senso di estraniamento: ho riflettuto 2 giorni, prima di scrivere questa piccola recensione! Nel complesso, dico che è un titolo che non dovete farvi scappare... io e la mia coniglietto lo abbiamo letto tutto d'un fiato!

Rappresentava molte cose per me: un ritorno alla mia adolescenza, un'occasione per rigettarmi in una saga ormai comfort zone, la possibilità di approfondire la conoscenza di un personaggio che mi ha sempre affascinata ma che è rimasto lontano, irraggiungibile.
Peccato che Hunger Games. Ballata dell'usignolo e del serpente mi abbia deluso. La colpa, potreste dire, è mia: con l'attesa ho alzato troppo le aspettative. Ma non è così e lo so perché la prima e la seconda parte di questo volume sono bellissime. Ciò che mi ha fatto storcere il naso e calare di una stella la votazione è la terza parte. Il libro racconta le vicende di uno Snow diciottenne che - povero in canna ed orfano - cerca di brillare agli occhi di Capitol City grazie all'incarico di mentore che è stato affidato a lui e ad altri 23 studenti. E' grazie a questo che conosce Lucy Gray - tributo femmina del Distretto 12 a lui assegnata - e subito l'attenzione che nutre nei suoi confronti si trasforma in qualcosa di più, come annunciato anche dalla sinossi del romanzo. La parte del libro che si dedica a Capitol City per me è stata bellissima. Finalmente comprendiamo meglio cosa pensano gli abitanti di Capitol e li vediamo per la prima volta come persone, non come manichini che indossano buffi capi d'abbigliamento! Anche la descrizione di questi Hunger Games primordiali è stata molto interessante, e la lettura scorreva velocissima. Poi è arrivata la terza parte, e l'incantesimo si è spezzato. Vi giuro che in certi momenti ho dubitato di star leggendo Hunger Games da quanto mi annoiavo! Capitoli vuoti, senza senso, privi di pathos e di un reale interesse che leggi solo per arrivare alla fine il prima possibile. Uno svolgimento degli eventi rapido sì, ma per questo insulso e privo di significato: capisco che c'era bisogno di far tornare Snow il cattivo che tutti conosciamo, ma questo passaggio frettoloso da ragazzo che singhiozza sul letto per la sorte dell'amico a evil villain della trilogia io proprio non l'ho digerito. Come mi è andato di traverso anche il trattamento riservato all'altra protagonista del romanzo - Lucy Gray - della quale non sappiamo letteralmente nulla. Sappiamo che canta, che gioca con i serpenti e che è una Covey. Del resto niente: non un suo pensiero, non un suo stato d'animo... persino del suo passato non scopriamo nulla! Ho persino pensato che la volontà della Collins fosse quella di non svelare il suo personaggio in funzione della fine del romanzo, per renderla una figura evanescente. Poi però mi sono detta che comunque questa scusa non regge: se crei una coprotagonista, deve essere tale. Insomma, come avrete capito mi aspettavo di più... Ve lo consiglio? I fan accaniti possono provare a leggerlo per farsi un'idea, altrimenti lasciate perdere....more

A spingermi alla lettura è stato soprattutto lo svolgersi concitato della narrazione, così come anche la volontà di capire ciò che stava succedendo ai vari personaggi. Dalle prime pagine, concentrate sul rapimento di Charlie e le rivelazioni fatte a Cress vi è un sommarsi di nomi ed eventi che si susseguono capitolo per capitolo sino alla fine, degna davvero di essere quella di una saga fantasy. Il mio personaggio preferito è Sakura, giovane donna figlia di un proprietario di alberghi giapponese e di una donna americana, che vive tra le colpe del suo passato e la volontà di chiarezza del suo presente. La sua storia è quella che mi ha colpito di più, non fosse altro per la passione che nutro verso il mondo nipponico in generale. Il personaggio invece che mi è piaciuto di meno è stato Cress, proprio non sono riuscita a sentirlo "mio". Nel complesso la lettura è abbastanza scorrevole, l'autore dimostra una forte capacità retorica e stilistica che non possono che essere un pregio encomiabile. Le tre stelle sono dovute al fatto che la lettura richiede molta concentrazione anche per essere un Urban fantasy, e che forse i troppi elementi messi "in pentola" possono creare confusione. Consiglio l'acquisto per chi ama il genere e ha voglia di leggere un romanzo che procede per quadri, come molti protagonisti al suo interno. ...more
