I appreciated how the author went through the dialogues, giving his thoughts on which ones were likely not written by Plato. Also, the history of Plato with Syracuse was helpful for the context of many of Plato's letters and writings....more

This book was really a rant about his family and legalistic Christian upbringing; basically a Christianized version of Hillbilly Elegy, but Hillbilly Elegy did it better (with more language of course.) Leaves you feeling uneasy because there’s little hope ever mentioned by the author (who is known for writing on grace!) If Yancey is going to go on for hours about how he was mistreated (and I agree he had a rough childhood), it would have been nice to have the gospel described and applied at the end of the book. We hear about requests for forgiveness, the word “grace” mentioned a lot, but not much of either applied to those who hurt Philip and his brother....more

Douglas MacArthur was an American hero worthy of honor, especially for his military feats in the Pacific theater (a lesser known theater than the WWII European theater.) MacArthur had many weaknesses which are often overlooked, but Manchester shows the reader both the positive and negative attributes of the man. At times, one does wonder why he quotes some course language from GI's and politicians, especially mixed with messianic language of those who truly worshiped MacArthur and saw him as their worldly Messiah. Christians will not appreciate that occasional annoyance. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys WWII history, American military biographies, or history in general....more

McCullough makes you feel like you're with Truman through his youngest years until his death. What a journey! Though he was an average man without a college education, he was self-taught and often showed wisdom above others who were more learned. This work does not gloss over Truman's mistakes and deficiencies, but deals with them fairly. To be sure it is a tome, but listening to it in Audible makes it easier to progress at a good pace. ...more
