He is torn between a perfectionism and dignity that he has fashioned from an early age through hard work, and long restrained passions and impulses which he would like to give free rein to.
The Venitian setting is wonderfully depicted and the characterization is almost brought to perfection, but the simple lack of substantial action taking place leaves me with a feeling of incompleteness. This novella seems to be more concerned with aesthetics and in this respect it is an excellent one. Nonetheless, it is not easily accessible for its numerous philosophical or mythological references. It remains fairly enjoyable though....more
