These are, simple, no-nonsense rules that make more sense than any cookbook, nutrition guide or diet book. Simple words and phrases, things we know but don't pay enough attention to follow, so simple a elementary school child would understand it and probably apply it a lot better than most adults.
Many people eschew this type of book as hype and an 'ignorance is bliss' choice. The thing is, when you learn what this book as to teach, you realize that it is well rounded, it doesn't beat you over the head with elitist ideals. It's a recipe for living and eating at its best. It is told in first person format about how Tom Neale went to live on an uninhabited island in the Suvorov Atoll. He felt that his whole life was leading to that purpose and then he was finally able to do it in his 50's, in the 1950's. This island was not on a trade route but was an outpost at one point during WWII where a lookout was kept. After the war, all that was really left was a shack and a couple rustic outbuildings. This was Tom Neale's home. The book talks about the preparation, the experiences on the island and all the trials and successes that went along with it. The book made me wish I could have met the man who had such perfect insight into what he should do with his life. Make no mistake, this was not some crazy hermit. He was a New Zealand Navy man who after his time in the military worked in the Pacific Islands. He practiced 'batch' living which essentially meant he depended on no one for what he needed. He knew how to do just about everything and was able to apply that to island living. Reading about his daily life, everything from fishing, to creating a garden to surviving 5 hours in the ocean when his small boat capsized drew me in. It will be one of the books that has a permanent place on my nightstand....more
If you don't get out there and start looking for ways to do the local thing after reading this book...I don't know what to say to you.
Barbara KingsolvIf you don't get out there and start looking for ways to do the local thing after reading this book...I don't know what to say to you.
Barbara Kingsolver gives an account of a year in the life of eating locally. Now, she does have a farm, a green thumb and the knowledge of how to raise chickens and turkeys. Not many people have that BUT she does explain how they did it and why they did it in such a way that it makes it seem possible for many of us to do in whole or in part.
Her husband and daughter also contribute to the book in forms of essays on everything from how they explain their locavore attitude to interesting statistics or what not buying locally costs us.
This book could get dull by preaching to you but it doesn't. Kingsolver is not a preachy person. She is however a wonderful writer who makes you believe in the whole process. It was and is truely life changing for me....more
