Britney Spears has been famous my entire life. When her conservator ship started I was only 8 years old and I was pretty much clueless about the whole situation up until a few years ago. Reading about her life leading up to the conservatorship and the unimaginable infantilization and disempowerment that followed after made my skin crawl. Although I know Britney worked with ghostwriter Sam Lansky I think her voice still shone through within these pages. You can feel the desperation to be believed, to be taken seriously as an adult woman, to be free.
I always knew her parents were evil bastard freaks but some of the events she describes actually made my chest hurt with anger, anxiety and fear. Mr. Spears looking into his daughters eyes and telling her "I'm Britney Spears now" is such a wicked thing to say I had to put the book down and just sit with that for a little while. Fuck him and his wife. And fuck Jamie Lynn too. She is going to have the life she deserves.
While Britney's story is definitely an outlier I think it mirrors the experience of many women today. Justified emotional reactions are either dismissed or vilified as a classic case of "female hysteria". Men can just wake up one day and decide to start a hate train and people will jump on without second thought. Children and young women are sexualized against their will first but once they start owning their sexuality they are shamed for it. Nothing we do is ever right.
Right before this I read a book called "The mad women's ball" the story of which follows a few women in the mid 1880s who have been incarcerated in a mental hospital for various ridiculous reasons including depression, prostitution and adultery. Almost all of them got taken to the hospital by male family members, while female family members idly watched. Reading about these women and looking up the true stories that inspired the book made me go "wow i'm glad this isn't happening anymore."
...And yet society lets cases like Britney's happen. I can't fathom the abuse she had endured not only by her family but also by "friends" in the industry and the media. We failed her and we keep failing women in the public eye, recent examples like Amber Heard and Megan Thee Stallion come to mind.
I'm so happy Britney is finally free and I hope she can make up for lost time knowing she has the support of so many people. ...more

Ok actual book review: I think cramming 7 people's experience over a 10 year period into a book with barely 500 pages is insanity but they managed to do it in a way that felt authentic and in depth enough for the limited space they had.
Some parts felt a bit surface level but i understand why that had be done. Bts has to be really careful with the personal information and opinions they share so this is a rather minor criticism.
Big fan of the timeline at the end!! I've been an army for almost 5 years now and keeping track of everything that happens in their career is impossible so it's a nice thing to have in print.
And the QR-Codes????? Literally revolutionary. They made me re-discover a lot of old videos I had already forgotten about and performances I haven't watched in ages. Whoever came up with that needs their ass ate.
I always crave to hear bighit staff and industry professionals' opinions/testimonials when it comes to bts but this book is probably the wrong place for that so I hope that will be part of the disney+ documentary which is coming out soon!!
[EDIT] Actually, you know what? Let me write an actual review on this and knock my rating down a star cause I'm very bothered by t**spoiler alert** mid

I was not a fan of the first book. The thing that kept me going was the complicated and interesting relationship between Eli and Victor but they were kept apart for a big chunk of it which was disappointing considering the book is advertised as this "epic rivalry" yet they barely talked or interacted.
I went into the sequel hoping that we would dive deeper into their minds and their relationship with each other. Uncover a different side of them and make me FEEL for them. We got a little bit of backstory on Eli which was extremely intriguing but still Eli and Victor, the rivals that were compared to MAGNETO AND PROFESSOR X (!!!!), were kept apart for most of the story.
Despite this I started out enjoying Vengeful quite a bit. I didn't get what I wanted but I was willing to let Schwab convince me of this different direction. My enjoyment started to falter when the third act was approaching and I realized I had been reading a muddled grey mess with no sense of direction.
The addiction of Marcella and June seemed like a fun idea at first but once you sit back and analyze their existence it really just seems like they were wasted in a sequel they had no business appearing in. We ended up following way too many characters throughout the book. It comes as no surprise that we didn't dive into their characters nearly enough for me to truly care about any of them.
Not sure if this is controversial but Schwab is not very good at writing female characters. Towards the end Marcella turned from a psychopathic but fun villain into a caricature. I'm somewhat of a misandrist myself and even I found myself cringing at Schwab's attempted feminist commentary through Marcella. "Men this.. men that.." GIRL SHUT THE FUCK UP...more

things have gotten worse since we last spoke: just so dumb. people have called this "horrifying" when it's really just a bit gross, boring, and overall pointless. is this really what wlw have to settle for while mlm get all the gorgeously written queer horror? bye...
the enchantment: the shining meets catholicism meets the lighthouse (2019)... this was my favorite out of the three but it still fell flat in the end. too much buildup for a mediocre ending
you'll find it's like that all over: i would've maybe enjoyed this if they didn't explain the point of the story at the very end ...more
