P.S I Like You was both cute and compelling. Sure it had some predictable moments, but I was pleased with the overall direction of the story. Both main characters were well developed and the tropes were easily explored with realistic results.
At times the writing became too whiny, and almost unbearable which is why this did not rate a 5 star. ...more

Lets start with the overly graphic sex scenes, for a general romance (which i first thought was directed at YA readers) these were a very pleasant surprise. Sex-scenes within an actual plot, is not always done tastefully, but Mara Jacobs seems to know how to do this well.
But (and there is always a but) the actual story line was lacklustre, by page 30 I was 100% sick of hearing about Lucas' "Football Player Body", then by page 50 I was done with Lucas constantly calling himself an Oxy addict. Literally, every other sentence during his POV was about how he use to be an addict and he would never be one again and how no one could love an addict..... blah blah blah. I get it, he was hard on himself, but I think there is an art to writing without repetition.
Other than that, the story seemed to flow well, follow a realistic plot line (almost entirely) and had a cute, budding romance. Overall not a bad book, but absolutely not my new favourite. ...more

What a indestructible, adorable couple to throw the story of Little Red Riding Hood out of the park.
Scarlet was a overly-emotional character with a short fuse, and I just loved her character. I was hesitant to go into the book because I heard (and had read) that it was the worst in the series. I obviously did not think so at all, this was on par (if not slightly better than Cinder).
I mean, Wolf was a great character, but how could you go without mentioning Captain Carswell Thorne. I have a new book crush. He was charismatic and charming with just a hint of arrogance. Literally swooning.
I have got to hand it to Marissa Meyer, one thing she knows how to do well is portray extremely relate-able tough woman, with noticeable but easily overcome flaws. ...more

Cinder was a relate-able female character that did not take no for an answer. Someone I wish to be one day. She did not let her turmoil of life change how she lived her life, nor how she protected those she loved.
Iko was probably my favourite character though. Who wouldn't love a sassy, over the top, pop culture, prince loving robot. She always seemed to know exactly how to get Cinder back on track when she was stuck in her head.
One of my favourite things about this series was the reference to fairy tales. This was an absolutely brilliant writing point from Marissa Meyer perspective. It allowed for a steady plot where who ends up together is not hidden or brought about by love triangles, but only provided a framework to build her own story around. Had this not been stated as a Cinderella retelling, I probably wouldn't have even put the pieces together, not for a while anyway.
The best reference to the originally story was the loss of Cinder's "Shoe" at the ball, absolutely classic....more

I ended up giving it a 3 star because the concept was very intriguing and the effect on mental reliability was portrayed well.
However, the ending was absolute fucking balls. Seriously, I nearly threw the book across the room.
Ellen/Helen/wrongfully named Ellie - was a hard character to love, but even harder to forget. She hated herself, and those around her, she suffered trauma many could not understand and was held arms length by a mother who neglected her. Talk about a hard life. Ann Morgan's portrayal of Wrongfully Named Ellie was hard to stomach and hard to put down. You felt both sorry and angry for this adult who just refuse (I.E couldn't) get her life together. At first, the idea of a name change seems ridiculous to effect a person so badly, but when the reader is taken back in time to their childhood more mysteries begin to unfold and it becomes very clear why Wrongfully Named Ellie really doesn't get her life together.
This book was a good and unexpected read which i would recommend but probably wouldn't read again myself. ...more

I was interested in a different side to Wizard of Oz, especially when I don't love the originally anyway.
But I was quite shocked with the overall outcome. While reading it, I was not expecting to give higher than maybe a two rating, but a combination of the end and how I felt days after reading this, this rating boosted itself to a 3 and then a 4. First reading like fanfiction, then building up a interesting fictional world, I am very interested to continue the series.
Amy was however a big detractor from the novel. People in the world of Oz were literally dying and becoming homeless, and she kept talking as if she could relate because this one girl back home was mean to her. It was infuriating.
I was also a bit thrown off by Dorothy herself, I just do not understand the constant need to dress in the blue and white cheque design, seemed strange. She was however, a believably hate-able character with an easy to understand back story. I also loved the Tin-Man's sexual attraction to Dorothy, easily finding his weakness....more

This book was nothing special. The romance was cute which is why it ended up with 2 stars not just one. But the ending was annoying, unrealistic, predictable and completely ridiculous. Caymen was a whiny lead that seemed to lack any gumption for a character that grew up being open, honest and sarcastic. Overall a easy read but probably not one I will reach for again. But given the romance I would give Kasie West another shot....more
