The title of the book is extremely misleading IMO. I can think of many words I could use to describe Callum but brutal ain’t it. Wealthy, sure. Prim, sure. Bossy, sure. Fratty, definitely. But brutal? Nah.
It Started out strong but then spiraled out only to be wrapped up wayyy to neatly and off page. It was weird. Aida really pops off the page though which I loved. I liked the writing too. But if your looking for something that’s gonna figuratively punch you in the face with grit and brutality, this isn’t it. But it is a fun and quick read maybe for the beach or something like that. ...more

-The characters were good, if not reminiscent of the characters from Trickery.
-There was so much story introduced. I am under the assumption from the preview of the second book that it's not about Arlo and Lilou. If it isn't, why the hell set so much backstory rolling. Now I'm feeling gipped because this book read like a super long prequel that will never be resolved. -There just wasn't enough story to suck me in. It was like I was looking at a painting rather than jumping through a portal.
-There wasn't enough tension. I feel like Nees came out of left field and felt very non-threatening. And the conflict with him was introduced and solved in like one and a half chapters.
-The pacing felt uber weird.
Overall, moderately entertaining but felt underdeveloped and half-baked. The strongest element was the characters....more

Very one dimensional. She was just as defined as the side characters. I found her extremely unlikable. And it's frustrating that I hate her so much because there was no reason to! It was like she existed to hold our hand and guide us through all of her revelations. SO SLOWLY. Why she couldn't put two and two together I have no idea.
There was way too much going on. And yet, not enough. Because of the diverging plot lines, too much time was spent introducing everything and everyone. It was boring. A psychologist ruled by his inner devil hunting her down would have been a lot more concise an thrilling than what we were given.
