I can't think of anything I'd rather read aboIt's like reading the news inside the news when a journalist reveals what troubles him, what drives him. I can't think of anything I'd rather read about than an American trying to connect with refugees caught in the flux of countries in crisis. (Well, for one because that's my current focus -- but also because it touches on the obstacles of privilege, and the broader questions of mobility justice.)
I didn't mind that these essays traveled all over the place. And I almost appreciated the poetry criticism! And I was glad the essays dipped into the author's family story. I could feel Tom Sleigh's care in telling his stories, and an earnest need for us to see complexity as clearly as possible.
I started this at the beginning of the pandemic and read it slowly so I could think about each chapter a while....more
