The most glaring issue with this book is the editing! There were so so many instances of typos, unfinished sentences, and sentences that make no sense. There was even a pretty significant inconsistency. Besides the bad editing, this book was just so dramatic. Every little thing made the main character want to fall to the ground, or faint, or loose all oxygen. She really can't be that dramatic about everything. I did like how present Christianity was in this book. It didn't feel like it was added in, or out place. It just saturated every part of Violet's life. However, when God started audibly talking, I got really annoyed. The story was creative and I enjoyed it in the beginning but overall, I wouldn't recommend.

SadlThere was a lot of potential to this book, but ultimately I was disappointed. I wanted this to be a great historical fiction of a dramatic event. Sadly, the historical event only took up a few pages of the book and it didn't impact me as being super factual. I did like the relationship between the main characters and found a lot of the quotes relatable. However, they also put themselves in some pretty compromising situations that were not wise. There was also some good Christian content. The writing overall was not impressive and could have used a lot more proofreading (I just realized that I received an ARC so that may account for some of the writing mistakes).
Thank you to NetGalley for a free ARC.

I learned a lot about art (even though I didn't know what all of the paintings looked like), and I liked the way that the characters acted. I appreciated that they didn't purposely leave the adults out of the loop, but by necessity, only the children could save the day. I also loved that the protagonists were cousins so there wasn't any chance for romance (one of my pet peeves in middle grade/YA).
I would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a good book about art.
Content: one painting with nudity that is discussed. I think she did a great job of discussing it, both in the book and in the author's note. ...more

There's no romance, no name calling, the adults are actually helpful. Although I think Georgia O'Keefe paintings are horrendous, I still appreciate the amount of art that was in this book. The beginning was very strong, and I liked the setting (modern Hollywood, but Christian). The characters were fun. The relationships were cute. I loved all the old movie references and quotes (even though I've seen very few of them). It felled very much like a Full House dynamic amongst the cast and crew.
However, I grew increasingly annoyed with the bad theology/psychology in here. No, I don't expect to agree with every bit of theory an author believes. But when it's blatantly in your face, it's hard to ignore. There was so much "you're not responsible for your response to hard things in life" and even one instance of "God won't violate your freewill." Because this book had a lot of character development/counseling situations, that theory came out quite a bit.
Overall, fun clean story but with some bad theology.
Cleanliness: kisses, divorces, death of parents, pregnancy out of wedlock (referred to in the past)....more

I enjoyed a lot of the quotes in here, even if I disagree with his sentiments on Dumas, and his idea that if you love a book you will read it every 10 years, and the fact he said you could skip chapters.
but other than that, good book of quotes.
"When one has read a book, I think there is nothing so nice as discussing it with someone else, even though it sometimes produces rather fierce arguments."
"What is the point of keeping in touch with the contemporary scene? Why should one read authors one doesn't like because they happen to be alive at the same time as oneself? One might as well read everyone who had the same job or the same colored hair, or the same income, or the same chest measurements, as far as I can see."
"I tried to read... the Three Musketeers, but not only got tired but also found it disgusting... I don't think there is a single passage to show that Dumas had ever seen a cloud, a road, or a tree."
"If only one had time to read a little more: we either get shallow &broad or narrow and deep."

I found the rest of it too long and too... reflective and emotional. Everything just seemed so dramatic in the characters' heads (part of that is the narrators fault). I did think I was neat the Politano tried to write an "inspired by" Tale of Two Cities story. I happened to read that book earlier this year and somehow missed the whole plot line of the book. I am grateful to Politano for summarizing the story for me XD I won't say this is a bad book (I did rate it 3 stars) but it was just too dramatic for my tastes, and I don't think I will be returning to this author. ...more
