OFirst of all, do not go into this expecting some kind of thriller. I was very surprised to find out that it was not a tense story about an assassin. Once I got over that, I did in fact enjoy the story of a Christian attorney in Romania. Having read I Must Betray You I did have an understanding of the communism in Romania, but I enjoyed a glimpse at it from a Christian perspective. The conversion of the assassin was quite remarkable.
I did not love the parts where she "heard from God," or her refusal (and acknowledgment of said refusal) to save her marriage. ...more

Instead, itI was thinking this was going to be a historical fiction book along the lines of Ruta Sepetys, one that would actually teach me something. He did not have any people pleasing issues, see simply stood up for what he thought was right. Although he was an unbeliever I think we can still learn from his confidence. His life definitely had a myriad of hardships which he confidently tackled, just like any part of his life. This led him to very uncompassionate towards others who were suffering. What was really sad was how little time he spent with his family, or maybe this book just left out those details. But it seemed like his biggest passion was politics and he only occasionally visited his family.
Overall, not terrible, but a little dry and political for my tastes. ...more
