I enjoyed this even though it isn't much of a mystery. It evokes the place where the story unfolds and ultimately it is about death and "othering" of the outsider...something I've thought about more in the past couple years than I've ever done before. I read this almost compulsively and I enjoyed the story a great deal and I think the characters will stay with me a long time. ...more

I had watched the series on PBS and found it hard to forget. In the space of a few hours, I had finished reading the book. I agree with Mankell that Wallender is every man, with all the failings that most of us are prone to. The simple writing, the human tragedy and the househunting is what I most appreciated. A new obsession is born today. First Wallender mystery I've read and it will not be the last....more
