My trio enjoyed this read aloud. A fun read. 8-10yr recommendation.

We really enjoyed another book by this author, so we tried out this one.

Pro: It was well written. Lovely vocabulary. And funny. My children begged to read on.
Con: There is animal abuse, drunkenness, and mating talk between the hamsters. Animal abuse and drunkenness themes can be discussed per family preferences. However, these mating discussions were NOT necessary.
Trying to recapture some of the wording. "I would be considered bedded and wedded." "I will mate with you." And more.
There are baby hamsters as a result. This could have been handled more delicately....more

Having never read it, but loving Hatchet and skimming the last pages seemed to suggest a change of heart for the positive from the characters, so I bought it.
This does have content not appropriate for young children. Example: the "preacher" taking a woman to his hotel room. Sadly, these events do actually happen, but children don't need to be privy to this.
I would suggest this to be read aloud instead of individual reading. I did this and explained, appropriately, why I skipped sections.
It is a short read, so that's a benefit.
We discussed how long it took the characters to change---till the end of the book. I had expressed that I was disappointed to have to wait so long in the reading for such a change. I loved my child's response, "Sometimes it takes others a long time to change." So true....more

Maybe I missed it, but the time frame in which this story takes place was a mystery to me. The setting is in New York, in the city. Some of the activities where the kids wonder around the streets by themselves makes me think the time frame Is from an older era when kids could run around the streets, relatively safely.
My audience really enjoyed the antics among the siblings. We all thoroughly enjoyed the positive outlook on family life among all relationship groups.
Such a lovable story about friendships made-all through one rambunctious animal. Mildly sad for those sensitive to harsh material. **spoiler alert** I was expecting more of an old English read. I'm not sure why. No fault of the book. My own expectation. This is far from it. Clunky**spoiler alert** I was expecting more of an old English read. I'm not sure why. No fault of the book. My own expectation. This is far from it. Clunky to read since it is book one setting up the story and characters, which are all made up of course.
It has been the most intense book we have ever read. It has the Narnia feel to it, with the mystery and innocence.
For sensitive readers/audience. 10yrs+ Family pet is led to be believed dead. Family members are harassed and end up in physical scuffles by the antagonists. Including the mom.
I do love the guided questions in the back to help spur discussion about particular events in the book.
By the end, all of my crew was left wanting more and agreed to continue the series....more
