I have a friend who has a healing touch - she passes her hands around the body, about 2 inches off, and "feels" the places where things are blocked orI have a friend who has a healing touch - she passes her hands around the body, about 2 inches off, and "feels" the places where things are blocked or knotted or such. The chief protagonist in this book is not much different, though she has the gift many times more powerfully. This is very useful when the creatures you're called to help are mythological (or so we think).
This is an excellent story, with various myths inserted within the text (as her remembering the stories her Iranian father told her). Great issues with a struggling veterinary clinic, trust and friendship, power and control. Fabulous creatures, and danger. Also, the author has a very nice way with words. Here's one small example:
They lived at the mercy of the wolves and the weather, and neither was merciful., p.19
I'll be looking out for the next in the series....more

I like how the magic in it is different to any other that I've read, and I like how the author has explained how it works without being at all stodgy (I began reading another book recently and had to discard it after one page - this makes me wary for a while, but this book renewed my faith in the number of good writers there are)....more

Great characterisation and some very funny moments with Isis's mother being a fake psychic and Gray's father being on the lunatic fringe. But there is also some great action and some seriously horrifying moments. Fantastic pace and excellent all round....more
