He seems like a humble person who has worked hard to fulfill his goals.
When he first won it seemed like a great come from nowhere story. However it was only a come from nowhere story to me. He had already done a lot of work before entering the public eye. It is fair to say though that he had an untraditional background into entering the sport.
I've categorized this as a leadership book because although he's an individual athlete, he is a leader of a team and must make leadership decisions when running his career.
The book does a great job in outlining the steps that happen outside of the Olympic window. There are a lot of important decisions that are made such as how to train, where to train, hiring and switching coaches, sponsorship and a whole lot of other important decisions that are made.
His athletic career may be wrapping up but I'm sure he will be an important Canadian athlete for years to come like Donovan Bailey.
Outside of the book, one sign that the life of an athlete is short is that I noticed that there was already an Andre deGrasse road in Markham, Ontario during the covid 19 pandemic, that's already 4 years ago.
I recommend this book to Canadians who like sports and like the Olympics....more

ZolI was a fan of Roy Halladay when he pitched for the jays. I was shocked by his death. I was actually surprised he made the hall of fame so easily. Zolecki tells the Halladay story warts and all. Halladay had ups and downs and great success and some failures. His wife also offered some insightful thoughts. I found the sections on psychology and mental toughness very interesting. From the outside you would think he had it all but he had doubts and suffered at times.
One interesting anecdote didn't make it in the book and I thought it was interesting when I heard it but don't know where I heard it from. Halladay supposedly brought his family to Medieval times a lot in toronto. I've enjoyed medieval times but i guess when you are on a baseball ace salary you can enjoy medieval times a lot of times....more

The tone and prose were very academic. Learned a few interesting facts about Taiwan, China and the relationship between the two. As someone who has a fair knowledge of Taiwan I felt that the level of detail and content of the papers were understandable to me.
When I first started reading I thought that there was a bias towards Chinese views but I felt the book was fairly balanced.
I would recommend the book for people that want to learn more about Taiwan and China but already have some background on the topic....more
