I read this for a Parent/Child book club at my local library. I’m not usually a book club person because I’m too much of a mood reader, but I figured I’d try it. And I didn’t love this. It was ok. A little mystery investigation by a fifth grader about a library that burned down. With some ghosts and a cat. I’m not sure if I’m gonna do this again. ...more

It was very well written and I enjoyed Artemisia. But most of the book was just Artemisia and the spirit possessing her having conversations in her head. There were occasionally other character around but not often.
This is a fantasy world filled with all kinds of ghosts that are captured, destroyed, freed, or used by nuns and priests. Artemisia becomes possessed by a powerful type of spirit and goes on the run and eventually has to fight another powerful spirit that is trying to rise. She makes friends with her spirit and they remain entwined in the end. There is no romance in this book.
A lot of reviews mention that Artemisia has anxiety or PTSD. But I thought she had autism. I have autism myself and I related to a lot of her experience. The way she hated crowds and socializing could be due to anxiety. But there were a lot of other things that I don’t think could be explained by anxiety or PTSD. Such as how Artemisia had trouble understanding facial expressions or voice inflections. There were several times where she mentioned that she didn’t understand what someone was trying to tell her with a “pointed look”. Also several times where ppl misunderstood her, assumed she meant something different. Also she was often very honest and blunt, and she didn’t understand why ppl would ask her something if they didn’t expect an honest answer. Also there were a few mentions of how she made other ppl uncomfortable because her face was often blank or emotionless. ...more

I knew it was supposed to be inspired by Peter Pan, but this still isn’t what I expected. It feels like the YA PNRs I used to read 10-15 years ago. Like the post-Twilight era. Small town mystery vibes. It’s really not what I read anymore. Also there’s zero LGBTQ+ rep. Not even a bi side character. Which was a bit disappointing. And this doesn’t really have a romance. If you want to know what I mean… (view spoiler)[Wendy’s feelings for Peter were not a big focus. They were just starting to develop, but her focus was definitely finding the lost kids. And in the end, Peter had to return to Neverland, so they probably won’t ever see each other again. And she didn’t seem that sad about it. She misses him after but it wasn’t like a huge hard decision for them to separate. (hide spoiler)]
The ending was also sort of unsatisfying because Wendy’s story was so full of holes I find it realistic that anyone would believe her....more

This was very epic and easily my favourite in the series. The relationships between the friends and especially Yumeko and Tatsume, and Okame and Daisuke. The epilogue was absolutely beautiful and perfect.
But overall, this is still my least favourite of Julie's series, which makes me really sad. Julie's The Iron Fey series is what first got me into reading YA so long ago, and she is still one of my favourite authors. But something about this one just didnt work for me. I didnt feel invested in the story and the characters as much as I wanted to be. This is how I would rate all of Julie's series overall:
I think this series is not for me. Quitting at page 85. I gave the first book 3/5 because I really liked Gideon but I was still really confused and thI think this series is not for me. I gave up and skipped to the last page. Completely out of context I could tell it had a HFN but I didn’t care to find out more.
I will admit I made a huge mistake in thinking this was historical because of the cover. My bad! I read the blurb but I assumed everything mentioned in it was still happening in a time past. ...more

I was loving this book pretty much instantly! It was hard to resist Gideon's unique charm. And I was interested to find out what would unfold in this unique world. But as things went on I just got more and more confused.
A necromancer and their cavalier from each house is invited by the emperor to compete to become some sort of immortal. Gideon is the cavalier of the Ninth House. They all travel to an abandoned city/tomb/planet(?) where they find no one except a single facilitator and skeletal servants. They are abandoned and forced to compete in a series of challenges that reveal new keys and doors. But then people start dying which was not part of the plan. They have to figure out the challenges and who is the murderer before they all turn up dead. Its a giant game of Clue in space. But with two characters from each house, that is 18 characters that you have to keep track of in order to understand who's dead, who's alive, who has a key, how many are left, who was seen last. It was all too much for me. And everyone has an extremely weird name that my brain just wanted to skim over which really didn't help matters. The only names I could remember easily were Gideon and Corona because they were familiar. And after Gideon started to shorten Harrowhark Nonagesimus to just Harrow, that helped a lot.
But I loved Gideon so much, she was just such a ridiculously likable character. I don't really know how to describe her but you'd just have to read this to meet her. I am a little concerned about where things will go from here, but I will definitely read book 2 to find out....more

I'm not too sure how I feel about this one. I loved Clariel. She was a bad ass heroine. She didnt take shit from anyone. In the end, I still dont understand how she could have made that leap....more
