It had a good start, and I was intrigued of the concept of the main character visualizing things through letters. It was quirky and cute, throw in a guy that she is starts dating, and then things slowly go downhill until the story is like a freight train out of control. Too much thrown in at once, and the story ended up lacking substance for me.

I owned, or may still own the dvds of the seasons, things need to be unpacked from way too many years ago. I am a fan of the show, as I love monster hunting and cryptzoology, plus there are some things that are just plain spooky in the series.
Josh Gates, the host wrote this memoir and it is highly entertaining for any fan of the show. He talks about how he got the job as the host for it, as well as incidents he had while traveling around the world filming. In between these chapters are "case files" where it breaks down interesting tidbits on some of the creatures that he looked for all over the world. There are also photos, not glossy, but photos that reflect him and his travels.
Highly recommend for any fans of the show, and anyone that is interested in the unknown. ...more

I started from the beginning once again, and I have no idea what was going on the first time, but it hooked me right away on this reattempt. Mysterious thriller, with weather elements thrown in for good measure. Nothing like a snow storm and being with a group of people you don't really know to get a thriller going.
Premise is a young girl is traveling back home for Christmas. Part of her flight travel plans get cancelled due to a blizzard. It is still hours away from her final destination if driving. Luckily on the plane ride, she met a nice college student that ends up being able to get a rental car, and they add three other young adults to their group for a total of five and decide to drive to the destination their last flight was supposed to take them on.
Throughout the book, there are added "secret admirer" letters written to the main character, and part of the fun is trying to figure out who wrote them to her, or is it someone she knows that may be following her and the others in the car. Add in extra surprises along the way and it is an entertaining read that will keep you guessing until the very end. ...more

The title really intrigued me, anything with old school mobsters usually interests me as I love the history of Las Vegas, no matter how dark some it may be. Maybe that is what I was hoping for more of. Other than that the writing was dry at times, and I had to really make myself read it to get it finished. I hate not finishing books. ...more

He is not an American born author, and English is not his first language so this has been translated from Dutch. I loved "Hex", and this is the "second" book in the series. Honestly, you could read this as a standalone.
The premise of the story is a mysterious old ship shows up in a town, in the middle of a field with no indication of how it got there, and there is no one aboard it. The ship is very old, think 1600 or 1700 type of ship. Everyone that enters it goes missing, or something mysterious happens to them as a coverup to explain away their disappearance.
A boy who has lost a couple people to this mysterious ship tries to investigate what is really happening, which results in a lot more twists and turns to the story.
I didn't find it as enjoyable as the first book I read by this author, but I still liked it. A helpful part is that when the author referred to things in his homeland that the casual reader may not know what they are and there isn't an exact translation for it, there was annotations to reference to.
Overall if you enjoy the unkown, and you don't mind translated to English books, it will probably be a good fit for you. ...more

Overall I am skeptical about them, but the stories are interesting, and I will keep reading them. They may not be as factual as I once believed them to be, however they do make a good story for readers that enjoy stories of the paranormal. It is up to each individual reader to decide for themselves of what they believe if the story actually happened, or if it is just a fantastical tale.
The writing isn't too complex, it is an easy read, and if the subject of paranormal activity interests you it will make the pages fly by even quicker. ...more

I'm also not afraid to admit it, or share what I've read, hence this review.
In this entertaining book, it takes the reader through a history of potental coverups of alien visitation over the years, not just in the modern era. Some of the reading could be dry at time, but overall, I found it to be entertaining, and also add that "what if" into my brain. It will lead me to other books and topics similar to it, which I hope will keep me entertained for years.

I've stumbled across some of his other work in the fiction realm but have only read his non-fiction. Unlike the first book of his I read which was "If You Tell" this one was just not as captivating for me. Maybe it is due to the extreme nature of that other book, but this one just did not seem as shocking. For the time period in which is happened, it was probably a shocking story, but in today's modern world, the shock factor just wasn't there for me.
The premise is the story of a woman who is married to a preacher and yearns for more. I think a lot of women could identify with her, even if they may not say so themself. The book builds up her history, with the tale of how she ends up divorcing her husband and marrying her second one whom mysteriously vanishes. When her next husband dies under mysterious circumstances (husband number three at this point), she becomes the fixture of a criminal investigation.
Most of the book is the tale of her life, and very little in comparison to the criminal aspect in it, some of it even felt glossed over.
I will continue to read his work, just felt like it was missing something and was medicore at best. ...more

I wouldn't recommend it for anyone that isn't into non-fiction, it could be potentially dry to some people that aren't into the historical events of what a library originally was to how they came to be what they are today.
There is also a good reference list at the end to help you further you understanding and satisfy any additional curiosity of the subject. There is no explanation of when or how it will happen, just that by 11:59pm that day, your existance will cease to be in the physical form on eath.
In a future, this is a reality found within the pages of this book. There is a service that notifies people shortly after midnight of the day they are set to die that they are going to die that same day. Some have the full day to live, others may have shorter time period to live. There are industries focused on giving life experiences, in a safe way of course, to those that have their time limited. There are also readerboards for these individuals to connect with others in their same situation. In some of these connections, the two individuals agree to meet and live their last day together, two people who will not see tomorrow living their life for the present day. This is the case that happens within the pages of this book.
Two strangers agree to meet up and live their last day together, coming from two separate worlds, they have both have death looming in their future. The book also follows the lives of others that also get calls, and people that work for the company that makes these calls. Each person has their own personal struggles, and the pages are filled with depth of various characters.
Listed as YA fiction, or teen as it is in my library, it may be too heavy for a lot of younger teens. However, there are good lessons to learn, and the reading despite the dark topic of death is intriguing. I didn't want to put it down and wanted to keep reading to see what next would happen, whether it was the main two characters, or any of the several supporting characters. There were several surprises along the way. ...more

I am doubtful I I love being in book groups and clubs, the majority of the ones I am in can be found on facebook, along with a couple in person ones. I am doubtful I would have ever discovered this book if it wasn't for one of those online book groups. This particular group there are several "traveling" book chat groups. Most of them focus on one book, and you pass the book through a list, annotating however you would like and then it gets back to its original owner with everyone's notes to keep. In this group for this book, it takes it another step with a smaller list of people and we all have a book that we shuffle from one person to the next. This is my second book I have received for this group. I haven't had great experiences with my first two I've read, hoping the third will break that cycle. The theme of this particular group is thriller/mystery/horror.
In this book, a woman after the demise of her marriage moves back to her hometown along with her two daughters, her father doesn't have the best reputation in town based on how he ran the local boys school. Right when she gets to town a young woman goes missing, and there is a hoopla about finding her. While the search is on for that young woman, the main character faces demons from her own past while trying to settle into a better life for herself and her girls. Her oldest daughter then goes missing as well. The pages are filled with the different perspectives of many characters, making the timeline confusing at times, especially since it goes back to the main character's own youth.
The writing was sometimes hard to read as well. I am a book lover, and I had to fight super hard to get to the finish of it. I hate to DNF a book but I was tempted to several times.

You are never too old to read what you want, and sometimes that means entertaining kids books like this gem I found at my local library. I am already looking forward to the sequel whenever it is released. I actually own a copy of this, but with my book shed and never ending supply of books as well as my addiction to the library, it just hasn't made its way up my TBR list.
Luckily my LiterALLY Bookish group has members that host traveling books and this book is one of the ones that has been hosted. I just finished it recently and I am so happy I used the traveling book option to get this pushed up further on my list.
It has a bit of magic, witchcraft and some potential enemy to lover elements. The book takes place in the time where witches are hunted down, but there is a mysterious "moth" that saves women that have been marked for death due to their connections to witchcraft. Other than that I don't want to give too much away.

Bring on the Underworld movie vibes! Yes, there are vampires, werewolves and humans, and they all need to find a way to coexist together, even if it means am arranged marriage between two species that typically do not get along. That sums up the majority of the book. Fighting between the vampires and werewolves, betrayal and some romance.
I gave it a 3 instead of a 2 and I am not really sure why. Maybe because it really needs a 2.75 or 2.5?

I love ghost stories, whether they are true or just a spooky imagined story. I've had experiences in my life that have led me down this path, and I probably keep turning these for answers.
This one falls under the non-fiction realm, you won't find it in the fiction section of your library, if you do, it is misplaced. Despite this usually being one of my favorite types of books, I just was not feeling the author. She is a psychic that has the sight and can see ghosts, according to her it runs in her family. I may just be put off due to all the other books I've read on the subject, and she throws most of that out the window in how she describes how she sees ghosts and what they really are and also how ghost hunters aren't always telling the truth. I may in the future change my mind about how she tells the stories, however it will take some author people to write about it in a similar way, when sharing their own experiences.
The thing I did like about the book was how she broke down the different types of ghosts, and how she goes about helping them if she can. It has an easy to follow layout and you can find what interests you the most quickly and effectively. Other than that, I am still a skeptic in some of the things she talks about, which is hard for me to say with my love on the subject of ghosts. ...more
