That emptiness cannot be banished, and so some days we wake with the feeling of the wind blowing through, and we must simply endure it as the boy did.”
Beautiful. Haunting. Intriguing.
Bardugo can create such magic with her beautiful writing! This was exactly what I needed to restore my love for Bardugo's writing after I was disappointed in Shadow and Bone. This book is a collection of six fairytale-like illustrated stories set in the Grishaverse.
The highlights of these short stories are :
1. Reimagined fairytale retellings with dark themes 2. Unexpected plot twists 3. Stunning illustrations
This collection features the different worlds that Bardugo creates, and these stories are filled with creepiness and intrigue. Each story conveys different messages which is totally different from the actual fairytales. Throughout the whole book, I was either mesmerized by Bardugo’s magical writing style, in awe of illustrations or just waiting to see what would happen next. The Language of Thorns is just an all-around beautiful book.
It is not necessary to read any of the Grishaverse books beforehand, although I think the tales will be more fun that way.
¤ Ayama and The Thorn Wood ⭐⭐⭐⭐. 5
“This goes to show you that sometimes the unseen is not to be feared and that those meant to love us most are not always the ones who do.”
This story is from Zemeni and is retelling of a sort of mix between Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast, about a strong hearted ordinary girl and a beastly prince. This story breaks the stereotype of having a beautiful or handsome character as the main character of fairytales. I also loved how the characters in the story also told stories, so the book-within-a-book feeling was strong here. It was my second favourite in the collection.
¤ The Too-clever Fox ⭐⭐⭐. 5
“A lesser creature might have closed his eyes and prayed for nothing more than a quick death. But if Koja had words, then he had hope.”
It is a Ravkan tale about a little fox Koja who uses his wits to get him out of some dangerous situations. This almost has the feeling of a fable. There wasn’t as many twists in this story as in the previous one, the ending was still surprising.
P.S Bardugo confirmed that this story is our very own witty thief Kaz’s favourite!!!! <3
¤ The Witch of Duva ⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Dark things have a way of slipping in through narrow spaces.”
I think the idea for this Ravkan tale came from Hansel and Gretel. It follows Nadya as she finds out the secret of how girls went missing in Duva. The story definitely was the most disturbing and creepy ones for me. The ending has a big twist that I did not see coming a mile away, and it just made the story all that much better.
¤ The Little Knife ⭐⭐⭐. 5
“She never worried when her beauty faded, for in her reflection she always saw a free woman.”
This Ravkan tale gathers all of the familiar elements from many old fairy tales: a competition for the hand of a beautiful maiden and a trio of impossible tasks .In this story, Grisha power of a Tidemaker was mentioned and used. It’s a good story with more lesson, like Too Clever Fox. Still it managed to surprise me at the ending like all the others.
¤ The Soldier Prince ⭐⭐⭐
“Who are you when no one picks you up to hold you?” asked the Rat King. “When no one is looking at you, or whispering to you, who are you then?"
This Kerch tale is a reimagined The Nutcracker retelling with Grisha Fabrikator magic and the spirit of a toy which comes alive. This was all about self-discovery and knowing the importance of making our own story. But I felt that the ending was very eerie and unsettling.
¤ When Water Sang Fire ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“This is the problem with making a thing forbidden. It does nothing but build an ache in the heart.”
This Fjerdan story is a retelling of The little mermaid, about a sildroher mermaid named Ulla who dreams of being able to use her singing magic as she chooses. It poses questions on the cost of magic, the sacrifices we make for our ambitions, and the price we pay to earn social acceptance. I loved every moment of this story and it was my most favorite from the whole collection. This was no doubt the perfect strong story to end the book.
P.S The Darkling made an appearance in this story!! "The boy’s clothes were black, his hair blacker still, and he was looking directly at Ulla, the weight of his stare heavy ballast."
Overall there wasn’t a single story in this book that I didn’t liked or enjoyed reading. Every fairytale was just so well-thought-out. It is a treat for all the Bardugo fans. Even if you haven’t read any Bardugo books yet and if you're interested in dark twists in fairytales, then this one is perfect for you!...more

What a delightfully dark and cruel book it was! The hype was real for me, but not from the very beginning. The first 200 pages are slow and mostly the set up for the next books, but I am so glad that I persevered because it was definitely worth it. I definitely did not see that ending coming, and I want the next book!! Much love to the super cute cruel vampi for this amazing reco :-D <3
Highlights of the book : - Flawed and badass characters - Beautiful world setting - Drama, action, politics, spying, glamour, betrayal - Complex relationships - Trigger warning : bullying, abuse, murder, suicide
¤¤Welcome to Faeri ¤¤
"In Faerie, there are no fish sticks, no ketchup, no television."
Faerie is a beautiful place, full of gorgeous faes, grand balls where the guests dance, and grand mansions. However, if you look beneath the surface you can see the darkness and cruelty that the beauty hides, the rivers have deadly creatures in it,poisons are numerous and varied, the mortals are drugged on faerie fruit and made into mindless servants, there are always endless murders, bullies and court politics.
While at the start of the book it took me a little time to get into the world, it wasn’t long before I was in love! There is so much depth in it. The setting takes place mostly within the realm of faerie, though there are bits of the human world interspersed, which I enjoyed even more.
¤¤Storyline¤¤
Jude witnessed her parents’ brutal murder, then she and her two sisters Vivi and Taryn are whisked away by the murderer Madoc to live in Faerie. Ten years later, they’re still living in Faerie and all three are struggling to fit in. Taryn wants to marry into Faerie, Vivi wants to escape to the human world, and Jude is trying to find her place as a mortal and has to fight against bullying of Prince Cardan and gang. With the current High King ready to step down, things will get more dangerous in faeri.
¤¤Characters ¤¤
¤ Jude
“If I cannot be better than them, I will be so much worse.”
Jude, the main female character, is a mortal girl in the land of immortal faeries. She wants to be stronger and smarter than the fae, because she doesn't like being vulnerable, and she wants to protect herself and her sisters. I found her character arc very interesting. She appears selfless and noble, but she was badass and such a schemer. But I didn't find her character too loveable.
¤ Prince Cardan
“He looks like a faerie lover stepped out of a ballad, the kind where no good comes to the girl who runs away with him.”
Prince Cardan is youngest heir of the High King and has no interest in getting the throne. His main interest is in tormenting and humiliating Jude. But there's much more to him than what is on the surface. I did not expect for him to grow on me as he did, and I am anxiously waiting to find out where his part in this story is headed. So yeah, I enjoyed reading about the sarcastic Cardan the most.
¤ Vivi
"When Vivi wasn’t reminiscing about home, she was a terror. She screamed and pinched us when we were content. Eventually, she stopped it, but I believe there is a part of her that hates us for adapting. For making this our home."
Jude's older sister Vivi, is half-fae but she hates everything about faery and her rebellion is to enjoy all the human joys of malls and has a secret human girlfriend. She also hates that her sisters both tries to fit in so much. Still Vivi is always on Jude’s side, no matter what she does. She is the coolest elder sister, and I loved her so much.
¤ Taryn
“Nice things don’t happen in storybooks,” Taryn says. “Or when they do happen, something bad happens next. Because otherwise the story would be boring, and no one would read it.”
Taryn and Jude have a complicated relationship as twins. They are so close but at the same time, so different. She seems loyal to Jude, but there are secrets she keeps that get in the way of that loyalty as the story unfolds. All in all, Taryn was so annoying and I kinda hated her towards the end.
¤ Madoc
"I may be cruel, a monster, and a murderer, but I do not shirk my responsibilities."
Madoc is Vivi's father and also the killer of Jude and Taryn's parents. Jude cannot help but see Madoc as a father figure as he raised her and her sisters, and treated her like his own, even though she is not. I liked and disliked Madoc. Jude and his relationship is a complicated one, I'm curious to see how it will go in the next book.
Overall, this was a complex novel. A lot of it did feel like setting up for the next book, but when things do pick up, there's no time to pause and breath. If you’re into fae, bloodshed, dark romance and intense court politics then be sure to pick it up!...more

I’m so filled with emotions after finishing this book.I loved every part of Crooked Kingdom.Bardugo's writing is so addictive that I was wondering if each page of this book was drenched in the addictive drug Jurda Parem! Kaz, Inej, Nina, Matthias, Jesper and Wylan will forever be marked as one of my most beloved fictional crew. That ending though.... [image]
1) Six of Crows : ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 2) Crooked Kingdom : ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Crows remember human faces. They remember the people who feed them, who are kind to them. And the people who wrong them, too. They don’t forget. They tell each other who to look after and who to watch out for.”
Plot Summary
The story picks up almost immediately where Six of Crows left off. After being double-crossed in the last heist ,the crew is battered, hurt and betrayed. One of their own must be rescued. All this without running afoul of the other gangs of Ketterdam, or the powerful nations who are descending on their city, in order to locate Kuwei, who is the only one who knows how to create Jurda Parem, the dangerous drug that dramatically heightens Grisha power.
The world setting
The world is still every bit as wonderful.Even though the story stays at Ketterdam this time still it was fascinating with the different characteristics of each race and country, their language, mannerisms and customs. There's also map of Ketterdam in the beginning of the book which I found myself turning to constantly to see exactly where the characters were.
The writing style
I've become a fan of Leigh Bardugo’s writing. From plot to romance to action, she can write any aspect and totally nail it.
“Where do you think the money went?" he repeated. "Guns?" asked Jesper. "Ships?" queried Inej. "Bombs?" suggested Wylan. "Political bribes?" offered Nina. They all looked at Matthias. "This is where you tell us how awful we are," she whispered. He shrugged. "They all seem like practical choices.”
The usual humourous and witty banters are back! There were several jobs pulled off throughout the novel and I was left amazed at Bardugo’s ability to write such excellent twists into each one.
The characters, the ships *Contains mild spoilers*

"No mourners, no funerals. Another way of saying good luck. But it was something more. A dark wink to the fact that there would be no expensive burials for people like them, no marble markers to remember their names, no wreaths of myrtle and rose."
To me, the highlight of this series is its characters. In Crooked Kingdom, Bardugo went deeper and explored everyone's weakness and dreams. The romance is never sappy in the book, never once forced and it all feels very natural.
•Kaz Brekker:
“Greed is your god, Kaz." He almost laughed at that. "No, Inej. Greed bows to me. It is my servant and my lever.”
Kaz,the evil mastermind who has an actual heart, no matter how much he tries to hide it.He was back with his crazy and beautiful scheming, making insane strategies and always trying to be many steps ahead of others. Kaz has got to be one of my most favourite anti-heroes.
•Inej Ghafa:
"What about the nobodies and the nothings, the invisible girls? We learn to hold our heads as if we wear crowns. We learn to wring magic from the ordinary. That was how you survived when you weren’t chosen, when there was no royal blood in your veins. When the world owed you nothing, you demanded something of it anyway."
Inej, the Wraith, she is faithful, loyal and strong.I grew to love and appreciate her character so much more in this book.I have never read any character like her, made of quiet courage and will.I loved her Suli proverbs and she had to face a strong opponent in this book.
•Kaz and Inej:
“I would have come for you. And if I couldn't walk, I'd crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we'd fight our way out together-knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that's what we do. We never stop fighting.”
Inej never quite knows where she stands with Kaz -if he is attached to her only because she’s useful to him, or if he feels something more for her. But I think the above quote describes the two of them well enough. They’re always there for each other and will always save the other one, no matter what. And their tension felt realistic considering all they’ve been through and how they left things in the end also felt right.
•Nina Zenik:
“You’re better than waffles, Matthias Helvar.” A small smile curled the Fjerdan’s lips. “Let’s not say things we don’t mean, my love.”
Nina, the Grisha heartrender, she is witty, brave, flirty, and food-loving.Nina’s struggle with the addiction and withdrawal from the Jurda Parem was depicted in a very realistic manner. It was interesting to see her have a new power.
•Matthias Helvar:
“Jesper ran a finger up Wylan's forearm, and Wylan flushed a vibrant pink. Matthias couldn't help but sympathize with the boy. He knew what it was to be out of your depth, and he sometimes suspected they could forgo all of Kaz's planning and simply let Jesper and Nina flirt the entirety of Ketterdam into submission.”
Matthias, the druskelle witch-hunter, whose heart has been melted and is finally letting his softer side come out – all because of Nina. While I loved his transformation in Six of crows,I felt that he didn't have much role in this book, except protecting Nina and in the ending.
•Nina and Matthias:
“I,” she said, planting a hand on her hip, “am a delicate flower.” “You aren’t a flower, you’re every blossom in the wood blooming at once. You are a tidal wave. You’re a stampede. You are overwhelming.”
To me,Nina and Matthias were the best couple in the whole series. The tension between Nina and Matthias evaporated in Crooked Kindom and I was so happy to see them finally resolve their issues with each other.I’m glad they were able to experience some happiness.
•Jesper Fahey:
“Don’t worry, Da. People point guns at each other all the time in Ketterdam. It’s basically a handshake.”
Jesper, the sharpshooter, who is funny and has a gambling addiction.I was looking forward to more of his backstory which I got in this book. His loving relationship with his father and his inner turmoil with his addiction is described so well that makes us sympathise with him so much.
•Wylan Van Eck:
“You know, Wylan, one of these days I’m going to stop underestimating you.” There was a brief pause and then, from somewhere up ahead, he heard Wylan say, “Then you’re going to be a lot harder to surprise.”
Wylan, the runaway merchant's son,who despite being cute, shy and adorable,is a demolitions expert. He gets his own POV in this book and I loved how much he became such an in-depth and dynamic character. His tragic backstory and struggle for illiteracy was heart-warming.
•Jesper and Wylan:
"That’s terrible,” said Wylan. “It’s brilliant.” Jesper winked. “Just like you.” Wylan blushed daylily pink.
Wylan and Jesper were the only ship that had yet to sail in Six of Crows so I was very happy to see these two finally get together. Jesper likes to flirt with Wylan to make him blush. They were so cute together! And they also had a mistaken identity scene.
•Now let's not forget the amazing friendship between all the characters.
“But they were his first friends, his only friends, and Wylan knew that even if he’d had his pick of a thousand companions, these would have been the people he chose.”
The Dregs are friendship goals! Nina and Inej's friendship with contrasting personality still continues in this book.I also loved the friendship between Jesper and Inej and how Inej helped Jesper to gain courage for handling his addictions.
Drawbacks
• Something unfortunate happened in the ending which I think was unnecessary. Why did you have to do it Leigh?? • The characters are still 15-17 years old but there was not much references of their ages in this book and they are amazing so I didn't really mind their ages anymore. • I’m not ready to let go of these characters, to let go of Ketterdam. I want more books in this series!!
Overall, Crooked Kingdom is a brilliant read.If you enjoy fabulously complex characters, anti-heroes, phenomenal world building, intricate plots, and romances that will make you smile, this is the series for you!And if you've enjoyed Six of crows and haven't picked up Crooked Kingdom yet, then what are you waiting for?...more

“The heart is an arrow. It demands aim to land true.”
I came in to Six of Crows with high expectations. And after reading it,I can safely say that this book deserves all the hype it gets and I have a new addition to my list of favourite authors-Leigh Bardugo. The story is very suspenseful and entertaining, with some great twists along the way. It’s so well-written, creative, engrossing, addictive. The characters are brilliant, the ships are amazing.
Plot summary
Set in the city of Ketterdam, the Barrel is home to the cities’ thieves, gambling dens, and pleasure seekers. Criminal mastermind Kaz Brekker is approached by a merchant Van Eck, who wants Kaz’s gang to retrieve a kidnapped scientist who made the powerful and extremely addictive drug jurda parem. Van Eck is willing to pay the enormous sum of 30 million kruge if Kaz is successful. Kaz picks five others to help him do the job. It’s almost certainly a suicide mission, but the reward money is worth the risk.
The world setting
"Ketterdam – a canvas of black, grey, and brown, tangled streets dense with mist and coalsmoke, ships of every kind in the harbour, pulsing with the rush and bustle of trade."
The world building created wonderful mental pictures in my mind and being introduced to such a world was a thrilling experience. I loved the variety in races, cultures, and languages: Kaelish, Fjerdan, Suli, Zemeni, Shu, and Ravkan. It also has some fantasy characters called Grisha who are born with abilities to manipulate various aspects of the natural world.
The writing
I fell hard for leigh bardugo’s beautiful writing. All the characters were brought to life by their sparkling dialogue.
"Jesper knocking his head against the hull and cast his eyes heavenward. "Fine. But if Pekka Rollins kills us all, I'm going to get Wylan's ghost to teach my ghost how to play the flute just so that I can annoy the hell out of your ghost." Brekker's lips quirked. "I'll just hire Matthias' ghost to kick your ghost's ass." "My ghost won't associate with your ghost," Matthias said primly, and then wondered if the sea air was rotting his brain.”
I absolutely loved all the witty banters of Leigh Bardugo.Comedy blends in perfectly with the dark and magical undertones of the book.
The characters and the ships *Contains mild spoilers*

"A gambler, a convict, a wayward son, a lost Grisha, a Suli girl who had become a killer, a boy from the Barrel who had become something worse. Six people, but a thousand ways this insane plan could go wrong."
My favourite thing about Six of Crows is the characters hands down. They’re so well developed, interesting and morally ambiguous.
•Kaz Brekker:
"When everyone knows you’re a monster, you needn’t waste time doing every monstrous thing.”
Kaz Brekker is the anti-hero whom I loved even as he is unleashing his no mercy side. He’s cunning, sly, mysterious, disturbed, and yet still has a heart that he tries to keep hidden. Best of all though, he’s unpredictable.
•Inej Ghafa:
“You may still die in the Dregs.” Inej’s dark eyes had glinted. “I may. But I’ll die on my feet with a knife in my hand.”
Inej is the spymaster, the girl who can get all the secrets from anyone. She’s a loyal and trustworthy friend and she actively works to not hurt people, unless you betray the people she’s loyal to – then she’s absolutely ruthless and merciless.
•Kaz and Inej:
"She'd laughed, and if he could have bottled the sound and gotten drunk on it every night, he would have. It terrified him."
Kaz and Inej have this slow intense romance building up.He’s so gruff that he doesn’t really even want to think about romance, but it is clear that Inej is getting under his skin. I love them so much together, yet I love that they still stand as full individuals even while they’re apart.
•Nina Zenik:
“It's not natural for women to fight." "It's not natural for someone to be as stupid as he is tall, and yet there you stand.”
Nina is a Grisha heartrender, with the ability to crush hearts with a flick of her finger. Nina is my most favourite character.I love her abilities, her smart mouth, her love of food, and pretty much everything about her.
•Matthias Helvar:
"Trickery is not my native tongue, but I may learn to speak it yet."
Matthias is a druskelle witch-hunter who became a convict.I didn't like him at first. But seeing him evolve from who he was at the beginning to the end was my favourite character journey in this book.
•Nina and Matthias:
"I have been made to protect you. Only in death will I be kept from this oath. It was the vow of the drüskelle to Fjerda. And now it was Matthias’ promise to her."
The interesting part about Nina and Matthias is that they absolutely love each other and neither of them is happy with this situation. A lot of the relationship between Nina and Matthias showed not only what a powerful force love is but also how much people can change and grow because of love.
•Jesper Fahey:
”Take good care of my babies,” Jesper said as he handed them over to Dirix. “If I see a single scratch or nick on those, I’ll spell forgive me on your chest in bullet holes.”
Jesper is the crew’s quick-witted sharpshooter with a gambling addiction. I think he hadn't so many flashbacks as others and I was sad about it but I hope I'll see much of Jesper in next book.
•Wylan Van Eck:
“Always hit where the mark isn't looking.” "Who's Mark?" asked Wylan.”
Wylan is a merchant's son whose cute and unassuming exterior hides an explosive, artistic and musical prodigy. He is the only one of the six who didn't have a POV. I think I didn’t get to know him very well in this book but I'm counting on more Wylan too in Crooked Kingdom.
•Jesper and Wylan:
“Wylan said, “Just girls?” Jesper restrained a grin. “No. Not just girls.”
There's a third pairing Jesper and Wylan-while I like the idea of them, I wish they had more time together on this book for their relationship to become more fully fleshed out.
•Now let's not forget another kind of ship-the Friendship that is all abound in Six of Crows. My favourite is the lady friendship between Inej and Nina.
“I’m a very valuable investment.” “Tell me he didn’t say that.” “Of course he did. Well, not the valuable part.” “Idiot.” “How’s Matthias?” “Also an idiot."
The two girls are different, but I love how they instinctively understand one another.
Drawbacks
•The beginning was a little slow for me, pace-wise, but the story drew me in very quickly after that. •I constantly forgot that the characters were 15-17 year olds and so every time their ages were brought up, it took me by surprise. How can they have so much expertise at such a young age? That was absurd.
Here I'm ending my review(Or should I call it an essay?).With complex characters that will cause you a great deal of emotional trauma, a massive diverse world, and a suspenseful plot that will shock you over and over again, Six of Crows is a fantastic read for any fantasy fan. So if you haven’t picked up Six of Crows yet, I'll highly recommend you to do it....more

Heartbreaking and beautiful!
Titled like a monster book, the cover dark like a monster book,I expected some monsters and horror from A Monster Calls, but I most certainly didn't expect this..this explosive awesomeness! I did not expect this book to be this exceptional. The story is terrifying yet magnificent. Thanks to Rishabh for the super awesome reco!
Thirteen-year old Conor O’Malley is repeatedly haunted by the same nightmare and is visited by a monstrous talking yew tree at the precise time of 12:07 who tells him stories with unexpected twists and and eventually expects Conor to tell his own, but Conor’s truth is more terrifying to Conor than the monster itself. His mother who is undergoing chemotherapy seems to have no hope of recovery. Meanwhile,he faces trouble at school, resents his grandmother and has a distant relationship with his divorced father.
Patrick Ness's writing creates a beautiful depiction of grief. While this book is a middle-grade read, it could be life-changing even for adults. The story is heartbreaking and it teaches how to live again after the loss of a loved one. Although I knew the inevitable end to the book, the build up is so masterfully done that I couldn’t help but continue on despite the pain I knew will be at the end of the story.
The beautiful black and white drawings are so integral that the story wouldn’t be as effective without them.
This read was definitely an inspirational one and very moving. I loved how the author was able to capture so authentically, the conflicting and swirling emotions, that accompany the imminent death of a loved one. The book is a detailed snapshot of grief, of saying goodbye for the last time, of looking death in the eye and accepting the inevitable.
Here are some of my favourite quotes from the book :
"Your mind will believe comforting lies while also knowing the painful truths that make those lies necessary. And your mind will punish you for believing both."
"You do not write your life with words, the monster said. You write it with actions. What you think is not important. It is only important what you do."
"There is not always a good guy. Nor is there always a bad one. Most people are somewhere inbetween."
"Stories are the wildest things of all, the monster rumbled. Stories chase and bite and hunt."
"Stories don't always have happy endings."
Read the book. It will break your heart but you’ll feel better afterward, I promise :-))...more
Finally I've read a Sanderson book and I totally get the hype! It was very well wrActual rating : 4.5 stars
My reaction after ending the book -
[image]
Finally I've read a Sanderson book and I totally get the hype! It was very well written, provided so much action, offered a world full of depth and provided so many thought provoking moments of love, loss, life, and hope.
Highlights : - Unique and detailed magic system - The in-depth world building - Strong female main character
The beginning started off rather slow, but from the middle onwards, it was epic. The storyline is very complex – hence the size of the book. It sets the foundations for the other novels in the series explaining the world, the magic system, introducing all the characters and providing a very detailed plan to overthrow the empire.
I liked Sanderson’s writing. It’s pretty simplistic. There’s no need for flowery prose because well, the Final Empire isn’t really pretty. With the ash falls and the Mist grass is brown and for some reason the sun is blood red.Usually, it’s hard for me to picture how a character is moving and what they’re doing when a fight scene is happening, but not in Sanderson’s writing.
The characters are well developed and captivating. The book is mostly about a group of thieves and I loved every single person of this little group. It took me a while to warm to Vin, the protagonist. She seemed overly passive to me in the beginning, and Kelsier was most interesting to me. But as the story progresses, Vin’s character becomes more dominant and her development more interesting. At a certain point, I didn’t know what my favorite bit was anymore.
My only little complaint would be the romance. It started so abruptly that I really couldn’t feel the chemistry in this one. However I felt like there wasn’t a need for romance in this book anyway.
Obviously I can’t talk much about the ending without giving and spoilers, but the last 100 or so pages of the novel absolutely blew my mind. Highly recommend Mistborn if you haven’t read it yet!
Pre read review : Finally we're all aboard to start the BR with my sweet girl gang - Kajukatli, Choco pie and Roshogulla. Let's start the voyage, girls!! #IAmSooooExcited
