This book is the companion piece to the BBC TV series by the same name. (The author is the presenter of the show as well) Of course, the book is able to go into greater detail and more depth than the series, as well as additional topics not covered in the series. The series, however, is well worth watching as it illustrates quite nicely numerous aspects of the book that I had problems envisioning. (The series is segmented on YouTube)

It was one of the few books I've read in recent years that I genuinely did not want to put down.
Having just re-read (or, rather, listened to the audio version) I'm still impressed with Eoin Colfer's abundant imagination. His writing, on the other hand, seemed careless, overly explaining (i.e. telling instead of showing or, worse, telling -and- showing the same action in the same sentence) and not trusting his readers to get what he was trying to convey.
Still, this is an amazing, imaginative world that Colfer has created....more
