Even that felt boring. I don't know how there is enough here for a series... so I stopped reading about 1/3 of the way through....more

Purchased as an e-book deal during Pride month offerings as it has a great advertising team (beautiful cover and byline e.g.) and I trust some of the existing raves on Goodreads but this was actually fairly dull especially because I did not believe in the chemistry of the two ill-fated enemies-to-lovers(?) at the heart of it. I believed at least in the exploitative professor-protege relationship but that was also dull while somehow still overwrought in prose.
It's a Carmilla retelling in the mid 20th century at a women's university. shoulda checked a lot of boxes but alas!...more

But as a book, none of the stories feel fully fleshed out and they are missing the humor (even if dark) that the author is purported to have (by Brian Michael Bendis in the foreward and by one of the scenes with the same comic where he urges her to show her humor)
I honestly may have rated this higher if I had not been expecting humor or if I was prepared for more concise autobiography in the vein of Alison Bechdel. ...more

There was a lot to critique here - some obvious 'why are you DOING that!?" that further the plot or keeps the MC from a good life/home, some discomfort in the things that happen to a 16-yr old that are supposed to be ok because she doesn't mind/the guy doesn't know her real age + some dissonance in her growing up and (view spoiler)[getting pregnant (hide spoiler)] 3 years later which if you don't do the math seems somehow ok but once you do it you realize she's only 19 and while legal, some stuff is still icky. But I felt like the intentions were good and there is a lot you can forgive for someone who is a survivor of a horrible parenting upbringing where she essentially had only herself to rely on. And the ending wasn't crap so I'll take it. Also, despite some easy tropes the author could have followed - like our MC not having friends who are girls - she chose not to and there are some excellent female friendships in here that make the book pass a Bechdel test with flying colors....more

Marco is indeed gone (sob!) Picking up a few years later with a very mixed bag of found family, our intrepid survivors are smuggling and drug dealing to get by and their morals are far from squeaky clean. That being said, they’re still the most loveable, root-for-able cast of characters in a long time. I’m glad the crew is back - I look forward to seeing what the messaging is with this 2nd half, and I dread reading only issue by issue because it’s just never enough. ...more

AND due to the Chosen One's interference (by preventing any thinning of the herd/sustenance for the gauntlet in the meantime), said gauntlet is especially trim, hungry and perhaps desperate enough to throw away the patience to wait for the end of the year 'graduations.' If you were one of those 'I'm talented too!' persons sublimated to the shadows of Chosen One's radiance... and if you perhaps had been foretold as some ultimate evil Adversary (as much as you tried to be good!) well then maybe you too would consider murdering the Chosen One for the good of the rest of the student body (and your own survival!). Oh also, the magic school is a full-on house of horrors.
SO looking forward to the next in the series!! ...more
purchased for my daughter based on TOB-followers reminiscing online and finally read together when on vacation. This is exactly the kind of story I wopurchased for my daughter based on TOB-followers reminiscing online and finally read together when on vacation. This is exactly the kind of story I would have enjoyed as a kid - plucky princess defies societal expectations, fun dragons, annoying would-be rescuers and a decent story with just the right amount of detail. Hoping it kicks of a series read. ...more
