The audiMy dad originally gave me his copy of this book, which was from his college days at Cornell University, so that I could complete an audition. The audition went poorly, and the book ended up placed on a shelf for an extended period of time. It had to sit. When I picked it back up, I became entranced by the poetry, and how each word was written and formed, which words were chosen for his prose. Edgar Allan Poe, at least to me, was the first person to have perfected the 'whodunnit', not Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who stole the whodunnit from him. Poe's stories with Professor Dupin were by far my favorite parts of his short stories. When it came to poetry, however, my favorite was "A Dream Within A Dream" as that resonated the part of me which recognized his grievances. Nevertheless, this is by far one of the few writers who continuously wrote fantastic works....more

I don't think I've ever read a book that fast, or even found a book that resonated with the feeling of insanity so much. Everyone, I believe, is a little bit like Fight Club, not just the main character, but really. I remember it being freezing cold outside, and how I would be in heeled boots (because I'm insane, and walking around while reading a book in the freezing cold while wearing high-heeled boots should be a crime on some level). As I wasn't paying attention where I was going, being so engrossed in the book, I would find myself sliding around on icy patches, trying to catch myself. Inevitably, I would fall flat on my bum, tear a page or two, and read while on the ground because I was in the middle of a really good part. So, yes, this book is one of my favorites. Just the experiences I had while reading this book were one part hilarity, another part, "Professor, what exactly did this mean?" Because, yes, English classes are fun, especially when professors think there's symbolism everywhere (there usually isn't)....more

Of course, it was natural for me to try to figure out what would happen next. Once I realized the characters were growing, changing, becoming different people before I read, it was already too late, I had finished the novel. Fast-paced, psychotic, and with all the frills of women with antlers and the perfect amount of, 'huh?' this was definitely one of the best books I have ever read.
Also, the comic strip in the back of the book about the author was absolutely hilarious. Every author has a 'thing' that they do, whether it makes sense or not....more
