Sleeping Giants by SYLVAIN Neuvel is a Sci-Fi book. It was an easy read for me. The writing is easy to be understand, the plot is easy to followed, the multi-audiobook narrators have distinct voices to the characters. I think listening to the audiobook version is better than reading it.
The story is a giant robot were fallen apart and its parts scattered on Earth. We know the story pieces by pieces from the interviews with multi- interviewers who were connected with the giants at some points. The mysteries of the Giant were unraveled by the interviewing with the characters and the tensions America with the other countries since the discovery of the giant.

Radiance by Catherynne M Valente is a book uses science fiction settings of telling a fantasy story. I think this book could be categorized in Sci Fi Radiance by Catherynne M Valente is a book uses science fiction settings of telling a fantasy story. I think this book could be categorized in Sci Fi genres, even though it reads like a fantasy book. I am keen on Valente’s books, since I have read The Orphan’s Tales, I was immediately entranced in her writing and the story; the rich descriptions of the bizarre world, its cultures, customs and the religions, magic beings like fairies, magic animals etc. Those characters in the book seem eccentric but aren’t anomaly in the world where they live. I think Valente has the magic of crafting the outlandish world with unexplainable plots and characters to which are particularly apt to the world.
Radiance is a story about a crew of filmmakers, they had been making films on several planets. Their last The Radiant Car Thy Sparrows Drew was making while the girl Severin whose dad is the director of the film, was disappeared. The story is about her disappearing and reappearing on many planets. A detective took the job to look after her, other crew members told the story about her but they don’t know what happened to her and why she just disappeared.
There is also the main focus on the myths of callowhale and its milk. It seems that Callowhale’s milk is for the space travelers to travel though space. And the callowhale’s existence is strongly connected to the planet and the people who live on there.
There is one thing I do not quite understand, in some chapters, the phenomena static happens on some characters but It has no explanation of why it happened. The static seems is contagious to people aren’t from the original planet. One of the crew members showed the symptoms of static. But the static event had ended in the fire of the cinema.
This book has multitudes of layers on how you interpret the plots and the world. The structure of the story may be the most ambitious I have seen on Valente’s books so far. The chapters within chapters read like a script, radio record; the forms of the story are various and variable. The POVs jump to one another quite frequently, not too difficult to follow up the story but with some efforts to follow. There have a city on the ship, aliens and galactic space travels. It is not easy to comprehend the metaphors behind the stories like Valentine’s other books which there always have metaphors are hidden within the stories. Fortunately, Radiance proffers the Chronology which refers to the story lines. It gives readers the clues to follow up the story, and it would be difficult if you don’t pay attention on the dates and locations in the story.
Rating: 9 out of 10. It is perfect in some way to tell a story which is like Radiance. However, I think even the writing enable the descriptions to enhance world building; there still has some issues about the writing, and the structure of the story somehow is really difficult to catch up to what the story wants to show to readers....more

The title, Why Fish Don’t Exist is interesting, and this is why I read this book. This book is a biography of a scientist’s life, not the narrator’s biography. It reads like a story of opinions about eugenic, Darwin, and varieties of species. Provide readers a different perspective of Darwin’s theories of evolution. The story about the conservative of sciences, the wondrous of world, the connection humans with the other species etc; especially focus on eugenic that people misunderstand What Darwin’s evolutionary theories to the law of nature.
It is not a difficult read, a short nonfiction book which proffers readers a chance to understand our nature world. Not particularly enthralling read to me but a book which provides me a new perspective.

They play critical role of explaining the concepts of the story; it is interesting to see the concepts to be used in a horror novel. It reads like a revenge/ liberated story.
The story is okay, the concepts are interesting to see. Readers can see how this kind of experiment is being used by CIA.

Zothique has the most brooding vibe in the stories. Perhaps it has the most grotesque and horrendous descriptions about necromancy, exorcism, cannibal, torture scenes which I have seen in Smith’s books. Without a doubt, this book is the best Smith book I’ve read by him so far. It has grand world building, ornate descriptions of the world, evocative concepts, and fervently dream like experience. The Characters in Zothique they are the best characters which were written by smith. They feel more flesh to the stories aren’t just card board made. Even though they are the better part of the book but not the best part of the book. The best part of the book that definitely is the world building and writing; Smith’s poetic writing enhances the far future dying earth, vividly depict the inimical creatures and sorcerers. Characters are often against those malevolent forces, even the earth is no longer had any meanings of being existed, people still struggling to survive in the brutal environment.

It is a highly imaginative fantasy book, with Lovecraft esque monsters, gods or entities were living in a realism of a far north place. Some stories have very intriguing settings and concepts such as The Door to Santurn, The Coming of the White Worm, The Seven Geases. All the short stories and poems were selected in the book which they are high quality of writing. It is difficult not to notice his writing and the use of the words which portray the stupendous scenery as intricate tapestries to telling a bizarre and perilous world.
Unfortunately, the only problem I can see is that Smith’s characters are not quite matched to the grand world building and the settings. It’s a shame that such a stunning masterpiece lack of characterization even though the purpose of writing those short stories are intentionally not creating a believable character or the like in the stories, but I still hope the it would be better to see his characters in the book are not just a mere plot device.

But you still can find the histories of the world in the previous book happens to be the details in the detective investigations. I think this book is much better than The Justice of the King for sure, as Necromancy magic element in the book is the more obtrusive but not badly used in minor plot device. The story structure also is better than The Justice of King. Martha Wells don’t tell the story in Info dump way, she tell you by the characters when the plots need to be elaborated. Martha Wells is a better story tellers in the way of world building, plotting, but I think the characterization is not as good as her way of structuring story lines. Her characters have distinctive voices but with any enthusiasm that want to know what had happened to them. It is not like her popular series, Muredrbot that the robot is interesting enough to compel me to read thoroughly. The characters are the least interesting in the story, they seem to play the roles of following the detective story.
I am not sure to use old- fashioned in describing the world building and settings in The Death of the Necromancer is the correct word, but I feel that the settings and world building are not very innovative to me. Perhaps it is because it is just Wells’s third published fantasy book. I think I expected more from the world building and settings, not very cliche but not like a breath of fresh air to me.
The story is a story follows a bunch of criminals invading the mansion but found out they were being haunted by ghouls. Nicolas is the leader of the group want to find out who had been holding the sphere to use necromancy. At the meantime, he was still had his revenge for his frost father.
Personal Rating: 5.75 out of 10. I think I need to lower the rating of The Justice of King because the two books have the similar settings but I like The Death of Necromancer more to the settings. ...more

It has some horror elements in the book so that it could be considered as a horror book. It is a book about witch societies, witchcrafts, the underworld of women which control the surface world of the patriarchy. Something about the intuition of women is different which compares to men’s is interesting. The using of magic is not only the practices also the innate talent that males rarely have except male sorcerers. The first half of the book is all about the theories of superstitions, magic is to be consider as supernatural phenomenon and not a scientific way of explaining the fundament laws of cosmos. About how ceremonies of witchcrafts are defined as a blinding- believe to superstitions.
The story is quite simple, the professor, Norman whose wife was being a witch after they moved to the town. After Norman found out his wife had been using witchcrafts to protect Norman from jeopardies. As Norman is a believer of Sciences rather than magics, and thus he required his wife incinerate all the charms she had. However, things happened after her wife stopped using witchcrafts. Furthermore, her wife’s soul was hijacked by a powerful witch. Norman found out he must abandon the rational logics of sciences, start believing the art of witchcrafts. The ending has the plot twist to the story. I think nowadays many horror movies or book are using the plot twist.
It has some interesting themes, but the first half of the story is explaining the themes and slowly building out the secret withes societies. The motifs in the story is quite noticeable to predict the developments of the story.

I don’t read many crime books, this is my first crime b He died with his eyes open is a detective crime book, it is the first book of Factory series. I don’t read many crime books, this is my first crime book read in English. It’s not a difficult read for me, not as I am used to read in very descriptive writing of secondary worlds and multiple POVs. It is a story which follows the formula of detective solving crimes. Mostly, the book is built up by dialogues and the replay of the cassettes. There has some British humors in the dialogues, it is sharp to some extent. The book tends to use the dialects of London to present story background. Sometimes I feel it is a bit jarring to read, I think because I am not familiar with the London dialects.
The story is central on the cassettes of the dead. The police detective Staniland was unraveled the mystery of the dead, and his investigation with the suspects. The story is old fashion detective style, no advance techniques assist the investigations, no witnesses for him to interrogate, Just himself operating the investigation. Actually it is better than I expected, the writing and the story has some charms to lure me into reading further of the story.
Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City by K.J Parker is a historical fantasy book. It is more inclined to be on fantasy side than historical fiction. L Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City by K.J Parker is a historical fantasy book. It is more inclined to be on fantasy side than historical fiction. Like K.J Parker’s other fantasy books that doesn’t have magic, no dragons or Elves in the stories. The stories usually are full of stratagems, battle fields, economics, intrigues etc, those things are delicately used in the tightly plots in medieval-esque world. I think Parker is one of the prolific writers who has written more than 30 books and numerous novellas which are connected with some of the series.
I first knew K.J Parker, when I was looking for unique fantasy books to read; I found his fantasy books are low fantasy and using strategies to solve problems than brandishing magic swords to defeat enemies, then I took a peek on his novella, Blue and Gold. It was a satisfying read for me. The unreliable narrator and the sharp, wit dialogues totally serve the story. Even though I thought it is not a stunning read still I quite like it; then I read Purple and Black, The Folding Knife, The Company, The Last Wetness etc. those are excellent read for me. So far I have read 10 books by K.J Parker, Sixteen Ways to Defend the Walled City is my tenth K.J Parker book.
Interesting thing is that K.J Parker writes good stories but among English speaking countries, seldom readers know him. However, after K.J Parker was introduced in Chinese book markets, Chinese readers want K.J Parker books more than some popular fantasy series. It is one of the few English fantasy writers who was reckoned by Chinese readers. It is kind of ironic, because many popular fantasy books in English which don’t fit in fantasy book market in China. I am not a Chinese, I just coincidentally knew when I was surfing/ browsing the internet due to my curiosity of the fantasy books in English I am looking for. I understand why K.J Parker is popular or at least it has the business in Chinese book markets. Because K. J Parker writes books with knowledge, the story is witty in some sense and it is read like historical fiction. And most of all, it is about humans, how the characters solved problems when the situations were dire. It is about politicking and the it is maneuvering on battle fields. They want to know how a talent writer to write a story in medieval-esque setting with some plot twists and turns to the characters and the story.
K.J Parker’s books was one of the priorities to read. Then, I think I am content with that.
Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City is a story about Orhan who was an engineer, accidentally, he became the colonel of the City and preparing or the defense of the siege. Ironically, the leader of the enemy who was his best friend in Childhood Ogus. Soon it set him to ponder the situation of the siege and the relationship with him that would cost exorbitant price to pay.
I didn’t count is there actually have 16 ways to defend the walled city in the book. But it does mention that Orhan found a book which is about sieges. I am familiar with Parker’s fantasy books so that I know the narrator, Orhan is unreliable. It is not like he deliberately lie to you, instead he don’t know how to write down the story that is connected with his memories. Orhan use fake forages, engineering knowledge to save the city. He is just an engineer, and thus the note in the end questioning the authenticity of the story. K.J Parker prefers to write characters with unusual identities to dealing with the issues that they were confronting. The book could be read as a standalone. The world is also connected to the novella, Mightier than a Sword. I just read the novella earlier this year but I didn’t know it is in the same world of SWDWC. What a happenstance!
I think Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City is not the best of K.J Parker’s books to which Compares The Folding Knife and The Company. Personal Rating: 7.5 out of 10.

Rebecca is on of the famous gothic classic book. Most readers know it even though they may not read it. I think the audiobook version which I listened to has done a good job. The tone of the narrator serves the vibe of the story. Like other gothic novels, Rebecca inherit the predecessors of the gothic books, which is a haunting, atmospheric and a bit spooky when you are thinking the story. The writing is good enough to depict the Manderley the grandiose house with dark secrets. I think it is the most successful part of the story.
Rebecca starts with a seemingly romantic opening about a young girl was going to be married to a rich gentleman, but turned out, it is just the beginning of the suffering for the girl. If Rebecca just follows the romance formulas then it would not be the classic; it is about life, secrets and how the past would haunt you lifetime long. It is about growing up but in a bitter way. I quite appreciate that the author molding the disturbing experience of the characters into a gothic tale. Those characters who were connected with Rebecca, would be haunting forever in their memory.
I must say that I was a bit disappointed, because the characters and the story seem like the devices for discovering the facts of Rebecca before her death. their functions are just delivering messages to readers. The Half of the book became a crime fiction but it isn’t an exciting read for me. It seems that the author just wants to elaborate Rebecca’s last days before she died. The first half of the book is much stronger than the second half, if it doesn’t just develop the story into a crime story, then it would be potentially as good as the first half book. The crime story line lacks the depth of the story and it ruins the atmosphere of the haunting story for which the first half book creates.

I’ve read We Have Always LiThe Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson is a classic gothic book, and it is a famous one among classic gothic books. I’ve read We Have Always Lived in the Castle by the same author, this book is my second book by her. I think both books have strong gothic vibe to the story, it hardly separates gothic elements from the both books. I think The Haunting of Hill House has more horror elements than the other one; the book successfully create the anxious feeling to the story. It is not like being aghast by the horrific scenes or plots, it is more slowly driven readers to feel uncomfortable about what was going to happen to the characters. Especially Eleanor who was being hysterical near the end of the story.
The story is about Eleanor who got the invitation from Dr. Montage to visit the hill house, where the townspeople are afraid of. After she arrived at the hill house, she met her other companions who was going to stay at the hill house with her. In there, they will discover the dark secrets of the hill house and their past..
The story has the simple plot line, which is staying at the hill house and what happened there would change their life forever. It is simple but with subtle meanings in the story. Eleanor seemed to be scared at the hill house first but in the end things has changed. Dr. Montage didn’t believe the supernatural phenomenon in the hill house, but what he has been thorough which don’t have any scientific explanations. It is hard to pin down what happened to Eleanor, she had heard someone called her, her name was written on the wall, even she saw phantoms outside the hill house. Was she losing her mind because of the environment or is it some other factors? Her ending seems that she didn’t want to living the hill house, and went back to her apartment. Maybe it is the most horrible thing would happen to a character in a gothic book.

The Fisherman by John Langan is a Lovecraft-esque horror book. The unknown horror of the supernatural phenomenon about the fisherman, the sorrow of bereavement, fishing at a remote lake surrounding by nature; all mix in a Lovecraft vibe story. The story slowly progresses while following it. It is an atmospheric read for quiet time whenever it is in afternoon or night time. I think the atmosphere which the story creates is the most successful part of the book, perfectly fit in the slowly processing story. The frame of story seems like from the mythologies of Europes. If you like folklores or mythologies and legends, then you may be interested in The Fisherman.
This book is okay to me, although it is a bit long to read. The second part of the story immediately jump to the families which had discovered the myths about the fisherman that might put some readers off. On average, it is a okay story to me but I wanted more from the story.
Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang by Kate Wilhelm is a sci-Fi book set in a post apocalyptic world. The world was having unexplained catastrophe before Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang by Kate Wilhelm is a sci-Fi book set in a post apocalyptic world. The world was having unexplained catastrophe before most humans were extinct. The survivors in the story might not be considered as original humans instead they are post-humans. The book has won Hugo Award for Best novel in 1977. I think the concepts of Cloning to be post-humans after the catastrophe is compelling for me wanting to know what is the prospects or not prospects in the world where there is no real humans but clones occupying the world. If we humans can not survive by ourselves but using Cloning-technologies to duplicate the form of human life that in order to sustain the life cycle of humans. Is it against ethical principles or not? Our decisions may not be the results which we want from the clones, the story is based on the premise that the clones didn’t want to follow the rules by the scientists, they wanted to their own rules of reconstructing the future they desire.
The story is decided into three parts. First part is that a family had realized that the catastrophe had the potential to eliminate mankind, and thus the family built the hospital in the valley. There is isolated from the outside world, the world where was a closed to the edge of doom. The family members successfully proceeded the program of cloning. However, those clones were plotting to take over the cloning-tanks in the hospital, and banished David who has started the program.
The second part is there is still a nature birth baby after the clones took over the hospital and established the clones communities. The story is Molly the nature-birth was struggling with the differences between her and other clones, her creativities were considered as the heretic to the clone society. And the clones were considering the expansion outside the valley.
The third part of the story moves on to Molly’s nature birth son, Mark . He was staying with the clones for a while and the clones communities has decided that Mark must help them to the expedition of the eastern side of America like New York. Mark want to create a society as in the past time which individuals are still valued by the society not the threats to it. In the end of the story he escaped the hospital, with some women who are able to give birth to children, they have traversed the America to the place where Mark’s ideal society would exist.
The story focus on the concepts of what if the clones became the representatives of human’s future, how this future would be like? Group Consciousness become the prime goal in a society, individualism is not to be accepted in the group of people. Mostly, the story shows that the cons of the lack of individual consciousness.
I wondered that if it is a better society that humans still maintain the individual thinking ? If we lost it, it would be no creative works existing in the world. This setting of post-apocalyptic world, post humans world is an introspection of the world which is divisive. Although the setting already decides that the clones ruling the post-world without any biological humans. The characters David and Molly are the devises to demonstrate the settings as the story progresses, later on the storyline, they fades from the story. The story is not an exhilarating read or thought provoking, it has the simple story, and tells the story in a fluent writing. Not bad but It limit the potential developments of the story.
Personal Rating: 6.5 out of 10.
P.S: interesting thing is that the clones somehow their emotional are connected with each others, one got shock, a group of clones show the same feeling.

Stewart is a post apocalyptic Sci Fi book, the only Sci Fi book was written by the author. Earth Abides won the international fantasy award in 1951, It has inspired Stephen King’s The Stand. The book is toward to literature side than science fiction side; Earth Abides indeed has some Sci Fi elements but those elements are just the concretes of the background story . Base on the background which the known societies were crumbled, then the new form of societies raised; the survivors were trying to survive in the new world with few remained populations. Those remained populations were scattered in America and became the tribes. The whole story is focused on America, other countries are just mentioned without knowing what had happened to them after the epidemic.
Our character Ish is an anthropologist who was one of the survivors after the epidemic. The virus disaster almost has wiped out all the populations on earth. It is a story about Ish was surviving in the Changing world and he wanted to let the knowledge of humane to be preserved after he die.
The story’s perspectives are nature would eliminate the abundant popularities of species, which is kind of a system. New generation would be adapted to the new environment, and without using the old world’s technologies or knowledge.
The story read like watching Discovery channel about how people survive after post apocalypse, so that the story did not awe me while I read it. The writing is good and fluent that is beautifully portrayed the post holocaust world. Even though in the middle of the story just concentrates on the slice of Ish family’s life, it would be a bit drag off the pacing.
I think the story made me think that if the world became without magnitudes of people, then it may be a potential paradise to the survivors. We can build a new societies, establish new laws etc. unfortunately, the story tells us that it still faced the brutal fact that the idealism doesn’t work at all in the circumstances. People just trying to survive and preserve the better lands to the next generations. But maybe, it still has the chance to reshape the world in harmony societies.

A bThe Iron Heel is Jack London’s dystopia science fiction. This is his less well-known book that compares with The Call of the wild and White Fangs. A book is about the crisis of middle class and the revolution of Proletariats, The persecution of Plutocracy. It reads like a historical fiction with several references to the real events. The general strike, the suppression of the publications, propagandas and secret agents/spy among middle and proletariats etc. Those enhance the vibe of revolution to the story. I think it is a book needs to do some home work about America history in about early 1900 century before reading it. The story is very real at some point that the Industrial Revolution has caused the exploitation of Proletariats. Plutocracy had the iron fist on the society.
Ernest is a socialist who indicate that the Society was being controlled by the Plutocracies. The redundant surplus is one of the main reason why the profits was still hold by the high caste. The whole story is a revelation of the Proletariats has operated the revolution but failed to achieve the accomplishment.
I think it is an interesting book but the plots just are about the themes of the uprising of proletariats against of the Iron Heel. If you want to read a dystopia Sci Fi, The Iron Heel might not be what you expect. It does have some Sci Fi elements but read like a lecture than a story. Not bad but require concentration on the themes and the fictional history.

Light by M. John Harrison is an extraordinary outlandish Sci Fi book in a good way. The story is elliptical to understand what is going on in the story, it is hardly to understand what All three narrators had experienced in the story. Due to the lack of the explanations of the background story and thus I barely knew the full picture of the tale. I think it was written in a very deliberate way of not telling the details to readers. I think mostly New Wave writers have the tendency to do so in their books. It would be extremely challenging to readers to read through the whole book. Especially, this book is harder than PKD’s Sci Fi books I read this year. Piecing the scatter pieces of the puzzle was the daunting task while I was reading it. Although it indeed is a profoundly rewarding read to me, even though I still don’t fully comprehend the whole story after finished it.
The story start at the scenario of the conversation of the scientist with someone or something. After that, the three narrator carry on telling their stories of encounter the unknown entity. It is a horrific and befuddling experience to them as they didn’t know what the identity and the motivations of the entity toward to them. The serial killer, Kearny had a miserable childhood, later he became a physicist and a serial killer who specifically hunting down women, but also escaping from the alien like creature shrender.
Seria Mau had been chosen to be integrated with the K-Ship, the K-ship she named it White Cat. She once has saved the man who know the secret that in far away corner of Galaxy, there has a planet which has bunches of alien technologies. However this secret was the bait to lure Uncle- Zip to discover the location of the planet…
Ed is a visionary, he had been living in the futuristic world for a while. During that time, he had killed many people and finding shelter to hide from his enemies. But he doesn’t know that his identity would be crucial for the entity.
The three parts of the narrators which Ed is the most difficult part to be understood. The first half of the story doesn’t reveal Ed was a visionary till near the end of the story. The places he had been staying are not all the located in the real world. He was one of the alter-gene human who was created by the powerful alien entities. Ed is the person they were looking for.
Kearny’s story is the explanation of the theories in the book which are related to Shrender. His story has some subtle meaning beneath the surface of the story, metaphorical or symbolical.
Seria Mau’s story I think is the extension of traveling in the space with the highly advance space ships ; alien planets, techs and so on. Her story includes telling the background of space traveling, wormhole and the by using consciousness to communicating with the space ship. Also her story is related to the Alien entity.
The story is too complicated to efficiently read through between pages to pages. I don’t think the three narrators are perfectly connected to the story. Sometimes I feel it is a bit jarring to read but it is understandable because the story is very unique and is written in the opaque contexts to read. A difficult read for sure but if you want a very unique Sci Fi story that this is definitely the one you are looking for.
