I can't count the number of times I said, "Can I read you this passage out loud?" to my husband, after audibly giggling (several times on an airplane). The undercurrents of pain, and painful self reflection, took my breath away at times, but these revelations were so masterfully wrapped into the storytelling and humor that I enthusiastically kept reading. "Calypso" shines a light on the way we (as a culture, as a species) tell ourselves a story of family. Sometimes we embellish. Sometimes we outright lie to ourselves. But at the end of the day, in our quiet minds, we inevitably return to the truths of who and what we have chosen to value....more
