While I completely understand the people who say it is juvenile or over the top, it was exactly what I was looking for. I didn’t go in expecting a life changing, fact-based sci fi. I wanted a fun, character driven space opera, and BOY did I receive.
I know a lot of people went into this one expecting something like the Illuminae files, but it is not set out in the iconic dossier format. Despite disappointing many people because of that, to me it felt very similar to the original trilogy without being a carbon copy.
I am always up for a group of misfits, and I love the interesting dynamics that comes with it. The characters were the main highlight for me, and I can’t wait to read more about them in the next books!
➽ Finian- The Gearhead Perfect comic relief in stressful/awkward moments. His sarcasm and quippy one liners had me laughing out loud. Finian was open about being attracted to all genders, and I really apreciated how this book took a traditionally conservative genre, and made it more diverse!
➽Kal- The Tank My unapologetic favourite of the group. I mean, come on. Look at the cover of ‘Aurora Rising’ and tell me he is not the hottest ‘lil space elf you have ever seen. He is the sweetest misunderstood and angsty soldier trying to work out his feelings for another character. AHHH MY HEART
“But they have not seen their sun die. Their people burn. Their world end. And they do not know, yet, that there are some breaks that cannot be fixed.”
➽Zila- The Brain The trigger happy, socially inapt, basically a computer one.
➽Scarlett- The Face I loved her SO MUCH! She was the diplomat of the group, which suited her personality perfectly. She knows languages, customs and niceties from all over the galaxy- and uses them to her advantage. She is unquestionably loyal to her brother, but isn’t afraid to let him know her opinion.
"Who wants to be normal when you can be interesting instead?"
➽Cat- The Ace I wasn’t really a fan of Cat in the beginning but she grew (no pun intended) on me as the book went along
➽Tyler- The Alpha “I cannot help but feel a grudging respect also. He thinks swiftly, this Tyler Jones. He does not rattle, and he does not hesitate. With everything on the line, he still sees clearly, and he does what it takes to win. He is a born leader.”
But I do know you and I swore an oath when we joined the Legion. To help the helpless. To defend the defenseless. And even though the ―”
“Um, sir?” Finian de Seel says. “We might have a problem.”
“You mean aside from you interrupting my speech?” Tyler Jones asks. “Because I’d been practicing it in my head for an hour and it was gonna be great.”
➽Aurora This cute little 'son of a biscuit'-ing one woke up after two centuries in cryosleep to no family, no friends and no idea what happened to them. She was relatable and helped us to learn more about the world. "I think I'd like to be unconscious again, please."
I loved the exploration of religion in an age with aliens and space travel. It did not escape anyone’s attention that despite the huge range of possibility for life to appear in, most species are carbon based, and largely humanoid. This led to the beginning of a new religion, which I look forward to learning more about.
“A lot of those stars actually died millions of years ago. It’s just they’re so far away, the light they created before they died hasn’t finished reaching us yet.” He waves at the galaxy beyond the glass. “You’re looking at a sky full of ghosts.”
I still prefer the Illuminae Files, but that doesn’t take away from my enjoyment of this one! I can’t wait for the next book, Aurora Burning in particular (ok ok fine it's mostly the cover- but still!)...more
