This book follows a former K-9 officer going through difficult personal, professional, and physical challenges, and all while investigating another officer’s death. It was easy to become invested in the mystery of the case, along with Maddie’s struggles and to root for her to overcome so many things that would have taken most people down. This also an excellent book for dog lovers, as the K-9 component in this book plays an integral role throughout. I was left wanting to read the next in series to see where Maddie’s life takes her next. ...more

While brutal and, at times, difficult to read, this is a well-written and fascinating account of the invaluable assistance provided by the ISU to police departments and prosecutors offices all over the U.S. The details of many infamous serial cases and how the perpetrator was brought to justice is described in an easy-to-read fashion. As an aspiring thriller/murder-mystery author, I found this book to be invaluable. As a former federal law enforcement officer, I salute what the author, John Douglas, and his colleagues accomplished and the toll it takes on their personal lives. As a reader, I think anyone who loves true crime will also find this book a worthy read....more

For this book, I took a really deep dive into conflict and emotional wounds that drive characters to do what they do, make the decisions they make, and I think it added so many layers to the story. That’s why I think this is one of the best books I’ve written. There’s so much juicy angst and meat to Jamie’s and Bella’s fears, hopes and dreams, and especially, their character arcs.
It's been a wild ride, and writing the last Fed K-9 is bittersweet. I worked hard to make this story worthy of a finale. I hope you enjoy Above 'N' Beyond!

The paranormal aspect of the story centers around unusual mental and physical connections between people destined to be together. Hard not to love that kinda plot. The prose and emotional descriptions are off the charts. This story is dark and yet enlightening, as we follow a hero and heroine struggling to find meaning and light in their lives. This is, I believe, the third book in the series. Now I need to go back and read the first and second ones!...more

This book is copyrighted 2005, and you may recall this was (I believe) one of the very first true romantic suspense movies to air on the Hallmark Channel. Since then, that channel seems to have abandoned that genre in favor of romantic comedies and cozy mysteries. This is a huge book, around 640 pages and takes place over a period of about 5 months, which I appreciated for the realism. The hero, Chief Nate Burke, has classic inner demons to conquer and which collide with the heroine's family backstory. As for the romance, it's a slow but realistic burn. Action does not prevail on every other page, but the mystery of who killed The Ice Man is a constant thread that kept me turning the page. Nora Roberts also does an amazing job of describing the beautiful scenery of Lunacy, Alaska and the colorful characters who inhabit the town....more

The thing I liked best is that the story has one of the freshest concepts for a "meet-cute" that I've read in ages, something difficult to come up with these days. And wow, what a conflict between the H&H! I believe this is the first of a 50-Shades-type of trilogy, with the story leaving you wanting to pick up the next book to find out what happens. I'm definitely curious about the hero's backstory and his mysterious stint in the military....more
