I had to ask my friend if it gets better later, because I almost put the book away. Thank god for good friends that force you continue the books, because she was right, it really got better. That better that I read last cca 200 pages in one sitting and ended up being up until 2 a.m. And I regret nothing, because it was one hell of an ending.
I loved looking up pictures of Yale online during reading, all those old places, tombs and secret societies were just captivating. And this ghost story/murder mystery/dangerous magic story was very masterfully written. The main heroine Alex was a bit hard to love, but there were other characters I fell in love immediately and effortlessly. I can't wait to see where the story will go next. ...more

It is a collection of short stories, but it is impossible to read them at once. After every story, I just had to close the book and search my thoughts and feelings. And google what other people thought of it.
The writing is gorgeous and spellbinding, it sucks you right in. At the beginning it looks like ordinary story, but then small details start to emerge that make your skin prickle and you know that this will be everything but ordinary.
Some stories made huge impact on me, especially The Husband Stich, Real Women Have Bodies and Eight Bites. There were stories I didn't understand even after I googled thoughts of others. I think that it was just not the time for me to enjoy them yet. But it will come.
Overall, this book was completely different of what I normally read, and I am really glad it got to me. I think it's time to read more out of my comfort zone....more

The author created such an incredible atmosphere, you could almost feel the cold winter and hear the woods, see the trees moving and whispering. The language was very beautiful and mature, considering it is YA.
It wasn't a love at the first sight, but I got there at the end. What bothered me first was that it was a bit slow plot-wise and there was this instalove I didn't understand until the final chapters of the book. Halfway through, I thought I won't finish it, but I am so glad I did, because I really loved how it ended, it touched all the right strings in my heart.
So if you are looking for something atmospheric, slow, beautifully written with amazing finish, this is a book for you....more
In The Mercies, Kiran Milwood Hargrave created such a beautiful and painful story set during a witch hunt period in Norway, that wonderfully captured In The Mercies, Kiran Milwood Hargrave created such a beautiful and painful story set during a witch hunt period in Norway, that wonderfully captured the best and the worst in people.
One day, a horrible storm came to the shores of Vardø and killed most of the village's able men. Only women, children, the elderly, and a priest stayed. After the initial shock, the village's life had to go on, so the women took matters into their own hands. Not everybody was happy about it, not every woman agreed. Women and fishing? What a blasphemy that is! Words started to go around and decision was made: order must be made with these unholy women!
This is a story of human nature. Of neighbours being jealous of neighbours. Of the atrocities which were made on women and the northern clans connected to nature. This book will make you angry. Angry at the people, at the system, at history.
But most importantly, this is the story of the women. Of these brave, amazing women, who to prevent the starvation of their own people went and took care of the village. And at its heart, it's the story of two women, Maren and Ursa. Maren, living her whole life in the harsh conditions of Vardø, and Ursa, who grew up in a warm house with servants and suddenly was thrown to the marriage she didn't want and was taken to this cold island in the middle of nowhere. Their friendship moved mountains.
The book started a bit slowly, but I am so incredibly happy that I stayed with it, because a few chapters later, I was so deeply in, that suddenly all the other things were shaded by this story. Kiran's writing became spellbinding and life on Vardø became everything I could think about.
I highly recommend this book, it's one of the best I've read in a while. ...more

It was beautifully written book, full of feelings and emotions. It was impossible to put down and I was so sorry when I had to go to sleep. It also made me think about my life and all the places I've cried in public (I counted at least 5). It was great book and now I have to go and read Holly's other books, because I have a feeling she will become my new favourite....more

This book made my historical fiction, feminism and women rights movement loving heart so happy. The fact that it had brooding duke and fierce independent woman falling in love was just the cherry on top.
It was nicely written book with lovely characters, interesting plot and a lot of Mr. Darcy-Elizabeth vibes. I am relative newbie in a romance world, but in my humble opinion, I think this part was done perfectly. It had enough romance plot, but not too much, so I could also enjoy other aspects of the book, as suffragettes movement and the moments when first women were allowed to attend Oxford University. ...more

At the beginning of the book, I had this problem. It took me a really long time to get into the author's writing style. I loved the story from the first pages, I really wanted to continue reading and see what is going to happen next, but I found myself reading the same sentence or paragraph over and over, because I wasn't able to focus.
English is my second language and I usually don't have any problems with reading, but sometimes when the language is too complicated or sophisticated, this happens. So I switched to audiobook and the problem got fixed :) And I am so glad I did, because this is a story you don't want to miss.
It was so good! I loved the characters, their snarling and snickering, constant sarcasm and the bits and pieces of something deeper showing through their thick facades. And the ending of this story, OMG, I almost didn't breathe. It was amazing and I can't wait to read the next book. (Have you seen THAT cover?). ...more

This book gave voice to generations of oppressed women. It told the story and it got the message out.
Reading this book was wonderful, spellbinding experience. It was about sisters, mothers, lovers, and queers. About the bad apples, misbehaving girls and women and how the society dealt with them. About the abuse, cruelty, and discrimination. It was deep, funny, chilling and made me angry. Made me feel so much.
I cried at the end. This book touched me somewhere deep inside and moved mountains there....more
