It gives an idea of what Thrawn was up to with the Hand of Thrawn and why he returned to the Empire.
Thrawn is actually portrayed as a good guy in this story similar to some of the newer novels that came out recently. The only problem I had with this story is that his ability to read people through art was a little overstretched and was made less credible....more
I liked the general story. However, I don't appreciate all the intricate gory details of every disgusting thing that happens to the characters. I knowI liked the general story. I liked the way we learn what is going on at the same pace as the main character. Therefore, I won't spoil this book with a too-detailed review.

The gist of the story is that a man is the lone survivor of a mission to save Earth from a severe mass extinction event. He wakes up from a coma on a ship in another start system. He knows nothing about the mission or even basics about himself. Slowly he remembers what he needs to know to get his work done. He also meets an alien in the exact same situation and they end up working together.
This book has a lot of hard science from across all disciplines. If you are a science geek like me, you will love it. Even if you are weak in a discipline, the character will explain what he is doing in a way that doesn't make you feel stupid. I like the realism. Even the alien is much more realistic and probable than what you see in most sci-fi.
The ending was upbeat, though not totally conclusive. I don't like "open" endings, but I think this one is not too bad. I just hope the main character sent information about the fate of himself and his colleagues in the notes he sent back to Earth in the "Beatles." I doubt this book will have a sequel. However, I know it will have a movie and I would watch it.

I would give this a 3.5 actually because I find the characters very loveable.
I would say this is the weakest of all the books so far. One of the thingI would give this a 3.5 actually because I find the characters very loveable.
I would say this is the weakest of all the books so far. One of the things I love about this series is the story that goes on with or between the characters. Usually, the personal stories become intertwined or relate to the mysteries the agency is tasked to solve.
However, this time there were long stretches of soliloquy that was only weakly attached to the rest of the story. I felt the mysteries and problems were also only weakly touched on. Plus, you had the almost near-complete absence of some interesting recurring characters like Charlie and Mma. Ramotswe's adopted children.
But, the setting is interesting and you still get a slice of the main character's life, so it's worth reading for fun....more
