Civiliation by Laurent Binet is a well-researched and thought-provoking work that explores an alternative history where the Vikings reached and armed the Aztec and Inca empires, preventing the European domination of the Americas. While Binet's consistent and detailed exploration of this counter-factual scenario is impressive, the book's message ultimately rests on a single assumption. The extensive third part, written in a chronical style, can become tiresome at times, but the book remains an amusing and refreshing experiment in historical perspective, even if it does not significantly alter our understanding of how history unfolded....more

It resembles a contemporary interpretation of "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," featuring Jim, a runaway slave, as the central narrator. However, I must caution that it delves into challenging themes. It confronts the harsh realities of racial discrimination, portraying disturbing incidents of violence, including murder and rape, inflicted upon Jim solely because of his race. Despite my previous exposure to literature on slavery, this narrative profoundly underscored the brutality of the institution. I anticipate that certain individuals may seek to challenge this book's presence due to discomfort with its unflinching portrayal of historical injustices....more
This story is about people who take the same train to work everyday, helping each other out even though they don't know each other.Actual Rating : 4.5
This story is about people who take the same train to work everyday, helping each other out even though they don't know each other. At first it takes some time to get to know the characters, but then you meet people you start to like, especially this fun lady named Iona. I really enjoyed reading this book. I need an Iona in my life!
The book deals with some sad topics like mental health problems. But overall, it makes you feel better after reading it. It shows how strangers can be nice to each other and become friends. Stories that leave you with a warm, fuzzy feeling inside, like A Man Called Ove, would also like this feel-good book about the good people can do for each other without even trying.

IAlthough I had read about the Vietnam War in many resources, this book opened a whole new window into the horrors and injustices of this war for me. It detailed the innocent people killed in Vietnam and the men and women who risked and lost their lives in an unjust war. It described how the US used chemicals that harmed not only Vietnamese people but US soldiers as well. The women nurses in particular were ignored even after the war ended. I am adding some facts I got from my research on this topic.
Approximately 11,000 women served as nurses in Vietnam, playing a vital role in providing medical care to injured soldiers. However, despite facing dangerous conditions with limited resources, the contributions of these women nurses were often ignored or downplayed when the war ended. Nurses did not receive the same recognition or "welcome home" that male combat veterans received when returning from Vietnam. There was little public appreciation for the vital medical roles’ nurses played during the war. It wasn't until the late 1980s/early 1990s that Vietnam nurse veterans started receiving more recognition for their service, such as the Vietnam Women's Memorial in Washington D.C. which was dedicated in 1993. ...more

Beartown is one of the best contemporary books I've ever read, and Fredrik Backman is one of my favorite authors. I don't think anyone else can write about society, people's emotions, and relationships with such transparency and skill. His characters are ordinary people in normal situations, and they could easily be any one of us. However, when things happen, people will realize that they're not as moral as they think they are. Reading his books is a great way to reflect on some of our society's values.
Having said all that, I now feel like Beartown should have remained a stand-alone book instead of becoming a trilogy, especially with this last book being a bit of a stretch compared to the previous two. If you read it again as a stand-alone book, it's perfect. I don't think Backman is capable of writing a bad book, but I see this continuous story of Beartown as somewhat redundant....more

While it may have similarities to Elena Ferrante's works, it stands out in its unique way of highlighting the complexities of family dynamics and the emotional challenges that arise from making decisions that may not align with those of your loved ones.
Although the first half of the book is slow-paced, the second half is a powerful emotional journey that explores themes such as depression, love, and support. Napolitano's skillful crafting of each chapter by character and year allows readers to follow the progression of the story with ease.
I cried and I also laughed with the characters. "Hello Beautiful" is a beautifully written novel that will surely leave a lasting impression....more
