The authors bitterness toward religious people disgusted me . She went out of her way to add in a religious "fanatic " , who had no real impact on the plot . Before the protagonist even finds out that he's a fanatic she immediately acts as if freezing is preferable to taking shelter in a church. At nauseum were reminded that she doesn't believe in God , and that she finds religious people to be foolish and thinks herself better than them. The author then spews venom instantly over an old man who questions how a group of 3 ethinaclly diverse people are related ( none of them are actually related ) , calling him a racist old man . The characters become almost unrecognizable in these scenes. The characters instantly patronize him and display so much ingratitude that I had second hand embarrassment reading this. This is YA, if you'd like to write ( whine ) about how much you hate a God you don't believe in write about that in a separate novel. ...more
