Gume weaves another fantastic story in verse with The Brujos of Borderland High. We have a high school boy who has just dealt with a major breakup. He is unsure of himself and his magic. This book was MESSY. Lou and Jackie were the only ones who weren’t awful. I know that being a college kid you are dumb and make a lot of bad decisions, but this was a pretty wild friend group. I don’t blame Jackie for saying she was done and was not looking bad after her last semester got ruined. I feel we’ve all learned lessons the hard way and can relate a little to this but it still felt very extra. I also felt like I was missing some story from the beginning. We are dropped on his group of friends and it feels like we missed something from their story.
The art is great and I really enjoyed all the colors. I feel like I have to get better vibe from this creator. Thank you again Oni Press! ...more

This was such a cute and thought provoking graphic novel. We get a touch on toxic masculinity and as well being yourself. Marcus and Izzy’s back and forth have me whiplash but I can understand how they are feeling. They are in middle school and that is peak time for you to be unsure of yourself and of your friends. I’m glad Marcus was able to figure things out in the end. Izzy was adorable and I’m not sure why everyone didn’t want to be her friend. Even though they had some hiccups in their friendship, I have a feeling that they will take it with them to high school. Ted was the literal worst and he mirrored all the bullies I knew in middle school as well. Why do they all seem the same?
The ending at the talent show was so sweet I was grinning from ear to ear. I’d love to read more graphic novels by this creator!...more

4 friends enter Dominic House. 3 leave that night. Riley and his friends have never been the same since. Dealing with mental and physical scars, Riley vows to never enter Dominic House again. That is, until a famous ghost hunting show recruits them 2 years later to help them solve the mystery once and for all. Is Dominic house really haunted? And what happened to Riley’s boyfriend Ethan? This story goes back and forth from chapter to chapter and explains in the past and present what actually happened in Dominic House.
The “finding a friend who disappeared in a haunted house” trope is so vast right now and I’m loving all the books that come out of it. In the beginning it was hard for me to connect with the characters. Riley and Colton both seemed like mega jerks but of course they were the ones who suffered the most in the house. They would be the ones the most bitter about going back. I didn’t like Colton at all until the end. He at least got character development. Ethan seemed like such a sweet boyfriend to Riley and I was heartbroken when he was taken. I would want to go save him no matter what too.
The end seemed rushed but I was still happy with the outcome. I went into this book pretty blind and I was disappointed with the outcome. The end had me smiling so hard my face hurt. This was also a super fast read I was able to get through in a few hours so the plot moves forward very quickly. The main story is only told in a few hours with the flashbacks to the past going over one night. ...more

I love a good Knives Out comparison book. They will all be my downfall. I’m also all in for a good magical murder mystery. Neither the cover nor the description on Goodreads gives too much away so you’re left pretty much blind going in.
While the beginning was slower, it really picked up. The 4th part was amazing. I was on the edge of my seat reading and anticipating the next move. There were times I wasn’t sure about everyone’s motives and the obvious bad guys and red herrings were done in a way where you aren’t too sure who’s at fault. You feel bad for Ruby and Wren and want them to survive this wacky situation they’ve gotten themselves into. The romance in this seemed really random and put there just to make relationships, but you can’t have everything be perfect. I mean they only knew these people for 3 days.
This was a solid book with plenty of action and suspense to keep me invested. I actually enjoyed it way more than I thought I would....more

The cover for this is absolutely beautiful. The promise of sapphic academic rivals to lovers made me want to read this right away. Unfortunately, most of it didn’t hit for me. Honestly Lorelei was so frustrating 95% of the book. She is so emotionally closed off and self sabotaging you want to shake her. I understand why she acts the way she does a little. The way everyone treated her made my blood boiI. I also hated everyone except for Sylvia and Ludwig. I especially hated Johann. He was so openly racist and cruel. I do not know how anyone was “friends” with him.
I got a bit confused on the roles of this fantasy world after chapter 4. I wasn’t sure who everyone was and what their points were. After a while it got easier to read but it was still a little confusing. I enjoyed the magical creatures in this world. It was interesting to see how they interacted with them.
The romance here was strange. I didn’t really see big chemistry with Lorelei and Sylvia. A few people said it didn’t seem believable and I saw that a bit. The ending was super cute though even though I didn’t understand why she disappeared? Was I missing something?
I do enjoy this author’s writing but maybe this just wasn’t the book for me....more

Be prepared for my long review.
Old Wounds opens up and shows you its guts right away. What if the person you loved most in the world shunned you for years and then randomly asked you to run away with them? What makes a real trans experience? What does it mean to “fight” for it? What makes a “female sacrifice”? in a trans dynamic? Are monsters transphobic? Would Mothman care about what you were assigned at birth?
My heart was racing for Max and Erin. I didn’t know where the book would go but it showed so many different sides of what it means to be a man and a woman. I was able to be in the shoes of these characters and it was beautiful, raw, and unflinching.
Max is jealous. Erin is concerned. They are going on this big trip together to be able to be queer in California instead of their bigoted small hometown. Max is unable to be himself anywhere else. They both love and hate each other for reasons the other doesn’t know. They put on a mask of indifference for their end goal until there’s a literal hole in their plans the size of nails in their tire.
The horror elements here go a few different ways. The real life horror of being a trans youth in America today. Seeing people like you on the news that are dead named/misgendered and treated like just another tragic story. The tales of people like Brandon Teena who are assaulted and murdered for “lying” and told that they deserved it. We have that mixed in with actually small town hicks trying to sacrifice girls to a monster in the woods.
I don’t want to spoil this book because it’s so good, but I will say it’s an eye opening read with plenty of blood and horror and real like issues mixed in. I loved it so much and I’ll be hyping it up so much as it comes out in September....more

I knew from reading the synopsis this was going to be a 5 star read. It had everything I love. When I finished, I was so glad I was right. This is such a charming and heartwarming book. I was surprised how funny it was as well.
Ezra was a complicated character, and I went back and forth on him. I could understand his motivations and there was so much going on in his life I couldn’t blame him 100% but also Jonathan was like the sweetest and nicest person ever and he kept threatening to screw it up.
There was so much rich Jewish customs and traditions that I had to look so many things up. I learned a lot and I appreciated learning about Jewish practices for the dead because I didn’t even know what other religions did really. It was such a refreshing read. Also learning about the holidays they had was a lot of fun. Ezra’s family was so MESSY and I loved seeing the drama honestly. But he was also so amazing to his siblings. Middle child syndrome was strong but Ezra was the rock keeping them together. The found family here was also amazing because Ollie and his friends were such gems. They didn’t hesitate to listen and help Ezra and I love to see it. Also I loved Sappho she was so cute!
There’s so much here about death and life. About being loved and giving love in return. Ghosts are full of regrets but you can still grieve and find peace in others. This was so tender and full of love and I appreciated this read a lot....more

It was really hard for me to read the book for some reason, but I still enjoyed what I could see of the art. Idk if it was me or the download but the pages were a little blurry. I was still able to get most of the story.
This is my second Jennifer Dugan graphic novel and I’m definitely a fan. Coven was great and this one is up there too. In the beginning, I wasn’t sure what I thought of Tessa. She got a bit annoying in the way that she treated people, but I can see where she comes from. Her need to belong and fit in mirrors my own at times. Maddie seemed ready to do anything for Tessa even though she really didn’t deserve it, so you have to give it to her for being a good person and a good friend.
The pack seemed so fun and I loved them. Having a big family to do stuff with seems both annoying and exciting. Even though she didn’t see it at first, I’m had they were there for her when she needed them. Mack turned out to be a great leader and father figure and even Kylie seemed like a great sister after the beginning. I teared up near the end.
The only thing I wish was we could have seen more monsters since they were mentioned. It would have been cool!...more

This was probably one of the fastest moving books I’ve ever read. It’s a quick read that packed a punch. I really enjoyed this premise, but I always sit back and think “if there was something that could make me a zombie if I drank the water in my town, I would just leave.” Like why are people staying?
We unfortunately don’t get a big look at the friendship between Ian and Eric since everything happens so fast. I was expecting some character building to happen first but nope! Like I said it moves super fast. The side characters were interesting even if we don’t really see much of them either.
I also LOVED the disability rep. Ian gets seizures and feels like a burden to his family and best friend Eric. He feels second to Monica, who is pretty and seems like she has it all together even though she walks with a cane. Them teaming up together was so sweet. Angel telling them they are allowed to be selfish and take up space and act human even though they are disabled got me in my feels.
This is such an interesting twist on the zombie genre and I had a fun time reading it. I actually thought it was going to make me cry a few times. A good debut for sure!...more

Eli and Tate were awesome and the friendships with everyone was so refreshing. I also love to see books where everyone is accepting. Tate coming out to their friends & parents about being nonbinary was inspiring. Also the lessons about being under pressure and enjoying what you love instead of trying to be the best and hating it. People of all ages can learn from that lesson. This was great and I’m looking forward more from this artist!! ...more

I love a good ghost story, even if I cry like a baby during it.
After escaping death as a child, Dorian is given the gift of Sight. He’s able to see ghosts and uses his ability to act as a therapist and help them move on to the other side. After the key to death’s door is stolen by a ghost child, Dorian does everyone in his power to return it so the ghosts can move on to the other side.
The romance in this was so cute. Brody was so sweet and while my thoughts went back and forth with him, he was a great companion for Dorian. There’s a lot of heavy topics here about grief and moving on. Accepting what has happened and how to go from there. Dorian and his Gran were adorable too. I really enjoyed this one and the art is beautiful.

Should I be surprised I loved this book? No. I’m for sure a fan of tragic outdoorsy horror love stories. Was I crying at the end? Yes. I should have known it would happen. This story ripped my heart out at the end.
I loved the trio so much. Even though they were there for mixed reasons, Peter and James still really seemed to love Wyatt and care about her. She was the one keeping them all together.
The claustrophobic darkness you feel through the book is beautiful and the feel of nature fighting back against you is always fun to read. I really enjoyed seeing Wyatt understand her powers and understand who she was. Peter was my favorite but James grew on me the more we knew about him. I also realized as I was writing my review that Delaney and Colton are from her last book. As I was thinking that it seemed like we didn’t know that much about them and they were dropped into the story, it all made sense. I’ll have to read that one to understand more I guess!

I am a F.T. Lukens stan. Nothing but hits for 4 books. I live for everything they put out. I was super psyched when this book got announced and it lived up to the hype in my head. First, the cover is perfect. Beautiful and whoever does this art deserves the world and more.
I love found family books and yes this counts even if it is their actual family. Charley and Zada seemed cool as heck and I’d love to hang out with them. Ellery seemed grumpy at times and there were times I thought it came off as annoying, but I also recognize that behavior in my own personality and I have to sit back. Knox was fun and he seemed like such a sweet and loyal guy. I also love how golden his eyes are on the cover.
The way the supernatural beings were described were super cool too. I would love to know that the world is actually just full of strange little beings I can be friends with. I wish we could have seen even more of them.
I will ALWAYS cry when the ending is adorable and this did not disappoint. Magic and love always win for me....more

I was a huge fan of Sher’s debut book. This was such a pleasant surprise and perfect timing that Sher reached out for me to read and review her sophomore novel.
I’m unfamiliar with the original story this was adapting, but it seemed like a very interesting tale. This was a quick read and I was thankfully able to finish it in a day.
I went back and forth on Xian. In the beginning he was so sweet but he still had moments that made me question him. After a while I was frustrated with him. The way he and Zhen flip flopped gave me whiplash. Zhen was the same throughout the whole book so I appreciated that. He was so cute and forgiving almost to an infuriating degree.
I expected the villain but the twist about it was very well done. Didn’t see it coming at all.

I loved this book. Getting a nifty box of goodies with my physical ARC was awesome and I knew I would enjoy this.
When I first started this book, I was worried about getting lost in the story. There was so much talk about paying attention to clues and keeping up with the story I was sure I wouldn’t understand what was going on. Thankfully, it’s easy to keep up with and the writing is done so well that it reminds you if you missed anything. As the clues came together I was gasping.
The whole coven was such a delightful group. I found myself wanting to be their friends too. Of course Bastion was my favorite. Poor Bastion. I felt so bad for him. Holding in my tears for him made my head hurt. I also have a soft spot for Jules. He was a real one. Cameron also crept up on me, the little asshole. The whole coven was too sweet for words. I love a good YA tight friend group.

I loved this story. So simple and sweet. Samson and Domingo were so cute together. Even Pablo got there in the end. I love stories like these where everyone is accepting and being gay isn’t the main issue in the story. Those stories are fine, but it’s good to see things be normalized. I haven’t read too many novels in verse, so this was a great break from my usual read. I didn’t really know the story of Sampson and Delilah, so this was also refreshing and new for me.
