I'm not a fan of the format which includes characters talking about past events like interludes but it has a hokey unauthentic feel. You need to be a little patient with this one similar to the first book of her Broken Earth trilogy. In the end it's worth it though. NKJ wraps a Sci-fi and Urban Fantasy blend into a story that's really about racism and gentrification. Compelling symbolism, blunt honesty and a fighting tension bring it all together.
