I don't play D&D much anymore but I still like to pick up new materials to satisfy my nostalgia and collecting habit. This publication reminded me of the old Dungeon magazine that I used to love. One of the things I always enjoyed about those older magazines was the fact that they would trigger my imagination even if I didn't use a particular adventure. The same seems to be true for this new BroadSword publication. I also enjoy the fact that each issue will be focused on one theme. The first theme is fantasy of course.

I really like the MHI series. They are always wild rides filled with action, adventure and fighting monsters with big guns. It was interesting to see how the different authors put their own stamp on these stories. Some were MHI but others were about other monster hunting groups from the series.
The stories ranged from good to great. There was not a single one that I did not care for. Great stories by great authors. This makes a nice addition for any fan of the series....more

Nice comic book art and a fast paced story makes this a fun read. I would like to see more that makes it stand out for so many other "Buffy" style stories though.

It is the late 1800s in Boston, The Great Houses rule the Great States of America, The Great Houses war is still fresh in everyone's minds. Airships ply the sky. Ghosts and demons are real. The upper class rules all while the middle and lower classes solely exist to serve the Great Houses. Some famous faces will be seen including Nikolai Tesla, Thomas Edison, Harry Houdini, and Granville Woods (I know that last name wasn't one that I recognized either). There is also an ex-Pinkerton Detective and a young woman that can photograph spirits. They will all come together for a wild steampunk adventure.
The artwork is rough in spots which can make it hard to figure which character is which at first. The story is good and flowed nicely. A nice introduction to this world....more

I have to say that I wasn't sure about some of the stories when I started reading them but for the most part liked them by the time I was finished with them. Each of the stories focuses on a different main character including some that are not featured in the main series. They are also from different times, but all before the main series. They add a nice bit of background to the world.

The world's greatest heroes. They have saved the world several times. But they are still human. This series shows the flaws of these heroes.
It is always interesting to see the human side of heroes. But the problem is that this collection only seems to focus on those flaws. I did not feel like I had a good connection to the characters as heroes before I started seeing these flaws so it made me care a little less for them. So I enjoyed the story but did not feel that invested in it.
The artwork was decent and seemed to fit the story but it wasn't my favorite style....more

An evil mastermind is trying to destroy the world's economy. Riots are breaking out worldwide and a beautiful South African agent can't decide if she wants to kill Eggsy or help him.
First off, this is not connected with the second movie in any way. It is a sequel of the first Eggsy collection which is similar but different to the first movie. I really enjoyed the movies, so decided to try the base materials. The main difference between the movies and the comics is that the comics are rougher or edgier.

I decided to read this collection after having seen and enjoyed the movies about these characters. The movie is based on the comic book so it is the original material. there are differences between the two. First, Eggsy mentor is his uncle and not the friend of his father. The book is edgier, or more raw, than the movie. The training makes the Kingsman organization less of a Knights of the Round Table Group and an actual branch of the government.
So it is different but if you like the movie , you should like the comic as well....more

This is one of those series that I learned about after having seen the movie. They are similar in lots of ways but there are some big differences as well. Motivations change, reaction change, and the overall feel of the story is grimmer and darker. The thing is some of the differences make the comic better and more believable while some make the movie better. Overall I liked them both....more

I have not read the earlier books so I wasn't as familiar with the characters as the author assumed i would be. While I didn't really feel lost, I did feel like I had come in late to the story and was trying to play catch up without much help from the author.
This might have been part of the reason that I never really felt a good connection with the characters. Of course, if you don't connect to the characters, you just won't care as much to what happens to them. A lot of the characters were described as being mysterious and/or having a shady past. even though this was never really explained. This also applied to the "legendary" storeroom which was supposed to be a big secret. I can buy that very few people had seen the insides of the room but not that they didn't even know if it really existed. The staircase that lead to it wasn't even hidden. Also from the size that was implied, it would be pretty hard to hide in a building like the bookshop.
Added to this, the characters seemed to react strangely to most events. There is a saying from medical training that goes "When you hear hoofbeats, think of horses not zebras".. The characters in this book don't think zebras, they think centaurs. The worse part is that the solution turns out to the equivalent of winged zebra centaurs and maybe a stray unicorn or two. In other words, they made some wild jumps in logic and then went beyond them and were still proven correctly.
The short story also threw me. The main story while far-fetched was definitely rooted in the real world. The short story had a strong supernatural aspect that just did not seem to fit with the world as described in the main story. There was also the minor annoyance that the short story seemed to take place before the main story but was not really pointed out so the reader just had to surmise that on their own.
I am giving the series the benefit of a doubt that if you read the books in order, they would be a little more enjoyable. But , unfortunately, I did not enjoy this entry enough to go looking for those earlier stories....more

While all of these stories are not linked, most have similar settings at least. Most involve people in the northeast section of the United States. Characters are usually from small coastal towns and are year rounders in areas that see a huge increase in population during tourist seasons. A lot of the characters are at least well off financially.
I did enjoy some of the stories but I had some problems with the overall series. The stories that I seemed to like best had a good setup but then just ended as soon as the setup was finished. For example, the body is found and the killer says, "yeah, I killed them" immediately. Other times, i just had a hard time making a connection with the characters. I guess I just didn't have enough common ground to be comfortable with them and they weren't different enough to make them seem exotic either....more

While it is not necessary to have read those other books, it will definitely help in understanding some of the comments made here.
This is basically stories of the 12 major Olympians (with a few extra thrown in as needed) from Greek mythology as told by Percy Jackson. So keep in mind, you are starting with classic Greek mythology filtered through the eyes of (the fictional) teenage Percy Jackson (which is filtered through the eyes of Rick Riordan , an older man, interpreting his views of his teenage character and making all of it family friendly, which can be a challenge with these tales).
I think this is a great way to introduce kids (and some adults) to Greek mythology. The stories are written to appeal to the modern reader. While they have been sanitized, they still hold enough of the basic mythology to get the story. I also liked that Mr. Riordan acknowledged some of the more parts that would sound strange to modern readers (like the gods basically marrying their siblings).
Some of the stories I basically knew, some were new, and others were ones that I had heard but had forgotten a lot of the details. I found it to be a fun, fast read. A nice addition to the Percy Jackson series....more

While none of the stories feature Magnus, they all are set in the setting shared by those books and each story features a character from that series. The Magnus Chase series is a spin-off series from the Percy Jackson series. Technically, you don't need to have read the Magnus Chase series (or the Percy Jackson series), but if you have read the Magnus Chase books than you would have a familiarity with the setting and characters which would increase your enjoyment.
Each of the stories takes place in a different 'world' from Norse mythology and a different character takes center stage. The stories are fun and it is always nice to see a secondary character get their time in the spotlight. I did enjoy the Thor element that helped to tie all of the stories together.
The stories (and entire book in fact) is fairly short and reads very fast. A nice addition to the Magnus Chase stories....more

It was originally published in 1982 . This edition came out in 2007. The most recent story (I think) was published in 1960. Most of the stories came out in the first half of the 20th century (1900 -1950). There are even stories by Robert Louis Stevenson, Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. So when you see that the book contains both old and new masters of murder and mayhem, keep in mind when the book came out.
This is a collection of 26 short stories all about Christmas season murder and mayhem with one Boxing Day story to wrap everything in a neat package. The authors are a nice collection of some of the better mystery writers through the ages. It is interesting that quite a few of the 'older' writers are said to be neglected at the time of publishing and they deserve to be remembered. I do find this to be true but the sad fact is a lot of the 'current' authors have also slipped into this category. Mysteries, especially short stories, tend to fade relatively quickly once a writer isn't putting out new material on a regular basis. When was the last time you saw Ellery Queen, Rex Stout, Ngaio Marsh, or Dorothy Sayers at your bookstore? Hopefully, ebooks will help to make some of these older writers be rediscovered.
Some people might complain that these stories are dated because they use phones with cords, don't use computers, and prices are amazingly low. But is amuses me that no one seems to complain when they read Sherlock Holmes. The stories seem to have fallen into the too old to read but not not old enough to be read as historical.
As a bonus, there is a page or two between each story with a Gahan Wilson cartoon and maybe a short amusing tale. Each story also has its own mini-introduction which is nice.
One author that would probably not be considered if this collection was being put together now is Woody Allen. Mr. Allen has fallen victim to that modern trap of his bad personal life outweighs his work that was considered good before that bad personal life was discovered.
So if you are willing to try something a little older, give this collection a shot and you might find a new (to you) gem ....more

The world is interesting. It is one of the better premises for a zombie outbreak that I have read. It seems to take care of a lot of the common problems in zombie stories such as if zombies eat people, why do so many people become zombies? I also like that a lot of the stories revolve around surviving more than fighting zombies.
Of course, like any collection with a bunch of stories by different people, I liked some stories better than others. But I would still recommend the collection. It made me decide to pick up the series to see if it is as good as the collection....more
