They Beautiful tale of three siblings staying in the great Aspen Hall with their proud and worldly cousin while their parents journey across the sea.
They make visits to their aunt in a humble cottage nearby who weaves an alternate reality in which the children learn lessons of humility, self-denial, and consecration.
Reminded me both of Pilgrim's Progress (though much more engaging), and Narnia (only with a more clear Christian message).
Highly recommend for children ages 8 and up....more

The struggles of the main character, Lucy, really resonated with me. She had such a hunger for knowledge and wished to go to school and study, yet was hindered by poverty and cumbered with the cares of many siblings. The story takes interesting turns as Lucy struggles along and learns what is most important in life....more

See the streets of London through the eyes of an urchin. He has no friends or support. He grows up in bitterness toward his father, who systematically wore down (and ultimately killed) the boy's mother with ill-treatment.
He is a survivor, learning to fend for himself, with no regard for right or wrong, and climbs the pecking order of the criminal world. What happens when a small kitten enters this violent world, followed by a street evangelist?
The themes in this book spoke to my heart, and I found it very well written....more

However, the main character has a deeper and more relatable personality, with flaws such as selfishness and anger (which are addressed and overcome throughout the story).
The young motherless girl is dismayed when her father leaves for mission work in Africa, but learns that her heavenly Father has lessons for her in the mundane tasks and trials at home.
I was surprised at the well developed story, with many timeless bits of wisdom woven throughout . The joyful and heart-wrenching moments are well balanced.

This historical fiction fills in the details with characters and events that have kept me rapt time and time again. A classic story that will build your appreciation for saints in time past, and build your faith in God.
Content Considerations:
1. While this account covers some unsavory facts (public whipping, dungeon with no facilities) it is always presented in a carefully clean manner. I consider it appropriate for family reading.
2. While throughout the book the gospel is presented clearly (along with the teaching of salvation by grace through faith), take note that the doctrine of the 16th century Anabaptists did not include unconditional eternal security. While references to this are very few and vague, be aware and make sure any younger readers understand this difference....more
Sweet and heartwarming old story of an orphan who rises above the anger and hate of those surrounding her by clinging to the King of Love. At first I Sweet and heartwarming old story of an orphan who rises above the anger and hate of those surrounding her by clinging to the King of Love. At first I wasn't sure of the doctrinal background as there were several references to artwork containing "a Madonna," etc., in the descriptive narrative (which typically might point to an author's devotion to or toleration of Mariology). I was happily corrected when I came to a plot twist involving a long-ago gospel street preacher leading someone to Christ. Very interesting.
Content considerations: very clean, appropriate for young readers.
It appears that Lamplighter publishers left this largely untouched in its original layout. The plot is somewhat disconnected, and there are a few typos, but the overall worth makes that easy to ignore....more

As with almost all YWAM books, this one provides children with an easy-to-follow biography of a worthy, real-life hero.
However, for adult or YA reading... I highly recommend the actual autobiography by Br Andrew himself (God's Smuggler) as it is much more captivating....more
