I really enjoyed the book Alice, by the same author, and was looking forward to this, as I loved the story of Red Riding Hood as a child. I have to be honest, having mostly loved all the previous books, I really did struggle with this one. It's not that I didn't enjoy it at all. It didn't really thrill me in the way some of the earlier ones did. I didn't feel on the edge of my seat. This book felt like hard work to get through, and by the time it did begin to get more exciting, near the end, I'd almost lost the will to live. So I'm going to have a break from the series for a while, and will hopefully enjoy books 6 and 7 more, when I decide to continue reading the series....more

However, I failed to connect with the main character, who seemed to act much younger than she was, and found myself losing interest as the story progressed. I'm hit and miss with young adult fiction, so this may appeal more to those who love YA fantasy stories.

I read this first book in the series quite a few years ago now. While sorting through books today I found the rest of the series, and have decided to try book two. If I enjoy it I'll continue with the series. If not, then that's a few more books for my next trip to the charity shop....more

I sometimes find fantasy novels hard to listen to in audiobook format, as they can be quite descriptive. So a positive for me while listening to the audiobook, was that this story wasn’t that visually descriptive. However, this is something I would have found a little disappointing if I’d chosen to read the book.
The Immortal Circus is a dark fantasy young adult romance, so if you like any or all of those things, I would definitely recommend this book.

A story of love, family, adventure, magic and self-discovery. I loved the magical and fantasy feel of the story, but as it felt a little too young adult for me, I couldn’t quite give it 5 stars. Definitely one I recommend to fans of young adult fantasy, and would probably appeal to teenagers.
