She gives an honest recounting of what her experience was and what her unmet needs were which is unique seeing as many of these memoirs are more about direct experience of being an outsider, she shows the othering that can happen with mental illness as a daughter, and at the end of the book recounts how her perspective has grown as shifted with her own age and life experience. Her party scenes were fun to read, and I am still curious about her journey into greater wellness and building the Tone It Up empire, however, it's clear this memoir was intended not to be an overview of her life, but to focus on the destruction mental illness can have within families through ayoung woman's perspective and experience. She has gone on to found the big silence which provides therapy to those in need....more

With such shame swirling around friendships ending, causing communities to choose sides or gossip or fester, being true to yourself can feel isolating and Sleadd leads by example, helping the reader feel less alone in the complex emotional experience of friend breakups.
The relationship with a happily ever lovelife being applied to friendship rang true to me- I realize I have gone into nearly every friendship with a whimsical image of growing old together and sharing memories for many years to come. Life isn’t always about the duration of relationships, but that doesn’t mean the love and memories don’t endure.
I do believe that the parts where the author was upset with herself for not realizing dishonesty had occurred can be dropped - believing what a friend says, and learning it was false through their later reveal, doesn’t deserve to be a burden for the person who was lied to.
Recommended, thought provoking read with plenty of highlighted quotes. Thanks for writing this, Katherine!
A note on the most heartbreaking chapters in my experience: Clueless friend - it’s not our job to placate dishonesty in friendships, if I could reframe anything in this book it would be that it’s ok to trust and be trusted - if someone communicates something is fine when it’s not, then ends the friendship because if that self-betrayal, the person who accepted what they said as true should be alleviated of guilt. It’s not a mistake to believe people. ...more

She seemed a bit all over the place at times and it lacked structure, seemingly like a channeled, raw, talk. Her approach to spirituality and healing resonates, including the aspect of this book that says that when we have a story that is traumatic in nature, in one regard it can be best to not talk about it, alternatively, to transmute the once negative meaning of the story and share it evokes a new energy, and can be empowering to the storyteller and the reader/listener.
She also states that forgiveness is the most selfish thing we can do, because it lifts the burden that resentment bogs us down with and allows for a greater fullness in life (people who have resentment think of that person/people each day, typically), and how we will never want to forgive, but we must do it anyway to live full lives....more

Mariya writes in a way that is both detailed, mythological and draws you in. I listened to this audiobook and while that made it easier for the meditations (expect to stop and meditate multiple times per chapter), there were aspects where the narrator asks to refer to a photo and instead of saying a description of the symbol, the image is lost in the audio-version. A lot of the activities called for purchasing a lot of new oils, herbs, etc. I purchased all of the items for the initial ceremony (silver bracelet, salt, moonstone, cedar oil, jasmine oil) and was able to reuse some of those and became more selective about exercises I did or using jasmine in place of rose, or bookmarking practices to do once certain items arrived. Lots of numerology as well- more of a download than logical understanding for me and I trust what sticks was meant to. Thanks Mariya!

I appreciate how she both wrote and edited her own memoir, the latter of which is uncommon- it shows trust in her ability to tell her narrative the way that she wanted to, or a disregard for those who wouldn't understand or choose to not have grace with her or her story.
