I loved the characters, but unfortunately, the magic was way too confusing. There's some mystical lake of dreams, and dreaming drugs--both good and bad, tarot reading, and something called numinatra. It just didn't hook me the way it seemed to hook others. I'm bummed because like I said, the characters were excellent and while I'd like to continue the story to see what happens to the Rook and Rose, I don't think I have it in me to read anymore about the magic in this story, which is a huge part of this world. ...more

Therefore, I was excited to get my hands on this one when I heard it was coming out this year. This story was a fun romp on the open seas, and I especially appreciated that the protagonist was of the older variety and also a mother. So many mothers think that their days of adventure and discovery are behind them with the obligations of motherhood, but that's simply a myth that more authors than just SA Chakraborty need to dismantle....more

I should have picked this up sooner. It was full of dynamic characters, an interesting magic system, a slow burn romance, and crazy ending. I can’t wait to see how it all concludes, and since I didn’t get to this sooner, I don’t have to wait to read the sequel. Score!...more

Even though I don't read SJM(not into faeries), I picked this up since it's been awhile since I've read a good vampire book, and what I can say is that the characters are definitely interesting. I really liked the interactions and relationships of the three main characters--Oraya, Raihn, and Vincent. The vampire factions were also unique. However, the Kejari tournament felt like a cheap Hunger Games knockoff. Ultimately, I just didn't find myself invested in the external conflict which left this book not quite living up to the hype. I get that the romance/smut is the main selling point of a series like this, but a damn good plot outside the relationship is just an important. Unfortunately, I just didn't think the book delivered on that front....more

It’s a good thing I didn’t need to read the first in the series to understand this one. All the characters were interesting and had great backgrounds, and the setting of the national park was a perfect place for suspense. I especially loved Daisy the rescue dog—no surprise there....more

Just thinking about what comes after death can send me into a quick panic. The unknown truly terrifies me and has me avoiding thinking about it at all cost. Therefore, I was a bit surprised to find myself picking this novel up considering its focus on death. Thankfully, it didn't set me off, and I actually found it quite comforting. I especially loved the characters of Nelson and Hugo. They made me miss my grandpa and childhood dog in the best way. The theme of death being a new beginning also earned my appreciation since it helped calm some of my fears. The one thing I did not like is Wallace's ending. I think it went against all the rules that were established in the beginning of the book and seemed like an obvious and easy out. That being said, I would still recommend this book to others because it has a heartwarming message about second chances and the great beyond....more

TI think it's safe to say that this series is like fast food--you know you shouldn't eat it, but it's okay to treat yourself everyone once in awhile. This sophomore effort was a lot more steamy than the last one which I'm sure a lot of readers loved including myself. I also really enjoyed how many new secondary characters we got to meet as Poppy made her way into the Atlantia fold. The one thing that did get on my nerves were the lines that were repeatedly thrown at each other by Poppy and Casteel. The constant "You're violent, and I like it," "Let's just pretend," and "It turns me on when you stab me." That got a little old fast and left their banter lacking at times. Nevertheless, I flew through it in a week, and I'm onto the next. I can't wait to see how the cliffhanger that this one ended on turns out in the next installment....more

It definitely gave me Hocus Pocus vibes but for adults. Yes, the romance was really fun and screamed happily-ever-after, but what I actually fell in love with was the town of Graves Glenn. I seriously wish I could live there, or at the very least, live there during the fall season. It seemed so cozy and whimsical. In short, this was just the story to be reading the week leading up to Halloween to give me all the spooky, scary skeleton funsies!...more

It's really unlike anything I've read before in that I have no idea what I just read, and yet, I really enjoyed it. True, not a lot happens plot-wise in this book, and yet, I was completely captivated by how dynamic the characters were written and all of their crazy discussions on some pretty heady topics such as space/time, physics, power, morality, motivation, and more. Each character is so completely unique and well fleshed out that I enjoyed reading from all six perspectives which is not usually my cup of tea. Yes, the magical building of this world is obviously lacking in a big way which resulted in it losing a star in my rating, but I loved the characters enough to still really enjoy the story....more

Her way of handling social and political issues is always astounding, and this time around was no different. The topic she tackled for this story was the coronavirus. Risky move considering how dividing this topic still is at the moment, and yet, it doesn't even seem like you're reading a book about Covid in the slightest. Picoult manages to take an incredibly polarizing subject and instead magically weaves a beautiful story of adapting and finding yourself and how you fit in the world. She avoids all the political rhetoric and simply creates a story anyone can fall into regardless of their views on the virus. And can we just take a moment to recognize that twist she threw into the middle of the book--just wow! I had no idea that was coming, and I loved how it opened up so many intriguing questions and ponderings about the fabric of life. Even more shocking is that Picoult wrote this novel in only a year. All the research, insight, and stories that went into this doesn't seem possible in just one year--a year in lockdown at that--and yet, she did it. As always, hats off to you, Picoult. I truly believe you are one of the best contemporary authors of our time!...more

Obviously, the strength and faith This book had me absolutely in awe of the human spirit and at the same time absolutely embarrassed. Let me explain. Obviously, the strength and faith of this family and the hell they went through had me astounded and believing in people like only a good story can. However, a hundred years later and I look around to find so little of that strength, faith, and compassion in people around me today. This family of the past was able to give up literally everything--their house, family, safety, food, and more--to survive and hope for a better life under unimaginable circumstances, and yet, here in present day America, we can't even get the majority of people to wear a mask or get a shot to help themselves and their fellow man out. It makes me wonder how we got here? How did we become so incredibly selfish and privileged? The sad truth is that this little Russian family and their harrowing story of the past represents the true spirit of America more than most Americans living today. I encourage any reader yearning for a reminder of what true strength, freedom, and faith looks like to pick up this book. You won't be disappointed....more

I was hesitant because I didn't know if I was in the mood for a long romance fantasy series, but I guess I was wrong because I was quickly sucked in. I loved how strong and independent the protagonist was, and while the romance was your typical insta-love with many beaten to death tropes, I was still able to quite enjoy it because let's be honest, sometimes we're not looking for the next great American novel but something just trashy and fun. This book definitely fit that bill. Also, I found J. Armentrout's take on vampires and werewolves to be new and interesting. She builds a really unique and unheard of take on it which I really appreciated. With that said, I've already bought the next two books in the series....more
