I'm amazed that everyone survived the trip after hearing about all the toils they went through. There were several moments while listening that I completely lost focus in what I was listening to though - something with the writing style wasn't entirely captivating for me. The audiobook was well narrated though!...more

But I felt like there was something missing which is keeping me from giving the full 5 stars. Something about the 3rd act drama felt trite to me which likely is part of the reason. Still a very fun read and I'm looking forward to Eve getting her time to shine in the last book of the trilogy....more

Five siblings try to figure out the truth year later when they are left with a pile of clues. They are the brink of deciding what to do with their family's camp after the death of their parents. Told through multiple perspectives and occasionally slipping into flashbacks, the reader also tries to understand the timeline of that night. I wasn't able to predict the perpetrator which tends to be a nice surprise. However, I found parts of the book to be a bit long and tedious to get through. I had a difficult time telling some of the characters voices apart as well....more

Ruth is very sheltered by her ultra religious father, yet when she sneakily reads books from her school and public library (namely the Twilight series), she becomes obsessed with the idea of someone to fall in love with so that she (or the lover) can give up something to show how much they actually love each other. Gag me. There are so many heavily dropped parallels to Twilight that I actually rolled my eyes at a few. While I understand why Ruth and Everett have the hots for each other (view spoiler)[(their common event of Everett saving her life more than once),(view spoiler)[ I couldn't really get behind it and didn't believe it. That and the slightly unrealistic nature of certain plot points (Ruth still living at home into her 20s even though she doesn't like living at home or seem to like/respect her parents and the ending of the book (view spoiler)[where Ruth decides to burn down her father's church but then seems to overlook the fact that she had hostages at one point - she lets them go - but then seems surprised to have the cops on her and Everett's heals at the end.(view spoiler)[) And don't even get me started about that "open" ending. (view spoiler)[They are speeding through the night away from her scene of the crime of arson and manslaughter to Texas where they supposedly won't be caught because it's "across state lines" but there is a bridge that the police are just starting to raise but they are going to continue racing towards and across it anyway? The only redeeming aspect of this book was the somewhat convoluted plot that I was able to put together after receiving only a few hints: (view spoiler)[an incredibly rich church that funding can't really be accounted for, high quantities of drugs being sold by a random biker gang near town which made drop off points in Everett's dad's garage, and an overlooked murder by the police force of one of the runners of said drugs.(view spoiler)[ I was intrigued enough to continue reading for that reason alone, but nothing else about this was enjoyable. Jack Reacher is a smart guy, but I really didn't appreciate the cheating on his significant other. I think I'll try out a few more in this series....more
