I considered this book, the fourth and last of the series, significantly weaker that the others. Still, most series have trouble maintaining quality / pace / reader consciousness even up to the third book, let alone the fourth. As examples, I cite - well, how much time have we got? Do you want a few examples, or dozens or ...?
The first failed series that comes painfully to mind is riverworld, by Philips Jose Farmer. The initial novel, "To Your Scattered Bodies Go", won a Hugo Award, and had some some very strong points - but even in that introductory segment, there were hints that all might not turn out well. It descended farther and farther with each successive book (perhaps leading to the discovery of black holes?). The final insult - the collection of riverworld stories, ranks with my very very least favourites.

Much as I would love to revisit the world of Gilbert Gosseyn -I think it would be best to recall "the good old days" rather than trying to go there again.

Since my original rating was 'D", I gave this book a Goodreads score of 1 star. While one star may seem harsh - it would be pointless to go through the motions of rating novels and books if you were going to restrict your ratings. I have seen this procedure used in judging photography contests, where judges are not permitted to give a score of one star (or whatever equivalent to stars). If scoring is out of 5, and then prevent judges from using 1 (or even 2, I think), then it is NOT true to say that the subject is being assessed out of 5.
I do not have a tag / bookshelf / category for pulp. This novel would pretty much fit that category - reminiscent of the Lensman series by E.E. "Doc" Smith....more

I recall buying it, reading it, then somehow losing my copy. I didn't find another copy for years and I rated this novel " B " when I read it in 1971.
I recall buying it, reading it, then somehow losing my copy. I didn't find another copy for years and years - and now I find myself with books than I know what to do with. Downsizing is definitely a bummer - especially for an ardent collector. On the other had, the SF & F books will probably be easier to deal with than those thousands of old Marvel Comics (does anyone need Amazing Spider-Man #6 - 1963 vintage? - in crummy condition?), or the boxes and boxes and boxes of fossils.
Downsizing definitely does not spark joy. Oops - yet another review that went sideways.
