This is an autobiography of Stan Lee - a graphic novel (call it a big comic book). His ginormous ego (one is reminded of the egos of certain present and former presidential candidates south of the border) comes through strongly, and I had to skim some bits because it was overwhelming (especially near the end, when there was little content that I was interested in. Still the vital question - how much did Stan Lee actually write? He says ~~"I didn't have time to write [all] of the scripts" - Did he write ANY of the scripts?? Was he strictly an Idea man???
It may sound as though I'm splitting hairs - but the vast popularity of marvel superhero movies suggests that there is a constituency who would like to know the truth of who wrote all those comic book scripts. Did Jack Kirby write all of the scripts (and thought balloons as well?) for Fantastic Four, the Avengers and the Mighty Thor? Did Steve Ditko write the script etc. for Amazing Fantasy #15, and all those early issues of the Amazing Spider Man? Did Don Heck write all of those Invincible Iron Man, Captain America, and Ant Man (later Giant Man) scripts? And I could go on through the rest of early marvel pantheon - but I will cease and desist here.
I don't want to tear down the incredible legacy of Stan Lee. Far from it. I have no doubt that Stan Lee deserves enormous credit for the unbelievable history of the marvel comics (not to mention the mind-boggling alternate universe where we find ourselves, with endless marvel movies and tv series etc. etc.). BUT - credit for Stan Lee should not be at the expense of credit for those who did some of the work on those many many issues of the comics we hold precious.
