This is my third book from his works. As usual, the book was like sitting on a bullet train's roof, super fast and there was a constant adrenaline rush. Goes without saying, that Marrs's books are not your cushy or happy ending kind of books. It ensures that it grips you from the get-go and the grip keeps closing on you like a Ranger's Chokehold as you knock off chapters and only when you finish the books do you breathe easy. It always keeps you on the edge, in all the 3 books that I have read, I found it extremely difficult to choose a finishing point while I was reading the book, Each and every chapter finishes with a cliffhanging moment, so 'one more chapter and I'll put it down' doesn't really work here.
So, the story revolves around Nina and Maggie. Maggie is the mother and Nina is the daughter. It talks about their dysfunctional relationship and the kind of life they live due to bad choices and wrong decisions. The story is told through the POV of Nina and Maggie. It also goes back in time and visits the present timeline to summarize the story, so there are lots of flashbacks. The uniqueness of the storytelling is pretty impressive, and there will be places where you would feel bad for the daughter and hate the mother when you read her POV and the opposite when you read the mother's POV. This book talks about or rather tells us how deep and sometimes complicated a mother's love or care can be. It's one of those books that makes you feel goosebumps and stop and think about how complicated human psychology can be. This is no doubt another masterpiece from the Journalist turned-author John Marrs.
