Heading back to Vermont to visit the Shipleys and Rossis in their little town always gives me the coziest of feelings.
Matteo Rossi left town immediately after high school, with only a few sparse visits in 14 years. He’s gone from a struggling ski sharpener to a successful entrepreneur who owns a guided ski adventure company, but he never got the girl he pined for all those years ago.
Leila Giltmaker also pined for a boy she couldn’t have and didn’t understand why he would suddenly disappear from her life after being friends for all through high school. They were thick as thieves, along with Rory, until Matteo moved and never returned.
Unfortunately, Matteo’s absence leaves a hole that Leila thought she could fill with a marriage to Rory—which turns out to be one of the biggest mistakes of her life.
When Matteo returns to town, it’s almost like he never left. His family accepts him back into the fold with only a little resistance, and their almost immediate banter and razzing is proof of that. He’s missed so much while away, but nothing as much as Leila.
Matteo and Leila have so much chemistry it leaps off the page. I love that they try to resist their feelings without realizing that the other is just as head over heels the entire time.
When Leila decides she wants a baby, a torrent of feelings is unleashed. I loved watching them navigate those feelings while also trying to maintain a professional distance throughout their ‘transactional deeds.’
There’s so much to love about this book, including Matteo’s pain from the death of his friend and business partner, Leila’s struggles with the timing of a pregnancy and her obstinate family, to the truly supportive family they all become.
I’m so happy that there is a spin-off from my beloved True North series, and we can continue to visit our favorite characters!...more
