The book was tailor-made for me I swear. From MasterChefy scenes, to Slavic mythology, to restaurant setting, to some delicious smut. I ate that up and asked for seconds, in the form of additional scene available on the author's site. I snickered every time MMC cried "Kurwa!" just because where I'm from it's a different thing from how it's used in Poland from what I understand. The meaning is generally similar but the usage totally differs. Still, it was hilarious to me.
Highly entertaining, my personal favourite from this author so far. If only there was a bit more smut...more

Like for real, my everything was clutched!!! To the point I probably need a masseuse. [image]
And I get why this book is not for everyone, but damn, it worked for me. On every level. It wasn't just spice either. I loved the writing, loved the emotion (fuck her parents!), loved the FMC (and let me tell you - it's not a given for me), loved the dynamics. I was in it from the get go. It's not a why choose situation, there's a guy she chooses and it's a rollercoaster but a good one. A little predictable but, come on. I mean, after that entrance? [image]

Honestly, what kind of juvenile nonsense bubble world is this? If I were either one of Lily's cousins I would strangle her a hundred times over. Those bitches must have the patience of saints. Is she really supposed to be 21, because I would think she's no older than 16. And Jett? Pfffft, give me a break. He's a boy playing at being a man so they are a total match.
Thank god this book is short or I would have dnf'ed it so hard.

I felt no connection to the characters, no compulsion to cheer them on or care about their outcomes. It got better in the second half, the pacing picked up, and the change of scenery helped, but overall I wasn't happy with this book. That's a real shame because I love my Crows and Alex Stern, Grisha was okay, and I was ready to welcome a new Bardugo friend with open arms, alas... On the genre side of things, I agree with people who view it as not a fantasy but more of a magical realism kinda proposition. Reminded me of Practical Magic, the book not the movie (although the movie was way more fun in my opinion). Maybe that's what was missing - fun. And I get it, not much fun could be had with Inquisition on your doorstep but a bit of levity could go a long way.

Maybe it was the lack of attention to details that got me. Scratch that, it was exactly the lack of attention to details. The storyline, the characters, the romance all were ok, they just needed more work and deffinitly more research into police investigations. I liked Nate and his small town charm and sincerity. His words about people in small towns being a community and how they care about one another, as opposed to big cities, rang true. Maybe not all small towns are like that but I want to believe that some are.
On Thin Ice had a lot of flaws and it had a lot of really good things too. Maybe for some it balances itself out.
Over and out.

I was weak, I admit. I saw the cover, salivated for ten whole minutes (I kid you not! It was embarassing) and only then did I read the discription. So I thought "Ok, two brothers, bladesmiths no less, one girl and a dog. This could be either really good or really smutty, with a lot of kink." Pervert that I am I was hoping for latter.
Sure, a lot of people would argue that, where brothers are concerned, it's icky and weird and all kinds of wrong. It's the same argument that The Vampire Diaries fandom voiced through the years. I, for one, never had the same hang ups. Not in my books or shows, at least. I'm greedy that way. I like my smut really smutty. And those guys on the cover? Can you honestly say that you wouldn't want to get it on with both of them? Aha, I thought so. [image]
So what went wrong? Why only 3 stars?
One star went out because Jo was portrayed as this perfect little angel. "Oh, she's so pretty, oh, she's so talented, she's a shiny star fallen from the sky." It went on and on and on. [image]
The other star was sacrificed for not enough sex. It was like you blink and you miss it. Such a let down. [image]

I love how she makes these couples so honest and open to communication. A total fantasy of course but that's why I love her books. No bullshit drama, just relax and enjoy. I'm hoping this will turn into a series, it certainly seemed that way from the blocks that were laid out. Smith, at least, deserves his own book. Fingers crossed, yeah?

But, and it's a very painful but, what makes Zapata bookLet me preface this by saying I absolutely love Zapata books, they are like food to the soul. But, and it's a very painful but, what makes Zapata books awesome did not work for this experiment. This book was just too long, way way too long for what it tried to achieve. It also abandoned almost every tangible storyline it started out with. In the end it kinda reversed to what in my opinion it should've been from the start a romance novel instead of a superhero flick. We spent too much time in Gracies head and absolutely not enough building an actual story outside of her relationship with the hero. Her problems with the "villains" went absolutely nowhere and were pretty unbelievable in the first place. Her choices and reasonings for dealing with that gave me a headache for rolling my eyes at too much. All in all this was a big mess.
Upon further consideration I decided to go from 4 to 3 stars on this.

When Leigh says she's doing a love triangle this is not what you have in mind, I for sure didn't. And maybe that's on me but I wouldn't even call it that to be honest. It was a weird situation for sure, but a triangle? I feel like the only one who could even consider it that was Joe because he was the only one emotionally involved in all this. Ever was such an unlikable character that I seriously doubted how all these people around her still cared enough to associate with her, and in Joe's case it was probably the memory of her more than how she was in the present. And Dom was a manipulative bastard from the get go and I couldn't give his actions any justification so I didn't care for him at all.
So when you add all that up and come out with two unlikable characters out of three, and the third one I should probably know more about, that doesn't bode well for a love triangle I should care about.

I am not joking, I was captivated from page one and could not for the love of me let go until I finished. It was everything. I wondered throughout why I thought of so many great books while reading it and it all became clear by the end. I don't want to give you examples for it might spoil things for you but you will understand eventually, I promise.

Also I was trying real hard to feel the chemistry but it was building even slower than usual.
All in all, this wasn't my favourite Zapata book by any stretch of the imagination.

That's how I feel about the writing style of this book. Too classy, old school, and out of time for a book like this. Writing like this, and it's only my opinion here, is appropriate for a historical novel, something taking place in a 19th century perheps. Or, at the very least, in a story where the main character is an immortal being. Only then I could be content with such a style. It only took away from the story here and I couldn't for the life of me concentrate or enjoy it....more
