I also want to make it VERY clear that a lot of my enjoyment in this book was based on two things: first, the author very clearly loves the sport of hockey and boy howdy does it show. She knows how the game is played and it's included in the book in a way that I, a massive fan of hockey, enjoy very much. It's a thing that's lacking for me in so, so, so many sports romance novels (seriously, there's nothing in the world more likely to make me give a sports romance a single star review than ignoring the actual sports aspect of it), but if you truly don't give a damn about hockey then it might be too much for you.
Second, the romance is an extremely slow burn - the characters become real friends first and then stumble their way into being in love. It takes many, many, many pages for this to happen, and again: it's a thing that I, a person who hates instalove with a violent, wrathful passion, adored about this book. Your mileage may very much vary.
I also want to note in passing that there's no graphic sex in this book, and the vast majority of it is non-penetrative sex. That's not to say that this book isn't hot as fire (I certainly think it is!) but if you're the kind of person who needs lots of penetrative sex for a romance novel to be satisfying, this probably won't do it for you.
And as a VERY final note, how fucking much do I love that the cover model looks like he could actually be a hockey player? GOD, I'm so tired of dehydrated gym-bodies on the covers of sports romances, and this dude looks like he might actually have something at least resembling a barrel of muscle torso and I'm very ...more

it's one of the few books that actually has scared me while i was reading it and even after a solid 12 readings (at minimum) it still gives me the heebie jeebies on occasion. i fucking love tony. i fucking love cassie and stephen. i love the build between tony and lee. i love brianna and ashley. i love the house and the atmosphere and the building horror of it all. it's just so very very very much my kind of ghost story.
the other two books in this trilogy are fine. i remember enjoying them. i've never reread them and i don't think they're required to read this one as you get a pretty solid recap of the first book throughout this one. :D
tw: (view spoiler)[this book was published in early 2005 and it should be noted that there is a term for developmentally delayed peoples that has since become unacceptable that is used at (i think only) one point in the book. there's also a couple of uses of the word "f*g", though mostly from gay characters self-referring. There were a couple of bits that were a little rushed, but the ending was *so* satisfying and there were parts that we so delightfully creepy that it made the hair on the back of my neck literally rise. 4.5 stars, rounded up...more
