Sometimes you come across a book and you just know you have to read it because it sounds too interesting to pass up. That’s what happened to me with ASometimes you come across a book and you just know you have to read it because it sounds too interesting to pass up. That’s what happened to me with A FERRY OF BONES AND GOLD. I had never read Hailey Turner, never even heard of her actually, but once I looked up her backlist I saw a ton of books that I probably would be interested in reading. This new release sounded right up my alley as it was described as a mix of Mortal Instruments and Charlie Cochet’s THIRDs series. And I think it definitely delivered on my expectations!
This is an urban fantasy with a small thread of romance. Our main character is a mage working for a division of like the FBI. There are a series of murders in NYC and the cops have asked for help from higher up, so Patrick needs to skip his much needed vacation and come deal with the case. What he finds is his worst case scenario.
If you like your urban fantasy to have a bit of everything, then you’ll enjoy this one. There’s Gods, magic, shifters and vampires. This is set in NYC and that was also done really well while laying this whole new world around the city. Thoroughly entertaining!
A FERRY OF BONES AND GOLD is fast paced and full of action. The writing and storytelling is engaging, the world building is interesting, and the characters are lovable. The romance thread between Patrick, our mage, and Jono, a shifter, was just the perfect amount and they are very sexy together. But I liked that it didn’t take away from the seriousness of the case and the things going on around them. A solid UF and I can’t wait for the next installment....more

I have been a fan of Kelley Armstrong for years and the Cainesville series is one that slowly pulled me into its mystery. When I first started reading it I wasn’t quite sure where the paranormal angle was, but it’s slowly (quite slowly) been coming out. I didn’t jump on reading book 4 when it came out because I’m holding out for the audiobook, and lucky that because this novella takes place between books 3 and 4. So perfect timing for me to read it without having experienced book 4 yet.
LOST SOULS has us investigating another case that mixes what is believed to be a touch of paranormal and in this case an urban legend more so than an omen. The case was interesting in and of itself, but the way the author pulled so many personal strings around this case to draw the reader in made it all the more appealing. And all those strings in this case revolve around Gabriel. He’s the focal point for me in this story. His relationship with Olivia has suffered a bit after Deceptions and he can’t find it in himself to open up to her to fix it. Patrick is also looking to connect with him. The case gives the perfect backdrop to try and work through some of those issues.
Gabriel is quite complex as a character. There are many walls he’s erected to protect himself. Feelings are not something he’s used to or deals with well. But I think I’m finally seeing an internal struggle that he can hopefully overcome before the series ends.
Overall, this short novella delivered on the edge of intrigue I have come to love about this series while giving us some crumbs to mull over on the personal side. Perfectly done and I can’t wait to read more....more

And so it comes to an end. I have gone through a lot of ups and downs with the Kitty Norville series, and I admit that I skipped the previous book in this series as it was about Cormac. Why, you may ask? Well, a lot of my issues with this series center around his character. Because I LOVE his character so much. And I really dislike where his storyline went from quite early on in this series. Instead of being bitchy about his one solo story, I decided to skip. I know nothing good awaited for me there, and I considered dropping the series altogether. But then this came up and I saw it was the end. And my OCD told me you have to know what happens.
KITTY SAVES THE WORLD is action packed and wraps up storylines that were previously started. It is a good wrap up book to consolidate this series and if you’ve been a fan all along this will be a great end cap. I tried to put my issues aside and just enjoy this book for what the author gave us, and I managed to enjoy the story.
Kitty is still a very real character. She struggles with the chaos in the paranormal world and the fact that the responsibility to save the world depends solely on her. But all she really wants in the end is to be normal. Enjoy life with her husband Ben, run with her pack, maybe have a couple of kids that call her mom running around. She knows a lot of that is not in the cards for her, but that doesn’t take away the desire.
I found myself liking her again because of that. There’s something very real and human about her character in this book. And she is still very much kick ass.
Then we have Ben. I came to terms with the fact he’s her mate. And learned to like him in this book. No, I’m not happy. No, I’m not satisfied. But he is a good mate for her and I saw a ruthless side to him that would do anything and risk anything to protect her.
I was glad to not see a lot of Cormac in this book. God, it hurts to say that. I didn’t want to deal with the Amelia issues in his head or see a lot more of that, so his presence is nice but he’s a side character here and I was ok with that. The one reference that is made at the what ifs might’ve hit too close to home.
I loved the actual conflict. As usual with this series, that is something Carrie Vaughn does very well. None of these books are ever repetitive and they always have a great obstacle that the characters must overcome. This was no different and quite a fast paced read.
I am happy to have read this, but I’m also ok with letting go of this world. KITTY SAVES THE WORLD was a bittersweet end for me....more

After my enjoyment of book 2 (which I read recently) I was pumped to read this last installment in the Cainsville series and finally be caught up again. DECEPTIONS was just as intriguing as I was expecting but it was also missing a certain spark that I can’t quite put my finger on to make it as good as the previous one.
We are finally starting to understand the puzzle that has become Olivia’s life and how it’s tied into the fae past and future. For her, making a decision between Ricky or Gabriel it’s bigger than just who she loves. And both of the fae factions they represent are fighting to make sure their side wins.
I really enjoyed the whole premise of the story arc even if I’m not a fan of triangles. I have my favorite in sight but I’m not sure how this will all turn out in the end.
This was a book of answers. As many riddles as we’ve faced in this series, a lot of things get uncovered here. From the fae relation, to Olivia’s own past and her birth parents being killers (or are they?).
Never a dull moment when reading the Cainsville series, it keeps you on your toes for sure and captivated by the story. Now that we got all these answers, I can’t help but think the next book will end the series with a resolution. Another sad day for me. I wasn’t aware before I started reading this book that this would be the end of the series. It’s bittersweet to see some of my favorite characters put on the shelf, but in POISON FRUIT, they went out with a bang! As much as the greedy reader in me is not happy.
When we left Pemkowet last, there was a lot of turmoil in Daisy’s life. Especially when it comes to her love life. AUTUMN BONES brought a lot of developments in that area and it’s left Daisy a bit confused. I admit I was too. I had my “team” picked out but there were always things that made me wonder if they could overcome the rules of their separate species and be happy together.
So in POISON FRUIT Daisy has to deal with a lot more of that! But let’s not forget that Daisy is Agent of Hel and pretty kickass herself. She’s faced with multiple supernatural problems threatening the town of Pemkowet. I admit I was thoroughly freaked out by the first one they faced. Without spoiling what it is, the fact that someone can pretty much be scared to death in their sleep gave me all kinds of heebie jeebies.
But the plot in this book is a lot bigger than solving a simple supernatural mystery and keeping the town safe. There are much larger supernatural forces at play in Pemkowet and they are trying to take over. It is up to the Agent of Hel to stop them. One thing that I’ved loved about this series is the author’s ability to weave in multiple complex storylines that give this series so much more depth and layers. They each put a different part of our main characters to the test.
POISON FRUIT was no exception. It is a thrilling, edge of your seat ride! And one of those few books in a year that I gobbled up whole, in one sitting. I quite literally had a hard time putting it down for long.
If you haven’t read this series yet, then I highly recommend you give it a go! If you like your genres mixed a little, with some romance and humor to your urban fantasy, then this is for you. If you like a heroine that is kickass and confident, but also very down to earth and relatable, then you will love Daisy as much as I did! If you were a fan of the early Sookie Stackhouse books, then you will love Agent of Hel.
I am happy to see where the characters ended up. As I said before, without knowing this was the end, I was surprised when I got to the end of the book and thought “Wait a second, this is the end of the series! NOOOOOOOOOOO”. I could’ve read about Daisy’s adventures for many more books to come. But I’m also happy to see this whole series have stayed and end on a really high note. And I can’t wait to see what the authors does next.

It is a sad day. To see the end of a beloved series. But it's also a happy day when you see the author has done the series and the characters justice. And that's how I feel about this book. I was so excited to actually read it! And while I was reading it, as much as I was enjoying it I didn't want it to end.
Just know one thing when you go into reading this book. Expect the unexpected. I always wondered how this would end in a way that you would know there's a final HEA and not more danger coming their way. I didn't want to leave them hanging waiting for the next big thing. I just didn't know how it could happen. But Ms. Harrison did that perfectly. Unexpectedly. It is action packed where it needs to be, even though it lagged a bit at times. It's world breaking!
I laughed of course, because well, there's Jenks. I also cried with this book. Because some of our favorites are getting a little older, they also have changed, matured, gone down different paths in their lives. Found their own HEAs. I get teary eyed thinking about it again.
So here's a quick final recap:
Rachel: I admit I might've gotten a tiny bit annoyed with Rachel and some of her thoughts and attitude. But those were very minor moments. She showed us how far she's come from where she started! She's tough, she's independent, she knows what she can do and has the confidence to get it done. I can honestly say she's one of the characters I've seen go through the most growth in a series. Without changing her essence. She's comfortable in her love and she loves unconditionally.
Trent: I'm probably one of the few that fell in love with the bad boy business man from the first book. I have always found his conniving ways sexy as hell. Cool and understated. Once he owned up to his feelings for Rachel a few books back, he has made my heart pitter patter more as time passes. And I can honestly say this book seals the deal. I fell for Trent harder in this book than I had before. And that's saying something. He's perfect in his imperfections, and I'm sad to let him go most of all.
Ivy: Although I can't say I'm a fan of where Ivy ends up, I'm happy to see her happy. Even though it's not what I envisioned for her. I can see how this can work.
Jenks: My poor little pixy. I love Jenks dearly. He might just be my favorite character of this series! He's small but full of personality, and even as he ages, he still packed quite the punch in this book. He makes me laugh, he makes me cry. And he too has found his HEA. Not where I would've thought he would end when we started. He's gone through heartache and tough times. And through it all he stood by Rachel's side. The loyal companion willing to do anything.
Al: Our favorite demon. The one we love to hate. Devious, selfish, with a heart of gold. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed seeing all the different facets of Al in this book. And if I could read a mini series about him next, I would. He's an integral part of this story, he also made me laugh and cry. He might've even made me swoon a bit! He's come such a long way from the evil being in that short story I read about his treatment of Ceri. Another great character growth for sure!
Bis: Could I just summarize this by saying "Awwww atta boy!" Just makes me happy to see how much this little gargoyle has grown and what he's capable of!
I have cared about these guys like family! And I can honestly say I can rest happy with how this got wrapped up! By the time I finished the book, I didn't leave feeling depressed to not have more of them. I felt happy about their journey and where they ended up. And that's probably one of the best things I can get out of a final book. I am putting this series on the Keeper shelf with a smile on my face and a satisfied feeling in my heart. Job very well done Ms. Harrison!
Favorite Quotes:
"So it's been like what, three months? Does he still curl your toes?" "Totally," I said, and he made a rude noise at my blissful smile. "He's a total toe curler." "Awww, this is sweeter than pixy piss," he said with false sarcasm.

I have read Chloe Neill in the past and I admit that I enjoy her work. As excited as I was to see she had a new series coming out, for some reason I didn’t rush to get to it. See, that’s a lot of how I’ve felt lately about the Chicagoland Vampires series. The books are always good. And yet, I am still behind reading it because there’s just a certain something (don’t ask me what it is) that I find missing. It doesn’t make me want to rush to read it. Maybe it could just be that Merit and Ethan have gotten a bit stale for me. So I blame that feeling on not reading this as soon as this review copy hit my hands months ago!
This has all the potential to becoming one of my new favorite paranormal series! First of all, it involves magic. There aren’t enough urban fantasy books centered around that in my opinion. But the how it’s done it’s also so cool and completely different. Kudos to Ms. Neill for some awesome world building. And it was done flawlessly. There’s no crazy info dump being book one trying to explain to you all the details and workings of the world. You are learning as you go along, oftentimes with the heroine. I was always fully immersed in the story.
The setting is post war (with paranormals) New Orleans. The Veil was closed after and all types of magic is forbidden. People who have the natural ability to do magic are called Sensitive. If they don’t learn how to control the magic within them, they turn into wraiths. People found guilty of using magic are sent to Devil’s Isle, which serves as a prison, but it’s more like a town just filled with some unwanted elements. Me? Sold on this 100%. I thought it was brilliant.
Claire, our heroine, has been dealing with the death of her father during war. She’s keeping her supply store running and trying to hide as best as she can that she is a Sensitive. She doesn’t want the magic, but sometimes she can’t control it and it runs wild. As it happened one night that causes the chain of events that leads to her being introduced to what you would consider the truth about their reality. Oh and maybe save the world. I absolutely loved Claire. Why, you ask? Because she kicks ass in the most natural way. She’s not one of those bitchy women we see all the time in UF. She’s also not a know it all. She faces every situation as best as her knowledge lets her. Without losing her cool. Without getting into danger because she thought it would be the brave thing to do. She’s not after the accolades, she just wants things to go right and she will do whatever is needed for that. Very refreshing take on a UF heroine and I am a fan!
Then we have Liam. Sigh the hero. Yes, the hot alpha with a touch of bad boy. He’s a bounty hunter. His job is to find wraiths and turn them in. No, nothing magical about him other than the fact he’s gorgeous and enthralling! But he’s the one that spots that Claire is a Sensitive and takes her under his wing. Did I mention hot, alpha and bad boy? Liam is intense but with a side of mushy. After all the bad he’s seen, he can still go with his emotions and let them dictate what he does. He’s loyal to those around them, those he cares about. And he kicks major ass, so there’s that.
THE VEIL was the perfect introduction to this world and if this is anything to go by, I will be a loyal fan of this series. It’s action packed and fast paced, with enough sexual tension to keep a girl hoping. And with a cast of characters that I couldn’t have picked better myself. This book was exactly what I needed to restore my faith in the paranormal. Yes! There can be a new series that catches my interest and gets me giddy again! And that is Devil’s Isle....more

HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN is everything I would expect from an urban fantasy story set in New Orleans. A little muddy and a lot sexy. The story starts off with a bang introducing us to Augustine. Reason number 1 that you will love this book. Augustine is hot, sexy, sensual and just plain interesting. But let me tell you there’s nothing plain about this boy.
For readers of the HOUSE OF COMARRE you will be pleased to see he got a book. Yes, this is a spin off of that series, but I have to say (having read all the Comarre books) that you won’t miss out on anything by starting here. And other than the fact this is about a character in the same general world, HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN has such a different feel to the story that it almost doesn’t seem they were related. Up until there’s cameo appearances from my fave characters :)
So back to Augustine. He’s fae and a bit of a recluse bad boy. But tough enough that when the Guardian is killed, he’s in a way threatened to take on the job. The world building in this book is so rich with vampire that can walk in the day thanks to a witch curse. Witches that may want to take control of the city back, and fae that rule the underworld. When vampires threaten to overrule NOLA, it’s up to Augustine to stop them and keep the order.
Notice how I keep talking about Augustine and not so much the heroine? Well, I could take her or leave her. She was just ok. I had moments when I liked her but frankly some of her motivations were not so clear for me. Even towards the end. I find that she was a bit selfish and immature and I do look forward to seeing her grow into her character in the future.
If you’re looking for a new urban fantasy series to sink your teeth into that’s rich and original, with a good side of sexy, then look no further. HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN will hook you from the first page.

I read the first book in this series before I had experienced Karina Halle’s Experiment in Terror series. And it had originally creeped me out. Just when I thought that would be a standalone, we go back in time with Dawn and Sage and all the creepy supernatural dealings around them.
I don’t want to give spoilers from the previous book, but suffice it to say Sage and Dawn have been apart. While she’s been successful back home, Sage has been going on tour all over the world. As with the previous story, this book reads like a dark and paranormal ALMOST FAMOUS. We are back in the 70s and deep in the rock and roll culture. Groupies, sex, drugs. And creatures with sharp teeth. THE DEVIL’S REPRISE brings us another deal with the devil, and another debt that has to be paid. Be careful what you wish for.
While THE DEVIL’S REPRISE may seem to start off a bit slow, the build up of this story was perfect for me. I got frustrated right along with Dawn at seeing some of the things that had been happening. I enjoyed every concert. And my heart rate sped up with every sex scene. Because yes, this book was hot!
And then I had a really neat treat. For Experiment of Terror fans, this book will tie into that story. I didn’t realize it before and I’m not sure if it was explained in the previous book, but this series features the “Jacobs”. And also brings us a glimpse of Max, pre EIT. As soon as I made the connection with the cute redhead I squeee a little.
This is a must read for fans of Karina Halle’s EIT and for readers who aren’t scared of being frightened a bit. A well rounded story that delivers on the horror and the sex appeal. Halle’s writing is addictive!...more

Wow, I’m not quite sure where to start with what I want to say…. I love Kitty Norville. She’s always been a fresh change in a sea where the paranormal series blend together as they always have the same thing to say. The books in this series are always original in plot and there is usually an interconnected storyline or bad guy that drives them forward. That being said, I may just be done reading it.
I’ll try to explain why. Kitty lost the spark for me. In the past few books we haven’t gotten much in the way of changing of Kitty’s character. Yes, she’s the Alpha of her Pack. Yes, she’s learning to deal with the dangers she faces, but at the core she’s still a bit of a cynic and carries on the same way that she would’ve a few books back. I am not seeing the character growth.
Then there’s Cormac. I’ve seen his characters morph and change into this weird thing that now is really also a witch who lives in his body. I used to LOVE him. And I can’t find it in me to love him anymore.
As much as this story was still fresh and interesting, what with Kitty having to go to the Underworld and not knowing if she would make it out alive… I was sadly uninterested. Don’t get me wrong it’s still a good story. But I lost that love and spark. I feel like maybe it’s time to give this series a conclusion or a new twist.

There is something sort of magical about this series. I’m not sure if it’s the dark and gritty world, the fallen angels mixing with the humans, or just the Rockabilly feel of the story. It perfectly blends two eras by having a fallen angel that is kind of stuck in the clothes and mentality of the 50s (he’s the original), and the human girl he’s dating in the present, who has embraced the Rockabilly lifestyle (the wannabe).
I love both of their characters. Griffin Shaw, the Centurion, is just tortured by so many things. He’s on earth looking for his killer (well, his and his wife’s killer) while also trying to solve cases assigned to him. In between all that he sometimes has to transport souls of the recently deceased to the Everlast. He has a lot on his plate and in this book, I think he showed he was having a hard time prioritizing.
Kit on the other hand is awesome! She always shows an air of happiness and a tough exterior. However we come to realize it’s not all roses underneath. She’s in love with Griffin but deep down is hurting to have to compete with his dead wife’s memory. She tries to be happy, and she tries to do the right thing, and what’s good. And sometimes, in that search of justice and righteousness, she finds herself in the center of trouble. Her vulnerability made me cry at times.
In this book, Kit tries saving Grif’s takes. And by trying to save the ones marked for death they discover a new drug circulating that needs to be stopped, and they also find a fallen angel who is out stealing souls before the Centurions can take them to the Everlast. Of course, once the fallen angel sees Kit, he zeroes in on her and makes it his mission to possess her.
The storyline was very interesting and the author does an amazing job at drawing out the world and the scenes, it just felt as if I was watching things happen. This was also an emotional book for Kit and her search of what makes her happy and how to deal with what’s bringing her down.
I’m looking forward to the ending of this trilogy in the next book and finding out ….Who killed Griffin Shaw?

TROUBLE ON RESERVE claims to take place between A PERFECT BLOOD and EVER AFTER (which is why it’s labeled as 10.5) however please be warned that it really seems to take place either during or even AFTER EVER AFTER. Reference is made to things that happen in that book and unless you want to be spoiled (not much, but it’s there) then I would recommend reading this after you read the next upcoming book in January. I will keep my review spoiler free.
This story basically gives us a small glimpse into the interactions between Trent and Rachel. That’s all there is to this story. It’s their connection, them coming together, working together, and facing danger together. And maybe starting to show how they truly feel about one another, how much they care.
As this series is slowly coming to a close, we are seeing more and more a vulnerable side of Trent. And I just love that! He wants to be good but sometimes he’s forced to be bad. Like when he takes Rachel on a job without telling her what he was really doing there and all hell breaks loose, of course.
Rachel has grown a lot and matured, but it was also nice to see her so sure of herself and her ability to protect Trent. Not to mention the action. These two can always get into trouble.
I really don’t know how this would work as a standalone if you didn’t know anything about The Hollows world, but in general, this series is not one that I would ever recommend reading out of order. These books are jammed packed with information and so many things happen and change from one book to the next that I feel it would certainly but a dent in your full enjoyment....more

It is bittersweet to see this series come to an end. It seems as if it was yesterday that I attended NY Comic Con and listened to a panel where Kristen Painter talked about her experience with her first book and how she came up with her world. I hadn’t really heard of her but I fell in love with the cover and quite frankly I loved her personality. And that’s why I read it.
The House of Comarre is so unique and truly has it all. Action, intrigue and romance. We’ve been on this ride with Chrysabelle for a while and this is her final battle. In LAST BLOOD , Chrysabelle has to save Mal from his old self. He’s lost his feelings and his love for her and reverted to the predator he was before she came into his life.
While that happens, there’s a lot going on in the world around them. Tatiana is still causing havoc, but now she has her own issues to deal with. Creek has changes coming his way too and tough decisions to make. Doc and Fi also have to make a stand in their pack. LAST BLOOD ties things up with everyone. I especially loved to see Fi’s strength in this book.
But all that aside, it’s Chrysabelle front and center. I love the growth that her character has gone through. She’s stronger but has opened up. And now she’s ready to fight for that happiness she deserves. To protect the ones she loves. And Mal, well, just when I thought I would be upset with him, I’m still as enamored with him as ever. Their love is strong and has overcome many tests.
LAST BLOOD was not blood pounding but more of a steady simmer. Once you’re hooked, you’re captured for the duration of the story. Every part, every change of POV, every character, every story. Even though I’m sad to see this series end, I’m happy that the author has done such an amazing job with the story. She’s given everyone the perfect ending and we are not left to wonder about anything. Job well done, this is how I like to see a series end!
