So far I'It's the second book in the Pratchett's subseries about Death of the Discworld series. If only the actual Death was like sir Pratchett's one!
So far I've read many books by Pratchett and not a single one of them disappointed me - I loved them all. In this particular novel I enjoyed: Life and Death discussions, what it takes to be alive; The friendship between Death and Mrs Flitworth, the last scene of hers and her beloved one; Ludmilla and Lupine! Just awesome, I love how Prathett keeps teaching us all that true love doesn't know any boudaries that exist only in people's heads; Strong personalities of Mrs Flitworth and Mrs Cake. I love strong women charachters! Archchancellor Ridcully and his university colleagues.
The best thing to do is keep busy and act cheerful, I always say.
...they believe that no-one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away - until the clock he wound up winds down, until the wine she made has finished fermenting, until the crop they planted is harvested. The span of someone's life, they say, is only the core of their actual existence.

I could fully companionate Rudy’s story, since I also feel so lonely that I would join the Egregious Parade if one was to happen. Just as Rudy, the older I become, the more unremarkable and loveless I feel. I do hope, this will change and the epilogue* of my life will not happen soon.
* mind you, Vonnegut’s epilogue doesn’t mean that you’re going to die. It means that you stop living, you just exist either longing for the past, or erecting a stone tower around you that makes you indifferent towards anyone and anything. ...more

Having read and loved lots of his books, I was strolling in the bookshop, looking for something to catch my eye and was startled to find out that I’ve never heard about the ‘Bluebeard’ before and then I couldn’t wait to immerse into it. It’s a great story which covers lots of topics: anti-war thoughts, art, feminism, family and friends. I’d also love to spend summer at the Rabo’s cottage, for example, writing my bachelor’s thesis (which was a hard thing to complete, and I bet it’d have been much easier had I been at the ocean). I immensely enjoy Vonnegut’s conversational style of writing and that there’s no evident morality in his novels so that everyone should seek it for themselves or just enjoy the perfect writing.
So, some quotes in Russian:
‘Мы для того и существуем, чтобы помочь друг другу справиться со всем этим, как это ни назови.’
‘...зачем учить языку живописи того, у кого нет настоятельной потребности что-то сказать?’
‘Война - это всегда мужчины против женщин, мужчины только притворяются, что дерутся друг с другом.’
‘У неё была настоящая жизнь. Я собирал забавные байки. У неё был дом. Я же почувствовать себя дома и не мечтал.’

Even though she might appear quite harsh sometimes, she’s still incredibly wise, courageous, resolute, and single-minded. If I were a dweller of the Discworld, I would certainly be her apprentice. But since I’m not, I just remain her solemn admirer.
I highly recommend reading this marvellous novel because it teaches the reader to be brave and encourages to follow one’s ambitions.
“So I had to learn. All my life. The hard way. And the hard way’s pretty hard, but not so hard as the easy way. I learned.”
“You mean you weren’t Chosen?’ ‘Me? No. I chose,’ said Granny. The face she turned to Nanny Ogg was one she wouldn’t forget in a hurry, although she might try. ‘I chose, Gytha Ogg. And I want that you should know this right now. Whatever happens. I ain’t never regretted anything. Never regretted one single thing. Right?”...more

This book is the 1st in the sub-series ‘Death’ of the Discworld universe. It tells a story about a boy named Mort who quite accidentally became Death’s apprentice and just as accidentally fell in love with a princess, whose life he saved. Afterwards the narration unfolds in my favourite manner: what might happen if one tries to interfere with the history’s affairs. However, since we’re talking about a book by Sir Pratchett, results of such meddling are completely unpredictable till the very end!
This novel is staffed with everything I seek in a book: it has an intricate engaging plot, compelling characters with outstanding character development (take, for example, Ysabell; I thought she was all about melodrama but the book made me fell in love with her courageous smart personality) and a great deal of humour and wisdom.
« ‘Do you know what happens to lads who ask too many questions?’ Mort thought for a moment. ‘No,’ he said eventually, ‘what?’ There was silence. Then Albert straightened up and said, ‘Damned if I know. Probably they get answers, and serve ‘em right.’ »
So, yeah. Let’s be brave, sincere, open-minded, vulnerable and strong at the same time. Let’s not be afraid of difficulties and hardship, love and adventures, and even of sacrifices. ‘Mort’ teaches all these things and even more! It’s a definite must-read for all humans!

Having bought tickets to the same-called play, I decided to read the original source first. It wasn’t my first encounter with Kuprin, since I read some of his stories while studying at school. They made controversial impression on me: I loved ‘Garnet Bracelet’ and hated ‘Olesya’. So, I didn’t know what to expect from this novel with so polemical a topic. Now I regret only one thing: that I didn’t know about this book before, and my burning ambition now is to give ‘The Pit’ to all my (especially female) friends.
I couldn’t imagine a book making such a strong impression on me. It’s been years since I had a page turner in my arms and couldn’t put a book down daily and nightly. Well, this one is this sort of books. It absorbs you into its reality, and then it presents small, but so acute, sincere, and heart-breaking details, describing prostitute’s lives, their casual routine, other people’s bad vices, their devious characters.. It leaves you speechless and close to tears. I believe that only a Russian author was able to catch this horrible decaying environment (where women are just meat, which you can buy for 0-3₽ for a visit) with such accuracy!
I highly recommend reading this book to everybody. Especially, girls and women. My life now has divided into life before and after reading it....more

‘..you cannot protect yourself from sadness without protecting yourself from happiness’
This novel is beautiful in many different ways, since it covers a hella lot of important topics, namely, people being people (shy and brave, weak and strong, people who live, suffer, love, and die.. yep, that’s what I love), the theme of 9/11 (which is too horrible a catastrophe, I can’t even imagine), Dresden bombing, recovering from grief and loss, losing your most close people..
Maybe, the only disadvantage of the book is that Oscar is so bright that there were times when I found myself being envious of him, his intelligent games with his dad, Oscar’s endless curiosity, his inability not to feel too much. (Describing all these qualities, I’ve made a revelation that, maybe, actually I adore this character, since nearly for 5 years I’ve been looking for such a person in my life, having lost one at school... oops I’m on edge again..)
All in all, I highly recommend reading or listening to this novel (especially narrated by Jeff Woodman , Barbara Caruso , Richard Ferrone.. the voice of the latter is so magnificent I almost cried with tears of happiness and excitement whenever he spoke)...more
