Imagine a girl you've had a crush on since you were 10 all of a suddenly at your second story window in the middle of the night, wearing all black, telling you she chose you to go on some crazy adventure. Then the next day she disappears. She leaves some clues behind that only you can figure out. That's the plot of the book more or less. It's jammed full of likable characters. To start this off, this is a really hard book to summarize the plot without giving away half of the plot. My description will be very vague, I apologize but I don’t want to give away most of the plot.
Colin just moved to Santa Leona about two months before the story takes place. He becomes best friends with Roy. When Roy starts asking and about death and rape, he doesn’t know what to do. He doesn’t want to believe the stories but if they are true, what can he do about them?
That’s all good but is the book good? You came to the right place to find out. This is my review of a standalone novel, The Voice of the Night by Dean Koontz.
The plot of the story is actually really slow. It takes the book about 170 pages to actually pick up pace. While it was slow, I surprisingly actually enjoyed the slow part. The character of Colin must have hit a soft spot for me or something. Once the story picks up, it really picks up. You are on the edge of your seat all the way through until the very last page. The story abruptly ends so you don’t know what happens to the characters after the story is over but that’s alright for. It left it up to my imagination to guess what happened to the characters right after the story. The ending is a very satisfying ending though.
The characters of Colin and Roy are great. They are fourteen. They have really awesome chemistry together. The only other character the plays a big part of the story is the character of Heather, a fourteen year old girl. She is another great character. These three characters get really fleshed out from beginning to end. There are several minor characters but they don’t play much of a role to the story and they for the most part are two dimensional.
I really enjoyed this book a lot. I recommend this book to fans of thrillers that don’t mind slow stories cause it does pick up. I would also recommend it to first time Koontz readers and R.L. Stine fans since this one reads like a book you would find in his Fear Street series. ...more
Procession of the Dead is the first book in the City Trilogy by Darren Shan. The book stThis review is also on my blog. Procession of the Dead review
Procession of the Dead is the first book in the City Trilogy by Darren Shan. The book starts off as a gangster story but you realize it is much more than that. In that sense it is classic Darren Shan.
The story begins with the main character, Capac Raimi heading to “The City” by train. He comes to “The City” to become Uncle Theo’s right hand guy as a gangster. Soon after the head honcho of the gangster universe in “The City”, the Cardinal sends for Capac and has his uncle killed.
After accepting a job from the Cardinal is when all hell breaks loose for Capac. He encounters various different characters; an assassin with tattoos, blind priests, a beautiful woman, and people all of a suddenly disappearing. He realizes that things are not what they seem.
This is Darren Shan’s first published novel. It is definitely different from his young adult novels, such as the Cirque Du Freak series (Also known as The Saga of Darren Shan) and Demonata series. By different, I mean it is not associated with the horror genre. It does have elements of the supernatural in it. It is better described as an urban fantasy gangster novel.
I regard Darren Shan as my favorite author. This book helps prove it. I LOVED it. The setting was awesome, the characters are great, what is simply the best is the story. It never gets going too quickly where you want it to slow down but it never slows down its pacing, it has some of the best pacing I have seen in a book. I didn’t want to put down the book. I wanted to find out what would happen next. I was constantly surprised by each event in the book. When I was finished with the book, I was like “WOW did that just happen?”
Its faults are small but of course it does have its faults. The writing isn’t the best which is consistent with Darren Shan’s other early novels in the Cirque Du Freak series. The constant use of profanity was unnecessary but it does fit into the novel’s tone. It is also not a book for all ages, I recommend only adults read it.
Overall it is a great book. I highly recommend it any of the ADULT Darren Shan fans out there, also to the gangster novel fans, and urban fantasy fans out there. It was one book I did not want to put down. I wanted to see it to the end. The story was amazing. It had one of those, “I didn’t see that coming” endings.
Disclaimer: This is a review of a book that Darren Shan owns. I don’t do number ratings because this is purely my own opinion of the book. Your opinions may differ from mine which is totally fine. ...more

His name is Odd Thomas. He isn’t famous, so why would you care anything about? It’s probably because he can see dead people but the dead don’t talk. He doesn't know why. Is his book any good? Let’s find out. Odd Thomas is the first of an eight part book series by Dean Koontz. It’s about a fry cook named Odd Thomas. He sees dead people and by God, he does something about it. He tries to help them cross over to the other side by catching their murderer or just by finding out why they decided to stay here on Earth. The story revolves around Odd Thomas seeing an odd visitor in the diner followed by a dark shadowy spirit that only appears when death is in the near future; Odd calls these spirits bodachs. Odd makes it his business to find out why the bodachs are following the visitor and put a stop to whatever devious plans he might have. Over all I thought the story was great. It has a ton of twists and turns to keep you guessing until the end. It has really memorable characters, settings, villains, and ghosts such as Elvis. The story is quite believable as to how Koontz weaves ghosts into the life of an ordinary guy. It is also quite humorous at times. I highly recommend this first book of the Odd Thomas series to anyone whom enjoys Dean Koontz, thrillers, or someone that just wants a strange, different, humorous story....more

I know most people like Anne Rice more than Darren Shan but I personally LOVE Darren Shan so much more than Anne Rice.
So this novel starts off as Larten Crepsley as a child and a prequel the the excellent Cirque Du Freak series. As a child he never felt like he fit into his family. Everyone picked on him other than his cousin Vur Huston. After a dramatic event happens where Larten works, he runs away and finds himself diving head first into the dark world of vampires.
If you enjoyed the original Cirque Du Freak series you will love this book! It has locales from the original series such as Vampire Mountain, The Cirque Du Freak, and Larten's home town. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves vampires.
I am now off to read the second book in this series titled Ocean of Blood! =D...more

It is as great as I remembered. It wasn't a cash in like most people call it a cash in. I do enjoy Jurassic Park better because the story was better. Most everyone I know actually enjoys this book better than the first. I can see why. It is about a lost world filled with dinosaurs. Over half of this book is filled with theories while they are interesting they do not further the story as they did in the first book. Anyways the book is great and it is a lot different from the movie that was based on it. I highly recommend it....more

While rereading it for the first time in ten years, I realized how important this book was to me. It was the very reason why I became a reader in the first place. Anyways lets move on to the actual review.
This is a story about a kid whom goes to a freak show becomes entranced with a spider. So much so he steals it from a vampire. Why? Because he wanted. He just didn't know this whole thing is why he is in the problem is in now, the dark world of vampires.
I thought it was a pretty fast paced story for a story that introduces the main character. The writing isn't amazing but since I read the entire series, it Darren Shan's writing improves... you can also look at it this way, the character of Darren Shan is young, and he wouldn't be the greatest of writers so write this way. By his 12th adventure he would be a master at writing. Anyways, in this book you can notice the writing great. But the story is what kept me hook, even ten years later as a reread for me.
I would recommend this on to any vampire lover out. It is a much more realistic tale of vampires but it still geared to vampire lovers. I would even recommend it to nonvampire lovers. It is just that great of a story. It still receives five sharp nails or of five!...more
