This deserves the high rating not only for the freshly humorous heist story, but for the perfection of narration of the Audiobook!!! It is delightful and her timing is right on point, but the juels of the book are the moments when the main character, who has been the voice over actor for a couple of popular Disney - like animation films, belts the popular songs of said movies! This voice and this author are a marriage made in heaven ❤️❤️❤️...more

A collection of short stories on different holiday themes. Not really about the holidays, but observations of life around the holidays.
After a somewhat rough start, I found the first story the weakest in the bunch, the second had a bit more to offer, the next were what I have grown to expect from this author. David Sedaris has never been a riotous comedian. He is an acquired taste and his humor has to do with the observations of regular people and their everyday lives, with quite a bit of morbid fascination with tragedy and the absurd ways our brains choose to deal with it as safety mechanisms.
One of the things that I was surprised how much it bothered me, was the use of the word "retarded". I know that at the time this was written, it was in regular use of everyone's vernacular, but I guess I have come to enjoy it being mostly in our past, because it definitely startled me... In the 90's, I remember it being well used in all types of circumstances, particularly on the East Coast, and proudly, but I am glad it's use has tapered down significantly...
Best stories, in my opinion, were the grade school theater reviews, and the "prostitute" friend ...more

I loved this book and I really enjoyed the series as a whole! Honestly, I would love more from this author and specifically more of this world and those characters. It is funny, smart and well structured. The second and third books got better and better, lessening the slapstick comedy of the first, and getting better organized toward a story and message. Loved all the political observations, despite the author choosing to go satirical there. As I said - I want more ...more

I truly enjoyed this witty and entertaining Victorian era set story! The writing was delightful and I wish the author would consider writing more about those characters! Actually, I think I would be glad to know he is writing anything... I have no idea why this seems to be his only book, at least as registered on this site... Shame. I would have loved to read more of this!!!...more

At this point, this series has secured a very stable place in my heart, and I am way past all sense of objectivity and I can admit to pure subjective fan-girling. I have missed being with Cal and the gang, I have grown found of their calamitous Space adventures, and even more so, with their unlikely deep friendships, but add to that an orphaned, last of her species, 6years old shark-girl, who brings out all the protective instincts of our resident werewolf girl Miz, and this book brings on not only the typical for the series humor, but also all the feelings that tug on your heartstrings! I love this series and this book did not disappoint! ...more

"...“Isn’t it obvious?” he said, grinning. “That was the elephant of surprise. And you, my robotic friend, are totally fonked.” ― Barry J. Hutchison, Sting of the Mustard Mines...
And this is what we, the loyal readers are - totally fonking in love with this crew! Well, my personal favorite is Splurt, and in this case I don't think even Cal Carver has anything to complain about. Who doesn't love this adorable green blob who can always cheer you up just by being there and can get your ass out of any type of trouble, even the bad ones. Especially the bad ones!
After some as to be expected heroics on Earth, Cal and company lend themselves in a bit of trouble, crash-landing on a really unappealing planet, then once again get captured and enslaved to work in the Mustard Mines of Moktar... Hahaha! Mustard Mines! Where does he come up with such ridiculous and hilarious stuff??? Turns out, the miner frivolities they allowed themselves while "fixing" the current timeline, were not that minor in consequences...
"...“Get them on the space phone right now!” Cal urged. He sat up straighter and smoothed down the front of his Dorothy on the Streets, Blanche in the Sheets t-shirt.” ― Barry J. Hutchison, Sting of the Mustard Mines...
Cal's wardrobe suffers... He also suffers. Which leads me to the one thing that makes me nervous in the series - Barry sure is pushing it with Cal's healing mojo! I am worried for the guy. We know how fast it reached its limits last time, I wonder if we are going to have him totally normal soon, or if this is going to become a paradoxical "new normal" for him and he is almost unkillable from now on... I can't wait to see ...more

... …and Ellison manoeuvred his flesh hands in a claw-like motion, locking them with Cyro’s own grasping claws. His soft human body pressed against the hard lines of Cyro’s proprietary alloy, in a manner which would have generated wear and tear had Cyro’s body not been of superior make. Fluids leaked from Ellison’s eyes. No fluids leaked from Cyro’s ocular units, but…
