A very different culture and setting than I’m used to, but filled with lots of strong female characters and friendships. I was so impressed with Yunxian (Lady Tan) and her determination to help women in a time when their only purpose was to serve men. She was bold and progressive, while also holding strong traditional values of the time. Her friendship with Meiling and other key women who raised her was really the foundation of her practice.
TW: Definitely some shocking descriptions of Chinese torture and foot binding. Kinda cool but also a little out of pocket....more

Overall, I thought the book dragged and lost its focus. It dealt with some heavy topics of racism, sexual assault, and domestic violence in a very careful and respectful manner. However, it was weird that the story was focusing on the murder in an apathetic way. There were characters who were digging but they didn’t seem to care that much about what happened, and instead detailed other storylines that didn’t seem to contribute.
By the end, I felt like the main hero and villain that the story centered its ending around were not who I thought the story was trying to focus on. It had potential but overall didn’t measure up. Similar style to Where The Crawdads Sing or Hannah Coulter....more

In 1700s England, a young girl who tells fortunes works to learn the truth about her mother and discovers her history is something entirely different than she thought. With their estate at stake, the very wealthy De Lacy family will do anything to keep their money and their secrets safe. The closer Red gets to the truth, the more dangerous it becomes.
I struggled at the beginning and then was surprised to discover the book was a mystery/thriller when people started dropping dead early. Although I thought the characters were hard to track, I was impressed by the strategic layout of the book. It kept me constantly guessing, unsure of who to trust, and I thought the ending was perfectly satisfactory....more

A cute love story about an artist who develops face blindness and is torn between a vet she’s been fantasizing about and the jerk in her apartment building who keeps surprising her. Super lighthearted and an easy read. Predictable, but hey that’s a romcom for ya....more

A story about a lost girl, a mysterious book, and a sisters pursuit for truth. Set during WW2, two sisters are evacuated to the countryside of England and imagine a magical land where they can be anything they want. Its family elements deal with grief, betrayal, and loyalty.
I thought it was wholesome and would be great for younger readers, but I wished I felt more connected to the characters. The Linden sisters’ pain felt more personal towards the end, but I think the author could’ve expanded on this sooner in the book....more
