I can say, with every bit of certainty, that when an event guts me even though I know it's coming that's some amazing writing. And, well, going in this time, not only did I know it was coming, but I remember bawling my eyes out the first time around, anyway. This time? Still fucking gutted me. It's a powerful thing, leaving the ending more than a little bittersweet. I'm going on to Evan's book, now. He deserves some happy. I hope he finds it.
-----Original Review Aug 2020----- This series caught me off guard with just how much I ended up loving it. Graveyard Shift especially hit me right in the feels. And even knowing about that one thing, going in, because I read the spoilers, I was still gutted when it happened. Just gutted. Well done, even though I'm a bit teary, right now.

I assume this is a lead in to Pulp Friction 2015. Want it now. Gimme!

I assume this is a lead in to Pulp Friction 2015. Want it now. Gimme!
I really meant to write a more coherent review than "Ahh chiffhanger!! Gimme Moar Now!!", but it just isn't coming to me.
I will say that I love this series and I really enjoyed Free Falling Crimson. Sam and Travis are finally a couple and they really are delicious together. And we get to visit our two other favorite werewolves, too.
Nothing is resolved at the end of this book, though. Nothing. Never fear, though, Pulp Friction 2015 is taking place in this universe, so I have hopes that we will get there by the end of the year. I'm not terribly patient, though...it's a flaw, I know.
So, I look forward to more :)

A good start to this series! Blind Tiger is in the same universe as Hexworld but takes place a couple decades later, in the prohibition era o3.5 Stars
A good start to this series! Blind Tiger is in the same universe as Hexworld but takes place a couple decades later, in the prohibition era of the 1920's. I don't think you need to read the Hexslayer series, first, but I do think you'll get a better perspective on the whole witch/familiar thing and how it all works, if you do. Plus, Hexworld is an awesome series, so if you haven't read it, and you like magic and shifters, you definitely should check it out.
Alistair Gatti is definitely grumpy and kind of an asshole, but he'd also do anything for those he cares about. He reminded me of a combination of Nick and Jamie from Hexslayer. He's got the whole broody/grumpy assholish demeanor that Nick had (though not quite dialed up to 11), but he also purrs when he's with Sam and he wants to protect him. Alistair's also like Jamie in that war really changed him. He doesn't really feel worthy of love, anymore, and he sure doesn't feel like a hero just because he managed to come back alive. He's a bit jaded and closed off. He's entirely unprepared for Sam walking into his life.
Sam Cunningham is inexperienced and naive and insecure. He's got the biggest heart, too. His parents were abusive toward him, always telling him he wasn't worth anything and his older (deceased) brother was just so perfect, unlike Sam. Until Sam decided to leave without a word, going to Chicago to find a better life. It takes him a while to find his feet and his worth, but he gets there.
There were a couple things that kind of bugged me...I wasn't overly fond of the (view spoiler)[martyr act Alistair pulled, and I thought that Sam forgave him a touch too quickly. I was happy that Alistair was taking responsibility for his actions, though, and that Sam insisted in talking it out. (hide spoiler)]
I'm looking forward to the next book!

It's been forever since I originally read this (the original MLR Press release) and it was almost like reading it for the first time. I remembered bitIt's been forever since I originally read this (the original MLR Press release) and it was almost like reading it for the first time. I remembered bits of the story, but not much, really. I've been wanting to read some of the newer books in this series, so I figured I'd just start from the beginning.
I still enjoyed it, though it does feel dated. I'm looking forward to reaquainting myself with this series and universe....more

I was on the fence about reading The Wolf's (Un)Lucky Fae because I DNF'd the one other book I tried by this author because the characters were just beyond annoying. I should have just kept walking.
If we had not been told Remi's age in the first few pages (43 year old wolf shifter), I would have pegged him at about 19-20 from the way he talks and acts. I assume his best friends are around his same age, but they all act like they're college age.
Plus, the writing is very superficial and everyone is so perfect. I am bored. Time to move on.
